4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

A little Southern comfort goes a long way…

To the world she's Vanessa Valentino, the poison-penned gossip columnist and blogger, but back in Georgia, she's just Tressie Valentine. After digging up one scandalous secret too many, she's forced back home to the sleepy town she thought she'd left behind forever. And now she must face Nathaniel Woodberry, who became her sworn enemy when one of her stories hit too close to home. Yet for some reason, Tressie can't turn off her longing for the irresistible investigative journalist.

Nate can't believe Tressie's back to wreak havoc on the close-knit community they both grew up in, and he can't help holding a grudge against her past deeds. But soon the commitment-wary bachelor discovers that the Southern belle is still a compassionate, loving woman. Nate finds himself drawn to her and he can't stop thinking about seducing her with a healthy dose of down-home passion. But can he stop Tressie from making a mistake that could destroy their hometown—and their blossoming love?

The love story of Tressie and Nate was really good. Two journalists of a different nature find themselves involved in a race to save their hometown Mercy, Ga. Once they had hostile words but they managed a great love affair. Very good story.

Tressie Valentine vowed never to return to Mercy, GA. That is until she's forced to return to sell her beloved Ma'Dear's home. The very same house Tressie grew up in.

While packing up her grandmother's items, Tressie is bum-rushed (literally) by Nate Woodberry. Also, a product of Mercy, Nate isn't pleased with Tressie's sudden reappearance.

Sheer determination throws the two together to cease the destruction of their hometown. They begin to act on their mutual attraction for one another. Sadly, their "fling" is short-lived due to their uncertainties and refusal to admit that they've got a "love thing" and are not just "kicking it".

Believing that Nate has his sights on a former flame, Tressie heads back to the Big Apple to begin a new life. Meanwhile, an unlikely source sets a plan in motion to reunite the two stubborn lovers.

    Favorite Character: Moira

Least Favorite Character: For the first time ever, there isn't one character that I disliked.

What did you find fascinating about the book: The historical facets throughout the storyline.

What did you find the least fascinating about the book: I wish I had read "Running from Mercy".

Great storyline that had some meat to it! Loved the historical connection to the Underground Railroad. This is the 1st time I've read a story by the author. Looking forward to the next one. I think this is her 2nd novel. I think I'll check out the 1st one. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

OMG. This was so good I did not know how this would turn out. But it was really good. She touched on previous characters which made the book more interesting. Tressie & Nate were on FIRE for each other. Their lust turned into love. The most obvious person you think was his match did not feel that way about him it was the opposite that got him caught in the act. Overall it was a really GOOD read. Can not wait for the next book.

This book really caught me off guard. I really didn't expect to fall for the characters and their interactions as much as I did. The love scenes were scorching and the Mercy storyline was actually quite good.

You know that couple that doesn't get along before they start dating? I had a friend like this. They harassed each other all the time, seemed to hate each other. Next thing you know they're dating. It's that fine line between love and hate that you have to watch for.
Nate hates Tessie, right? He doesn't like her job and therefore she is someone he hates... because of what she almost did, but didn't. Tessie thinks Nate is a snob and a bully. Of course neither of them ever noticed how good looking the other was. So as Tessie says the answer is a summer fling while they work to save their hometown. What happens next is not what either expected...except for the bad ending!?
You'll have to read it because it's too juicy to spill here. I laughed, I cried, I wanted to shake them until their teeth rattled. Enjoyed reading the historical information on the underground railroad. Definitely a summer reading must.
I give this story 4 out of 5 clouds.

Even after reading the preview, I didn't realize this was Nate's story (Running From Mercy) until the familiar bag over his shoulder was mentioned then I was like hey.....I really, really liked Tressie, she was so vibrant and easy going. She was just what Nate needed with his serious self. I loved how they came together and also how nice it was to catch up on the town of Mercy. I'm glad there was a mention of the Pam/Nate relationship but would've loved for Chad to have a small dialogue. A super sexy, great read. I'd recommend.
