A Good Day to Die: A Novel (Dennis Milne) Kindle Edition
When Dennis Milne--now living under an assumed identity in the Philippines--hears that his old friend and colleague Malik has been gunned down in a restaurant, he decides to go back to the violent city he once called home and bring the murderer to justice. Milne arrives in a pre-Christmas London that is cold and hostile. But he is no longer a policeman; no longer charged with keeping the peace and upholding the law. Although his old friends at the King's Cross station do not know that Milne is back in town, it soon becomes clear that his arrival has been expected by men who are after his blood. Hungry for revenge and determined to uphold his own very rough brand of justice, Milne searches for the person behind his friend's demise--and leaves a trail of death and destruction more wide-reaching than even he could have expected.

—Peter Robinson
"A Good Day To Die is everything we have come to expect from Kernick — one of the best young crime writers to have emerged in the past five years. It’s a fast-paced yet deeply moral thriller with a thoughtful protagonist who never mistakes himself for a hero."
—Laura Lippman
Praise for The Murder Exchange:
“Pathos, pace, twists and a savage sense of place make this a guilty pleasure.”

- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2014.The world is a hard dark place according to the Author. In the Jungle of big cities and in this case London, the Hero,a renegade policeman and contract killer tries to fight crime, yes fight crime, and dispense his own justice as he understands it.
Avoiding moral judgement, this is a very well written novel, with many twists and turns, sharply sketched characters,an original plot and tons of violence with blood flowing freely. It is happening in crime-infested London where the Police cannot stem the flood anymore,or sometimes are part of it.
The personality of the Hero is intriguing in its mixture of good and evil in his fight against a paedophile ring and to revenge the assassination of an ex colleague, the descriptions of the shadier parts of London and their inhabitants is fascinating in their vivid detail and the denouement is original and unexpected. This is not an Agatha Christie crime story. It is more as if Bram Stoker took to writing police thrillers.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2012This book moves quickly and is easy to read. Solid characters and tough situations abound here. A large dollop of mystery covers all. Nice to have the main guy not be an unbeatable superhero.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2015Thrillers are not my favorite crime novels. I prefer convoluted, slowly unraveling puzzles with complex characters. Even so, Simon Kernick is a master of modern thriller. He puts just a right amount of meat on the bones of this story. The plots are exciting, but reasonably logical, and he doesn't overdo the twist madness that so many thriller writers these days do, Harlan Coben, for example. This is a fun, but intelligent thriller, and needless to say, without fail, I buy every book this man writes.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2016Ex-cop returns to England where he's a wanted man and could face a prison sentence in order to revenge the murder of a friend. His story is interesting, a good quick read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2006Amazon CustomerIn London Detective Sergeant Dennis Milne was known to straddle the legal line when it comes to the sleaze of the city. However, he crosses totally over when he kills a thug; however, besides taking justice in his own hands, the victim turns out to not have been involved with the crime that led Dennis to him. In other words he used excessive force to kill an innocent person. Knowing he would be convicted of the murder, Dennis flees his home country for Asia finally taking residence in the Philippines.
Three years later, Dennis Milne no longer exists; instead Mick Kane earns a living as a vigilante bounty hunter for hire in Sabang Bay. His targets are nasty killers who beat the system. His current assignment is personal as he seeks revenge by killing a Londoner whose actions back home led to the homicide of a friend from his copper days, Detective Asif Malik. To complete his mission means sneaking back into London and hunting down the others.
Milne is a fascinating anti-hero whose ethics propels him to risk his freedom and perhaps his life to avenge his friend while readers will wonder whether he is a champion or a brute. The story line is so action-packed, fans will read it in one sitting, but the adversaries remain somewhat caricatures. Still readers will devour Simon Kendrick's fine thriller in one good reading day.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2022The Christian idea of providence is that God can use secondary causes (good or bad) to bring about His purposes. While this is not a Christian book, I couldn't help but think of providence.
Milne is a decent man with a broken past and stumbling in the present. In the end, he simply wants to do the right thing.
Kernick did a solid job of mixing the two aspects of light and dark - even though it seemed somewhat murky at times. I'll be interested in book 3 to see where the character develops from here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kurzweiliges Entertainment!
Liest sich super und der Charakter ist irgendwie so menschlich. Kann ich nur empfehlen! Macht Sinn den ersten Teil (The Business of Dying) zuerst zu lesen.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good day to read
Simon Kernick's second book about Dennis Milne sees him comfortable running a small business far away from the hassles of London, but inevitably draws him back in all too quickly. That is the basic premise of the book, and if you have already emotionally invested in the character from the first book then you will welcome this. The character is a gritty sort of moralist that essentially passes judgement on others, and then punishes them by his own code of conduct - "DON'T come under his scrutiny" is the best advice I could give someone.
The second book maintains the character of Milne, but also the sordid realism that the first book is encased in. Without giving much away, I can tell you that he again goes after bad men (as he sees them), but this time the story picks up more importance when the reader realises what kind of things the bad characters get up to. The anti-hero becomes the hero in this case, for no matter how much darkness and sin the brooding Milne carries around within himself, he is the lightest and happiest of characters when compared to his quarry. A good book, and in many ways a more complete book than the first ...therefore perhaps a better book.
