An electrifying novel of blood, vengeance, and international intrigue from the New York Times–bestselling author of The Eagle Has Landed.

As a high-powered Wall Street lawyer, Sarah Talbot believed her world was comfortable and secure—until her beloved stepson was found dead of a drug overdose in Paris. Her initial grief is compounded when she learns that his body was used to transport heroin by an unstoppable European cartel.

Trained by British SAS, Irish-born Sean Egan has no problem killing whenever and wherever someone has to die. Dealing with death is second nature to him. So when his sister’s drug-poisoned corpse is found floating in the Thames, he knows it’s not an accident—it’s murder.

Bonded by their shared loss, Egan and Talbot come together, vow to find those responsible, and make them pay. Pursuing an enemy known only as “Mr. Smith” and hunted by a master assassin, they cannot imagine the truth they will uncover—and the dangers they will face. All they know is that they cannot stop until they have their revenge—no matter the cost.

For over fifty years, Jack Higgins, author of
The Midnight Bell, Rain on the Dead, and other bestsellers, has thrilled millions around the world with his lighting-paced novels of international action, suspense, and spy craft. Filled with engaging heroes, implacable villains, and action that draws readers in like a classic honey trap, Higgins’s novels remain the high-water mark of thriller excellence.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Sean Egan is Irish, well-educated and cynical, trained by the British as a commando who can shoot bad guys between the eyes without blinking. Sarah Talbot is a powerful Wall Street lawyer and a wealthy socialite. This unlikely duo join forces to avenge the killings of Sean's adoptive sister and Sarah's son, both murdered by a ghoulish heroin smuggling ring. They travel throughout Europe, uncovering clues just before each source is murdered before their eyes, followed by the drug ring's cool assassin, Jago. Though it's not unusual to find a political adventure novel lacking in original dialogue or emotional depth, it is surprising to see the plot fall quickly into such predictable contrivances. If Sean straps on an ankle holster at a certain point in the narrative, for example, he will certainly be frisked just a few pages later. The novel has no romance, no sex, and too few twists. The most interesting character, Jago, never lives up to his early promise as the cold-blooded killer with a chilling respect and fondness for Sarah. Higgins builds suspense only to let it dissipate at the last moment, and the ending, though a surprise, is arbitrary and unrewarding. The novel should, nevertheless, eventually find a comfortable niche in the paperback racks.

Jack Higgins can always be relied upon for an exciting page-turning easy-reading adventure story. This book certainly meets those expectations.

Sarah Talbot is a top Wall Street operator with connections to the US President. When she is at the top of her career she is devastated that her son has been murdered in Paris. Sean Egan is a former SAS and UK intelligence operative. He is similarly devastated when his sister is murdered, also in Paris. What brings them together in grief and revenge is the fact that both bodies were used to to smuggle heroin into the UK.

Sean and Sarah will stop at nothing to avenge the deaths that have one other common factor - the victims were drugged before death with a chemical that takes away their ability to understand what is happening. This chemical has only been seen elsewhere in assassinations in Northern Ireland. Their search for the drug mastermind takes them through London, Paris, Sicily, and Ireland as they uncover organised crime gangs that may be responsible. All the time they are tracked and sometimes assisted by a brutal operator working for the mastermind, known only as "Mr Smith". The most surprising thing is that they are assisted by a top Mafia boss who has never been involved with drugs and has a vendetta with another Mafia family who are at the top of the drug trade.

This was not as good as Higgins classic "The Eagle has Landed" and the "Night of the Fox" but was still a pretty good read, albeit a bit dated.

I have read very many Jack Higgin's thrillers.
They are the sort of books to read in a few days, maybe on holiday.

I think he has written just one good book and then changed characters, title and plot
    to generate a whole series!
In a few cases Higgin repeats events from a previous book.
The main character always seems to be lighting a cigarette and/or drinking Bushmills.

Having said that he has "a way with the words" to quote one of his expressions.
The books are difficult to put down other that for coffee or sleep!

These remarks apply to nearly all of his books. They are exciting to read but after a couple of weeks
they are difficult to recall. They lack real depth.

A typical Jack HIggins story. Fast paced, Full of twists and turns, Lot's of intrigues. A great read for an evening or a weekend. It is a little dated, as it deals with the conflict between the Protestants and the Catholic factions in Ireland during the conflicts at the end of the last century, the drug trade and smuggling all in one novel. The female heroine adds another special twist to this Jack Higgins tale.

The book kept me interested from the beginning to end. One thing I wish authors would realize, though. In order to be "realistic," too many are repeating in print the language a lot of people use for exclamations. Whatever happened to "damn" and "hell?" Not that those are wonderful words, but they are less offensive that continually being battered by "f" words, which is something a lot of readers are not accustomed to hearing in real life. I suspect that if authors and movie makers used less of that language, that perhaps it would begin to be less used by people who now think it's okay to speak in that manner. When I am hit with those offensive words, it takes me right out of the story while I recover. Sometimes I just throw some books in the trash, no matter how interesting they are.
