Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In this colorful volume, third-generation falconer Parry-Jones opens up the fascinating world of keeping and training birds of prey. The text is instructive both as background and as instruction for the aspiring keeper of owls, buzzards, falcons, eagles, and hawks; and the dramatic illustrations of the various birds give the book an appeal that extends beyond the hobbyists who constitute its primary intended audience. Comprehensive and clearly written, this is a fine introduction to falconry and its related fields of endeavor, as well as something of a coffee-table book for readers who appreciate the natural world. This book has a lot of grammatical errors that make some sentences confusing to read. The author is also insufferably rude to the prospective falconer; here are some actual quotes from the book: “Anyone who thinks that dog leads are suitable for falconry purposes should be shot in my opinion,” and, “[You meed] a whistle (you should be ashamed of yourself if you can’t whistle without one!)”

If you can slog through her tirades about bad falconers — many of which are directed at the reader — you’ll find the book does provide a lot of useful information about raptors, including owls. But it’s a pretty discouraging read that leaves you feeling annoyed afterward.

Overly opinionated which made it a bit uncomfortable to read. I got the book on reviews it was one of the better books when learning falconry but by far I felt this gave me zero help. If it had been the first book I read I may not be interested due to how it came off. Other books I've read were amazing and I found comparing them it to be lacking. While it does have good information in it, its definitely not a book to be read first.

A more accurate title for this work would be "An Introduction To Basic Falconry Housing and Equipment With Half A Page Devoted To Hawk Training".

It was not helpful to me in the slightest. If you know nothing about keeping birds of prey or just have a cursory interest in the subject then this book would be a good light read for you. If you are looking for something that will give you serious insight and tips into successfully training captive birds of prey then you're wasting your time w/this one.

I read this book prior to attending a 5 day course at Jemima's International Centre for Birds of Prey. I found it to be of immense help in preparing me for all aspects of Falconry and for the course itself.
I can honestly endorse this book to anyone wishing to gain some knowledge in Falconry and as a guide to refer to in the coming years.
This, combined with a good course is invaluable to the would be Falconer.

I have bought this for a 10 year old who eventually wants to fly his own hawk. The book has enough depth to appeal to those with more experience, but is written at a level which will keep his interest and supply him with the information he craves without being so adult as to be beyond his understanding. I think this is excellent and would have a wide readership
