Trench Warfare, 1850–1950 Kindle Edition

3.2 3.2 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

Although many books have been published about the Western Front, few of them look beyond the Great War to consider trench warfare in a wider historical context. Trench warfare was not an aberration of the Western Front. On the contrary, it was a watershed in a greater upheaval in warfare which started in the 1850s and continued well beyond the First World War. This book examines how trench warfare was fought, studying the Crimea, American Civil War and Japanese War 1904-05. He looks at how the Western Front of 1914–18 differed from the trench fighting of the Second World War and the Korean War.The book examines the evolution of trench warfare, technologically and tactically, from the Crimean War to the Korean War, during which time developments in military technology often advanced far beyond tactical thinking. Trench Warfare 1850 1950 discusses the impact of trench warfare on military thinking and considers how the stalemate of the Western Front was overcome. Emergency technologies, from the hand grenade to the tank, are discussed to highlight their impact on trench warfare and, ultimately, on warfare as a whole. Tactically, trench warfare led to the development of the concept of deep battle which was later employed by the Red Army in the Second World War.

The centenary of World War I brings back the horrors of years of trench warfare on the Western Front and in Gallipoli. This book provides a broader view of how trench warfare originated and developed (nearly 100 pages), plus surveying trench use in the Great War and in battles since. Though lacking sufficient maps, we learn about the use of trenches in (among other places) Sebastopol during the Crimean War, numerous battles of the American Civil War, and the siege of Port Arthur in 1904-05. Saunders discusses how trenches were built at various times, the weapons used in (and against) them, what life was like for suffering soldiers, and how the process has changed in more recent decades. He has clearly done a lot of archival digging for this history--and it shows. This is not a sunny subject, but knowing more about a century of trench making and fighting surely adds important background to many battles.

Near total reliance on British sources renders this effort nugatory.

The book covers the various aspects of trench warfare including a comparison of the differences between the Crimean War, US Civil War, Russo-Japanese War, and World War I. The author describes the changes caused by artillery and the introduction of barbed wire and a new emphasis and changes in the use of grenades. Also, he describes the importance of the trench mortar and field expedients for mortars and grenades until a form of standardization during the war. One of his points is that trench warfare was not really static warfare, but resulted in many developments that each side had to counter. Basically this is a most useful and valuable book. Although the illustrations are few, this is a book that should be read as a hard copy and like most good reference material does not belong on an ebook.

Interesting topic which is badly written. The author has a sporadic, confusing style of writing. He seems to flit from thing to the next, and repeat certain points while not properly explaining another. Also has a frustrating habit of setting up and introducing a concept or idea, only to then move on inexplicably without reaching the point of explanation.

Although hard to follow sometimes, this is quite a thorough look at the importance of trenches in warfare. Interesting read.
