City of Hope: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 696 ratings

The heartrending and inspiring sequel to Ellis Island, Kate Kerrigan's City of Hope is an uplifting story of a woman truly ahead of her time

When her beloved husband suddenly dies, young Ellie Hogan decides to leave Ireland and return to New York, where she worked in the 1920s. She hopes that the city will distract her from her anguish. But the Great Depression has rendered the city unrecognizable. Gone are the magic and ambiance that once captured Ellie's imagination.

Plunging headfirst into a new life, Ellie pours her passion and energy into running a refuge for the homeless. Her calling provides the love, support, and friendship she needs in order to overcome her grief—until, one day, someone Ellie never thought she'd see again steps through her door. It seems that even the vast Atlantic Ocean isn't enough to keep the tragedies of the past from catching up with her.

Kate Kerrigan is an author living and working in Ireland. Her novels include the Recipes for a Perfect Marriage which was shortlisted for Romantic Novel of the Year and has been translated into 20 languages, and New York Times bestseller, the Ellis Island trilogy.

Kate began her career as an editor and journalist, editing many of Britain's most successful young women's magazines including more! and Just Seventeen magazine under her birth name Morag Prunty, before returning to her native Ireland in the 1990's. She writes a weekly column in the Irish Mail about her life in Killala, County Mayo - and contributes regularly to the RTE radio program Sunday Miscellany.

Her latest novel, The Dress, is published by Head of Zeus. It is available as an e-book from May 2015 and will be published in hardback in the U.K. in September 2015.

About The Dress: 'Kate Kerrigan's distinct and unique style of storytelling is in linking the ghosts of our pasts with modern dilemmas, interweaving yesterday with today in a mesmerising and moving way. Just beautiful.'

Cecelia Ahern

The Dress was a huge pleasure to read; it’s glamorous and gripping and moving. The characters are convincingly complex and the love triangle with Frank, Joy and Honor was thrillingly unpredictable – no central-casting goodies and baddies, this book is far too elegant and intelligent for that. The structure, where Kate goes back and forth between the present day and the past is very skilfully done. It’s a very confident book, the writer is really in charge of her material here, but the best thing she did was make me truly care about all of the characters. Kate Kerrigan writes with wit and intelligence and a masterful understanding of human beings.

I just loved it, I couldn’t bear to be away from it and now that I’m finished it, I miss it.

Marian Keyes

Recipes for a Perfect Marriage:

Recipes for a Perfect Marriage is that most prized of things, a unique treatment of an old subject. Not only an extremely entertaining read, this wonderful novel is also chock fill of wisdom about all aspects of love and marriage

Cassandra King

This is a wonderfully written and instantly engaging novel. But what's most impressive here is the wisdom about relationships. Recipes for a Perfect marriage should be required reading not only for those who are married or contemplating tying the knot, but for any person who longs to make any relationship work better.

Wonderful,enjoyed it so much.....

I read Ellis Island in 1 day and read City of Hope the next day. While I rooted for Ellie in the first book, I found myself quite frustrated with her in the second book and not very likeable. Both books are very well written and I was fascinated with the time period details that were provided. I very much enjoyed both books and can't wait for the third installment.

I read Ellis Island and enjoyed that one and was really looking forward to the 2nd book. I ordered it as soon as it was available. The Story was good; however I became very dissapointed in the deveolpment of Ellie's character. Even though she did a lot of good in taking care of the poor with the 2nd empire that she built in America it seems to me that she was very selfish in her life. She built releationships with people based on love and as soon as she ran into a problem; she turned her back and dropped them and ran from the relationship. She developed into a very selfish person. In the first book she left her husband to come to America and make money to get them and their family out of debt. But after establishing her self; she eventually falls in love and perpetuates a relationship w/a young man only to drop him and go back to Irland to be with her husband. Once there she falls in love w/her husband again; but demands to live her life as she wants; no comprimizing. She builds an empire in Ireland but when her husband dies; she turns her back on her family and drops them and her business empire and runs back to the US w/ no explanations. She creates her 2nd empire - Finds her first American love and starts a relationship w/him - that doesn't work - starts a 2nd relationship and when he falls in love w/her dumps him and all her friends once again. If there is a third book; I'll probley buy and read it......but I don't think much of Ellie's character anymore. As far as I'm concerned she is a selfish brat that doesn't think of anyone elses feelings but her own.

The characters were so real.

Let me say that I really liked the first book, Ellis island and I will read the third one in the trilogy.
However, this second one was not as compelling.
Nor was it as clearly written. I found myself unhappy with Ellie, the main character. I had times when I wanted to "shake" her. Overall, it is worth the read. Thinking it over, perhaps too much of book one is retold in City of Hope.

Though I was frustrated with Ellie and was angry with her at times, I loved this book. This is the second book in the trilogy and the second book by Kate Kerrigan that I have read and I think that she is a gifted writer. After John's death, Ellie was unable to face her grief and literally fled to America to hide from her pain. She is a woman who was, indeed, ahead of her time; a gifted business woman whose business ventures gave her enough money to support herself and the depression ravaged families that she met along the way. I FELT Ellie's pain and cried off and on throughout the book. I was frustrated with her inability to cope with her grief and to accept John's death. I was angry with her for substituting frenetic activity for contemplation but, still, I loved her. I don't want to spoil the book for other readers but I was furious at the ending until I saw that there is a third book in the series which I am looking forward to.

I highly recommend this book but want to warn other readers that it is an emotional roller coaster ride with a cast of characters who seem real enough to walk off of the page and into your lives.

Wow, ok I did like this book ( two books together a good long read)....but the ending.... I think I'm really mad at her. She accomplished so much but was still not satisfied. I would recommend the two books together to get a full understanding of her life and what made her make her decisions but now I would like to know how did she or did she ever settle
Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2016
The main character in this series, Ellie, is not a very nice or likable person. She's very selfish and expects her husband to knuckle under to her because she's "more sophisticated and knowledgeable". She can't even be bothered to put her self-involvement aside to respect her husband, his passing, or his family. "Well, this is unpleasant, I'll just head back to America".... "Well, this is unpleasant, I'll just head back to Ireland"... "Oh, Ireland didn't work out like I thought, Maidy wasn't on her hands and knees begging me to stay - well, I'll just head back to America, but not to the man who loves me". By the way, the writing is very good and the author tells a good story, it's just Ellie is really unpleasant.

This is an excellent sequal to Ellis Island. Quite unexpected "turn of events" but so well written that it compels the reader to keep turning the pages until you reach the end - and want it to continue. Fortunately, there is to be a third book published soon. I love the way Kate Kerrigan is able to draw the reader into understanding Ellie Hogan's character - but don't want to say more that will give away the details of the novel! Read and enjoy!
