Fifty Places to Hike Before You Die: Outdoor Experts Share the World's Greatest Destinations Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 178 ratings

A breathtaking guide to fifty of the world’s greatest locations to hike, as selected by the experts who have been there.

Fifty Places to Hike Before You Die is the latest offering in the bestselling Fifty Places series. Chris Santella, along with top expedition leaders, explores the world’s greatest walking adventures. Some, such as the Lunana Snowman Trek in Bhutan and the Kangshung Valley Trek in Tibet, are grueling multiweek adventures at high altitudes. Others, such as Japan’s Nakesando Trail, move leisurely from village to village, allowing walkers to immerse themselves in the local culture. Whether it’s climbing the Rwandan mountains to view mountain gorillas or strolling through bistros along Italy’s Amalfi Coast, there’s a memorable hike at everyone’s level within these 50 chapters. With commentaries from expert trekkers and insider tips that lead the reader off the beaten path, Santella has again captured the special characteristics that make these must-visit destinations.

Racist entry- “Chinese people have slanted eyes”
I read this book while browsing the coffee table literature selection at an Airbnb. The first thing I noticed was a lack of photos to entice readers to the featured locations. Then I got to the entry by Jim Williams on The Three Gorges: “When I was in school, we didn’t learn much of anything about China, beside the fact that Chinese people had slanted eyes...” Wow. How did this sentence get past all the editors and publishers? You would think this had been published in 1882.

Who wouldn’t want to hike these places before they die??? Can’t wait to go hiking and check out many of these spots. I love that not all these spots are the typical places everyone has heard of.

I already knew where I plan to go before I got the book. However, the book changed the plans. We have been to Kalalau Trail in Kauai and enjoyed it with the kids. There are endless places to go-incredible.

Gave this as a gift to a co-worker who is an avid hiker and he liked it. I did not get a chance to read it myself, but after flipping through the pages, and I could tell it would be a good read and very interesting. Hopefully my co-worker is able to tackle some of these must-try hiking trails!

Nice smaller book, only disappointing thing is, I was hoping for more photos than text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the right time to break-in some new walking boots!

Haven't quite finished the whole book yet, because it's such a well-informed good read, that I'm taking my time, enjoying every minute of it. The book is reader-friendly, and goes into just the right amount of detail, without making descriptions boring.

Accompanying photographs are of the highest quality, and they make the reader really want to be there.

I hope to attempt most of the walks, if not all, thanks to the detailed descriptions and quality photos.

I'll take the book title as an instruction, not just a title!
