About the Author

Karen Ranney wanted to be a writer from the time she was five years old and filled her Big Chief tablet with stories. People in stories did amazing things and she was too shy to do anything amazing. Years spent in Japan, Paris, and Italy, however, not only fueled her imagination but proved she wasn't that shy after all.

Now a New York Times and USA Today bestseller, she prefers to keep her adventures between the covers of her books. Karen lives in San Antonio, Texas.

Ms. Ranney has been a favorite of mine for years. I always find her stories to be unique and at the very least very interesting. Macrath and Virginia's love story was probably common enough in the day, having to marry above to improve the family's reputation and standing. Throughout the book Virginia seems lost. She knows she loves Macrath and is miserable without him, and seems to do nothing but the wrong things, by listening to other people instead of her instincts. Macrath thankfully, is a patient man and is so in love with Virginia he won't give up. Throw in a bad guy, a stubborn Mother-in-law, smallpox epidemic, a few Scottish characters and you have a story. When Virginia's husband dies you instantly think there is hope for Virginia and Macrath to finally be together, but what she does next is so mind blowing, you almost feel sorry for her. The book kept me interested and I truly enjoyed the story. I would recommend Ms. Ranney's books to any and all historical romance fans.

What would you do? That is the question that comes to mind when I talk about The Devil of Clan Sinclair by Karen Ranney? What would I do?

In a world where a woman is basically owned first by her father then by her husband.. what would you do if you fell in love with one man but your father forced you to marry another? When the husband dies and leaves you penniless, what would you do to ensure that the family is provided for? What would you do when an evil man decides you belong to him? What would you do for love? Love of a man? Love of a family? Love of a child? not for duty but for love?

In this sweeping story of love denied, destroyed and slowly rebuilt Karen Ranney does a masterful job of creating characters that you can believe in. A young girl in the first throes of love.. A man who loves a woman so deeply he is willing to give her the world.. A father determined to sell marry his child of as high as he can.. A mother in law desperate to care for her remaining children.. and finally a woman determined to find her own path...

Virginia Traylor had it all, money, beauty and a man who loved her.. too bad her father wanted something different for her. Destroying her dreams he sent the love of her life away and forced her to marry the ailing Lawrence Traylor.. too bad he dies just a few short months into the marriage. Leaving all of his (her) money to a male heir from his body.. Yeah but... Virginia and her mother in law concoct a scheme to create the illusion of just that, in order to avoid living in abject poverty.

Macrath Sinclair loves Virginia.. that about says it all! A selfmade man who has brought his family up from genteel poverty to owning his own "castle" and somehow becoming the Devil of Clan Sinclair.. a man who believes that you make your choices and stand by them. When Virginia left him the first time he was devastated . when she returned to see him just once more he dreamed.. when he found out he had been used.. he demanded!!

Passion erupts between these two and the battle lines are clearly drawn!! When Macrath discovers Virginia bore his child and is passing off as her late husbands in order to ... who knows why.. he wants his child and uses the fact that Virginia is sick to basically kidnap his child. His child belongs with him not pretending to be someone else.

This was not a book that took place in week.. where they fall in love and live happily ever after. These two strong willed individuals learn to love, forgive and love again over time. While Macrath has grown into his own over a lifetime, Virginia has to find her way. She knows only one thing.. NO ONE is going to take her child. She is his mother and he will not be fobbed off to nurses and nannies nor will she allow his father to steal him away.

A battle of wills that keeps the reader interested and intrigued flows over the pages.. I really enjoyed this book. Maybe because it wasn't all happy happy happy.. there was darkness of spirit in there. There was despair.. there was life.

I completely recommend this book!! Be sure and check it out!

This story was a little different from others in that the love was always there. It was the lies and deception that kept them apart. I love how they reach their decisions after their struggles.

I love the stories by Karen Ranney. She writes beautifully and I yearn to visit the worlds she describes. That being said, this was not one of my favorite stories. I didn't care for the main female character, though she did grow in strength as the story unfolded.
Virginia was the daughter of a wealthy American who brought her to England to marry a titled gent. She met McGrath, a wealthy Scot who was also an inventor. He wanted to marry her, but her father married her to Lawrence, a sickly earl. It's not really clear why but Lawrence resented her, spent all her dowry and left it so the family would be destitute if he died. Her mother in law formed a plan for her to find someone to impregnate her and pass the child off as the heir. She schemes to accomplish this by visiting Macrath. I was very unsatisfied by the turn of events and the story. I get frustrated by the character being a victim due their own actions. It wasn't a bad book. The story kept me interested and I could picture the countryside. There was suspense from a character who was stalking Virginia so there is a lot to the story. So wonderfully written, though I've liked her other books better.
