The Grub-and-Stakers Move a Mountain Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 196 ratings

A small town gardening—and archery—club must solve a murder case and save their town from developers in the first cozy mystery featuring Dittany Henbit.
Anyone growing up in Lobelia Falls is taught to learn the elegant, ancient, and occasionally deadly art of shooting with a bow and arrow. Practicing the craft, freelance secretary Dittany Henbit is strolling through the woods with her bow at her side when she meets a surveyor making surveys where he shouldn’t. Dittany is giving him what-for when an arrow goes whizzing above her head. It is sharp enough to kill, and was not fired by accident, but Dittany wasn’t the target. She and the surveyor find Mr. Architrave, the head of the water department, not far away—lying dead beneath the trees that he loved so much. Progress is coming to Lobelia Falls, and one resident will do anything to stop it. But in a town where every child can shoot, how can Dittany discover who drew the killer bow?

Review

“One of the most gifted mystery authors writing today.” —Sojourner: The Women’s Forum “The screwball mystery is Charlotte MacLeod’s cup of tea.” —Chicago Tribune   “Charlotte MacLeod does what she does better than anybody else does it; and what she does is in the top rank of modern mystery fiction.” —Elizabeth Peters, creator of the Amelia Peabody series

About the Author

Charlotte MacLeod (1922–2005) was an internationally bestselling author of cozy mysteries. Born in Canada, she moved to Boston as a child, and lived in New England most of her life. After graduating from college, she made a career in advertising, writing copy for the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company before moving on to Boston firm N. H. Miller & Co., where she rose to the rank of vice president. In her spare time, MacLeod wrote short stories, and in 1964 published her first novel, a children’s book called Mystery of the White Knight.  In Rest You Merry (1978), MacLeod introduced Professor Peter Shandy, a horticulturist and amateur sleuth whose adventures she would chronicle for two decades. The Family Vault (1979) marked the first appearance of her other best-known characters: the husband and wife sleuthing team Sarah Kelling and Max Bittersohn, whom she followed until her last novel, The Balloon Man, in 1998.

This book is absolutely a cozy. In hard-boileds the protagonist has no real sustained relationships. In cozies the protagonist is imbedded in relationships. The purpose of reading this story is really the zany situations and witty dialogue and the activities of our heroine, who is a natural-born stayer who participates fully in the life of her small (imaginary) Canadian community. I love this book. For me it is a comfort book I have read many times and expect to read many more. But if you want a serious mystery with serious clues, forget it. This is more like the Gilbert and Sullivan of cozy mysteries where the murder serves as the motivating situation that leads to the fun. Nonetheless, if you pay attention you will note that Charlotte Macleod is a very skilled writer, particularly with dialogue.

I love Charlotte Macleod. She is witty, clever and makes you care about her quirky characters. The mysteries are always a delight. She was way ahead of her time with strong women and conservation themes. All three of her series are worth a read. The Grub and Stakers series will take you on a wild ride with fun twists and turns. Who wouldn't want to visit Lobelia Falls and hang out for a while?

As a fan of author MacLeod’s Shandy and Kelling-Bittersohn mysteries, I gave the first book in this series a whirl. Typical of this author’s work, the book featured quirky characters, comical situations, and witty descriptions and dialog. As a mystery, though, it was a disappointment. Loads of information pertinent to the solution to the crime was withheld from the reader until the very end after the villain’s identity had already been revealed, making an unsatisfactory resolution for readers who like to play the whodunit game.

Dittany lives in a quiet little town where everyone learns to shoot a bow and arrow at a young age. She comes across a plot by a politician backed by the rich elites in town to take over the town's mountain in order to build houses. She rallies the whole town to work together to run a new candidate and raise money to keep their land for bow hunters' and their families. in the ensuing chaos, a man is killed. I like the characters and it's humorous, but the plot is strange.

I love all the stories by Alisa Craig/Charlotte MacLeod and this was the last one I needed to complete this series and as it was the first one in the series it made a big difference when I re-read them all.
