3.3 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

Her Murder was Brutal and Savage, and the Nicaraguan People want Someone to Pay! In 2005, Eric Volz moved to Nicaragua to pursue his dreams. By 2006, he was living the worst nightmare of his life. Twenty-five year old Eric Volz moved to Nicaragua in 2005 in pursuit of paradise. Drawn by its pristine beaches, scenic mountains, lush rainforests, and economic potential, he quickly fell in love with the country. And when his start-up publication, EP Magazine, found success on an international level, Eric's life was taking off like a dream. Then, on November 21, 2006, Eric's ex-girlfriend, beautiful Nicaraguan Doris Ivania Jimenez, was found brutally murdered inside her clothing boutique in the Pacific coastal town of San Juan del Sur. The day he helped lay Doris to rest, Eric was arrested for her murder. His paradise quickly became his prison. Haunting and powerful, this is The Eric Volz Story.

Review

Best Nashville True Crime Author, 2008 - ""What distinguishes Glasgow from more lurid peers is his ambitious narrative style and his attention to social milieu... In the South, the author notes, 'the human faults and human strengths of the characters always seem more intense and more exposed.' Which makes, of course, for gripping reading."" -- Joel Rice ""THE NASHVILLE SCENE""

Review

Michael Glasgow's The Bridge: Murder, Intrigue, and a Struggle for Justice in Nicaragua is a fascinating true-crime book. It tells the story of a young, idealistic American's adventures in Nicaragua...The author does an outstanding job combining the long-ago historical perspective with recent events. The pacing of the book is excellent, and the plot demonstrates well the often-exasperating and ever-changing speed of conflict resolution in Central America. The tale itself is a very interesting murder mystery, and it is made even more so by the way in which Glasgow tells the story.

I don't think that the author did any original research or interviews. All I read was regurgitated historical facts, irrelevent connections with unrelated historical facts, previous author's interviews quoted, and only about 30 of the 300 pages actually about "the Eric Volz story".

One can get 95% of the story by reading Tony D'Souza's article in Outside Magazine, "The Boomtown, the Gringo, the Girl, and Her Murder." This book was grasping for straws to find historical connections within the U.S./Nicaraguan relationship to try and explain Eric Volz's incarceration. The book then spent over 100 pages recycling this same theme over and over until one finally gets to any real details regarding the case. I would just wait for Eric Volz's memoir, which is in progress...or find other information sources regarding this case.

Michael Glasgow's The Bridge: Murder, Intrigue, and a Struggle for Justice in Nicaragua is a fascinating true-crime book. It tells the story of a young, idealistic American's adventures in Nicaragua. Eric Volz initially made a name for himself among the locals as an entrepreneur but ultimately was arrested for the murder of his Nicaraguan ex-girlfriend. Although a great deal of evidence suggested Eric was far away from the scene at the time of the murder, the quest for justice was difficult, at best. The author does an outstanding job combining the long-ago historical perspective with recent events. The pacing of the book is excellent, and the plot demonstrates well the often-exasperating and ever-changing speed of conflict resolution in Central America. The tale itself is a very interesting murder mystery, and it is made even more so by the way in which Glasgow tells the story.

This book is so much more interesting than a story about a brutal murder, however sad and appalling it was. The author broadened my knowledge, not just of Nicaragua but also with stories and quotes from Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill, John McCain and even some contemporary musicians. For people who live in Nashville, TN and indeed for all Americans, there are historical ties which may be new to you as they were to me. You never really know "who done it", but you do learn a lot about another legal system. I recommend it.

Michael Glasgow did a fantastic job of weaving history and intriguing facts into this real-life story of murder and an international struggle for justice. This book is hard to put down, and I felt I really got to know all of the individuals involved. The Eric Volz story definately makes one appreciate being an American and the benefits of our justice system. I highly recommend it!

The author did a great job describing the details of this bizarre story. It was interesting how he was able to compare two men from Nashville generations apart. Such enables the reader to shed light on why Mr. Volz was accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend. Although the author took great detail in delicately describing the history, it only strengthened the case for innocence. I highly recommend this book.

A fascinating story. The gore and guts that you so often encounter in today's true crime is absent here. The author presents the story of murder and intrigue in a masterful way. This is one of those hard to put down, good reads. I highly recommend it.
