LifeWork: A Biblical Theology for What You Do Every Day Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 48 ratings

We spend 50 to 75 percent of our waking hours and 60 to 90 percent of the years of our lives working. Yet many of us never invest even a fraction of that time exploring the vision that drives our lives and work.

Whether or not we think of ourselves as theologians, none of us can avoid having a theology that shapes our lives. The question is, are we aware of what our personal, functioning theology really is?

Few know better how practical theology is than Darrow Miller. In more than twenty-five years of work in relief and development, Miller has lived at the intersection of worldview and everyday activity. Now, in this exploration of vocation that has the potential to radically reorder our lives, Miller lays out the thought background necessary for each of us to establish a meaningful, integrated understanding of our life and work. Whatever our work or vocation, God calls each of us to a new way of living fully in his presence.

• Uncover the powerful connections between God s work and your work
• Find the foundations of your calling in the great biblical Story
• Understand the historical and contemporary worldviews that influence you and your culture
• Learn how to bring truth, justice, and beauty into every sphere of society
• Grasp the compelling vision for which Christ lived and died, the kingdom of God

Editorial Reviews

Review

Having worked among the poorest of the poor, Darrow Miller has credibility when he writes about the sources of poverty. With his characteristic thoroughness and gentleness, he builds a case for the worldview basis of work and wealth creation. --Nancy Pearcey, author of Total Truth and coauthor of How Now Shall We Live?

Against the narrow, individualistic conception of the gospel that unfortunately gets preached in many evangelical churches, Miller offers the biblically accurate and exhilarating description of the gospel of the kingdom. Miller paints a picture of how to connect all of our life and work now to our glorious future on the New Earth.
LifeWork enlarges vision and passion for taking up our high calling of culture making, joining King Jesus on his mission of healing our broken planet. --Amy L. Sherman, Director, Center on Faith in Communities

I'd like every student to read Darrow Miller's chapters on worldviews at work and the need to battle dualism and the sacred-secular dichotomy. He brilliantly shows how to live and work before God and why it's so important to grasp the biblical theology of vocation. His summary of the Bible's essential metanarrative is pitch-perfect, and his application of that to cultural pursuits is exactly what those who waver need to hear. --Marvin Olasky, Provost, The King's College, New York City; Editor-in-Chief,

(This review is for LifeWork: A Biblical Theology for What You Do Every day)

If you were Satan and knew that the Holy Spirit has changed the heart of Christians so that they were no longer under your tyrannical control; that they are now not only able to correctly understand God's revealed counsel, but want to understand it; that God works in them to will and do for His good pleasure;" (Phil 2.12-14) that you have to "flee" from their presence if told to do so; and you knew that you couldn't "un-change" their new spiritual heart ... what strategy would you employ against them? If your answer is, "I would deceive them into thinking they were serving God, but in reality they would be living as though they were still in their non-Christian state," you get a gold star.
Darrow Miller "outs" this tactic of Satan by systematically explaining that we don't live in a non-Christian cultural "jungle," but in "Christ's Kingdom," where we have been empowered to redeem the earth by faithfully and consistently conforming our lifestyle to biblical ethics. In biblical jargon, we have been called to "possess the gates" of our cities. Miller explains that "Gates," in the Bible are symbols of authority, and even though our current "gates" (media, public schools, civil government) are controlled by non-Christians and their God-hating cultural agenda, this is not the way its supposed to be, and indeed, is not the way it is going to be.
Miller presents four steps by which we can begin occupying the "gates" of our communities:
Step One -- By attacking the stronghold of our mind, as we think like Christians in all phases of our life. (2 Cor. 10.4-6)
Step Two -- Make Christ preeminent in all things by bringing kingdom principles to bear in all domains of society: in law (to bring justice), in business (to bring honesty and integrity), in science (to bring objectivity), in communication (to bring truth), and in art(to bring beauty). (Col. 1.18)
Step Three -- Provide a daily demonstration of virtue by practicing what is true, good, and beautiful. (Micah 6.8)
Step Four -- Recognizing that the church is people, not a building. (1 Pet. 2.9-10)
At a time when most American Christians know a lot about God, but know very little about how to live for Him, we all owe Darrow Miller a vote of thanks for helping us to "connect our Spiritual Dots."

Once upon a time, the Church lost its way. Darrow Miller masterfully explains how this occurred, and lays out a clear vision for reversing this tragedy and recovering Biblical orthodoxy. If you are not yet sensitized to this calamitous drifting away, read this book and be forever changed. Armed with the truths presented in this book, you will be able to impact those within your sphere of influence in ways that matter not just for eternity, but also in the here-and-now. Be forewarned: You will purchase multiple copies of this book to hand out to the significant people in your life. This tome receives my highest recommendation!

Lifework is very encouraging and practical, especially for those of us who are not in “full time” ministry. LifeWork helps explain one reason why the church is so weak today. Theology that separates life into the spiritual (ministry or church related or "full time") and the secular (everything else) makes most of life somewhat unimportant for most people. LifeWork encourages each of us to recognize our individual calling and to live all of of life "before the face of God".

This review of Christian behavior towards life and work has challenged my paradigm toward the believe system I currently embrace. I am so thankful to the author and some many others that he referenced for the undoing of my American worldview, which is not a true worldview at all. If you like the status quo then do not buy this book. If you know that your walk with Christ is an ongoing journey toward His kingdom and leave your kingdom behind, then buy 2 and give one to someone you care for.

This book provides a great perspective on work/vocation as calling. It is ideal for individuals of faith seeking to reconcile what they do "the other six days of the week." I highly recommend the book and, in fact, have made it required reading for team members of my small Business As Mission organization.

I have found this to be a clear, substantive exposition of what Christian mission looks like in the marketplace. It seeks to correct the narrow view of mission that privileges those called to the 'full time ministry' as 'pastors' and 'missionaries'. Not denying the important place of the latter, he calls for a more holistic view of mission that encompasses the diverse vocations of every member of the church, even in the 'secular arena'. This helps every Christian to seek a transformative/redemptive perspective of his own vocation as contributing to God's comprehensive 'saving' of the cosmos, rather than seeing our jobs as simply a stepping stone for the 'real' mission work of saving souls. In this way, every Christian is sent out in the world wherever they are employed as God's agents of redemption. In this regard, Miller packs in a powerful message, supplemented with excerpts of real-life testimonies of people who exemplify this vision. Highly recommended!

This book reminds us that God should be in every activity of our lives, not just our "spiritual" life but everything practical. What we do in everyday life is by and for him. A must read for anyone wishing to live a God centered life.

This is a book that I wish I had read when it first came out some years ago. It is a hugely encouraging book for anyone who enjoys what they do as a job (paid or unpaid) but feels unappreciated and misunderstood in their sense of calling. For too long christians in secular employment have been made to feel like second rate christians and our workplace the unfortunate place where we have to go to earn the money that supports the "professional" christians. It is a liberating book as it calls us to celebrate our work and see it as God's calling for us. Darrow Miller gives us wonderful examples of real ordinary people doing relatively ordinary jobs who have made a huge difference to many lives. He show us how we can live meaningful lives and minister to others through our work, he challenges us to discover our passion and start to build the kingdom of heaven on earth. To those who fear that this book is just another social gospel book, rest assured it is thoroughly biblical and down to earth and does not lose sight of the eternal kingdom but rather spurs us on to act practically in loving our world and making it a better place for all mankind, the people in it, made in God's image. He shows us how our creativity can benefit others be it art, music, dance. We were all made in the image of God, the ultimate creator and our passions and interests will always reflect the divine image. We are called to be stewards of this earth and use all of God's gifts both around us and in us to carry on creating, caring, discipling and ultimately drawing men to Him. It opens up a whole new world and meaning of the word "evangelism"
