― Stitch Gifts
Hoey’s name is familiar to many modern quilters—she’s one of the founders of the popular Fat Quarterly e-zine, and her fabric lines for Moda blend fairy-tale whimsy with cheery color palettes. In her first book, she applies her charming aesthetic to a variety of small-scale embroidery projects. After an introduction to basic embroidery stitches and their uses, Hoey presents a variety of projects that combine small embroidered designs with simple sewing. The motifs are interchangeable, and all are included on reusable iron-on transfers. VERDICT Embroidery is gaining in popularity, especially among younger crafters. Hoey’s cute, vintage-inspired approach will appeal to novice stitchers. ― Library Journal
The word embroidery may conjure up a troop of listless young women waiting and hoping for their Mr Darcy to turn up, or your nana's posy-edged table-cloth, but Aneela Hoey brings embroidery right up to date in Little Stitches. Gone are the days when embroidery was all about alphabets and floral motifs. Your designs can be as modern as you like - from sewing machines and snow globes, to jugs of lemonade and treehouses, and Hoey's twelve whimsical, practical project tutorials show you how to put them to best use. In particular, embroidery is suited to making keepsakes and gifts, just as days gone by, but Hoey's pincushion features a taxi, and her needle case has the Empire State Building on the front. Included in this colorful and detailed guide to stitching, 21st Century-style, are more than 100 appealing illustrations printed on to transfer paper so that you can use and re-use them time and again. Embroidery, unlike some other crafts, can be taken along anywhere you go, and once you've mastered the basic stitches with Hoey's help, you'll want to embroider everything that doesn't move! ― Mumtopia
I’d never held an embroidery hoop in my life, but an hour after checking out Little Stitches by Aneela Hoey, I found myself planted on the couch, obsessed with my new hobby. Little Stitches‘ illustrated instructions on stitch basics are perfect for beginners, but Hoey’s fresh patterns should appeal to stitchers of all expertise. Within a few days I’d completed my adorable empire state building needle case (page 38). With its practical projects and delightful patterns, Little Stitches makes an inexpensive hobby even more accessible. And really, I just can’t get over the adorable patterns! Check it out!

This little bestseller from C&T Publishing is pricey, but for a good reason. Besides featuring Aneela’s wonderful slices-of-life artwork, her style is a little different. There’s a lot of fill-in stitching and texturizing that goes way beyond straight outlines. AND there’s an iron-on transfer sheet pullout so you can immediately start recreating Aneela’s stitched smiles. Don’t worry. If the sheet gets used up, the original patterns are also printed in the book.
― Generation Q Magazine
Grown-up playtime with Aneela Hoey. Little Stitches contains more than 100 sweet embroidery designs as well ad 12 special projects using the embroidery designs. Aneela, who also designs fabric for Moda, learned to embroider in school at the young age of eight. These designs have ageless appeal, so how about starting a mother/daughter embroidery club teaching the next generation the joys of needlework. Different designs could be done each month with “show and tell” and project construction completed at the next month’s gathering. The book is extra useful with the iron-on transfers for each design included in the back of the book.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2013When I bought this book, I flipped through it and thought it was ok. And then it sat around for many months. When I needed some baby gifts for women having second and third children I got the idea of putting an embroidery design on a hoop with the baby's name -- you know nursery decoration. I looked through both this book and Doodle Stitching: The Motif Collection: 400+ Easy Embroidery Designs looking for designs. I ended up stitching jump rope girl and hula hoop girl from this book. And then I was totally hooked. Now I've made swing girl and goth hula hoop girl and hobby horse girl. Next up is bike girl. And yes there are designs for boys, too, but I am currently surrounded by girls. These designs are so very charming. The iron-on paper will easily make 4-5 transfers of each design. The author's approach to embroidery is encouraging but loose -- colors are suggested by hue rather than by brand & number. She has a paragraph about getting over the fear of stitching people and suggestions on how to do hair. She also includes suggestions on tackling skin tone. The designs have a break down of the stitches the author used and how many strands of floss. The suggested stitches are very often back stitch. There is some chain and a few french knots. I am not a novice but I think this book would be a good one for the novice. The author's intent seems to be that you can make beautiful things that don't require years of practice -- a simple is beautiful approach. Although it doesn't tell you exactly which color to buy, it does give you enough info that you can get the same result in the picture and not be restricted to a particular brand of floss. Also, the iron-on method is supremely easy and gets me over the hump of getting started. The author gives explicit permission to photocopy the designs which means you can take it to a copy place and not have issues of violating copy right. I highly recommend this book.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2015I'm not a beginner embroidered, but I sure wish I'd had this book when I was starting out! Beautiful photography, excellent written instructions, and tons of patterns. Which is not to say that this book is only for beginners....I especially like the alternate pattern / design groupings included with each of the projects. Project pages show the colors, stitches used, recommended strands for each element of the design. For example, the project for the little girl with umbrella on the cover of the book: for the sweater, she lists the color of floss, used six strands and lists the type of stitch used. it's broken down by each part: sweater, skirt, boots, figure outline, umbrella, umbrella handle, umbrella handle. Perfect for anyone starting out, but I love it for the ideas and patterns.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2012Have followed Aneela Hoey's blog so I am familiar with her style. And this book does not disappoint. The projects and transfers are just so unique, clearly reflective of Aneela. I look forward to stitching up many of the projects. Her line of Moda fabrics will accent the handwork very nicely.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2013I am generally a machine sewer and hardly will do hand sewing since I'm not so confident in hand stitching besides closing opening of a stuff toy. But I've always wanted to try embroidery and was keen to learn more. I really love Aneela's Red Riding hood fabric range and made them into quilt cover, dresses for my girls. Her stitch pattern is so girly and sweet.
I love it that she provides more the stitch pattern on print and on transfer paper. Although if they can be on CD rom and then I can make some changes and print out on transfer paper would be good. ANyway, it's a beautiful book visually. I can't wait to do up the project to enhance my sewing project like having it on a fabric book cover or a tote bag.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2012The designs in this book are simple, but cute. I like that they are on iron-on paper and regular paper, so you have the choice of ironing or tracing. The projects are OK. A few seemed like they would make good gifts but they all require patchwork. It'd be ideal for someone who also has a sewing machine. I don't. Some of the projects seem a little weird... a hotwater bottle cover? Really? Maybe I hang out with the wrong crowd but I don't know many people who use a hotwater bottle often enough to warrant a cover. Also, the tissue box cover looks sloppy to me. I did like the little clothes pins pouch and the needle folder and the jar cozies. Maybe, if I get a sewing machine I will make some of them. In the meantime, I'm enjoying the desgins just fine.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2022This book gives you simple, cute patterns and examples for easy embroidery stitching. The pictures are clear and it tells you how many strands to use as well as what stitches to use and how to do them.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2015This little book has become a great companion. I had forgotten some of my earlier skills of hand embroidery since it's all mostly done be sewing machine these days. So I was happy to find this book on Amazon. The author has not forgotten a thing. She goes into great detail and instruction. She starts at the basics. Even gives hints on what not to do...common mistakes etc...I love that she included patterns as well...So happy with this book!!! Glad I ordered it....Great reference book too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful and Helpful Little Book
I first learned embroidery stitches when I was a child and I haven't embroidered anything since. Looking for a new hobby, I decided to try out an embroidery project and saw this book on Amazon. I am delighted with it. There are simple projects to attempt, with transfers to iron out. The really helpful attribute of this book is that each project is photographed and then the stitches, thread thickness and colours needed are set out below the pictures. I am thrilled with my new hobby and my increasing confidence is due in no small part to this lovely book.

I enjoyed reading Aneela's book; the patterns are in the back of the book and can be traced or transferred to your fabric of choice. Lots of different and interesting designs, great instructions, beautiful pictures - love it!
