Yellowstone Kelly wasn’t always a legend, but cast into the wilderness of the uncharted West, he finds he’s a man with a talent for survival
Before Luther “Yellowstone” Kelly was an unexpected hero of the Old West, he was a young greenhorn, cast out of the big city and onto the frontier.  This sequel to
Yellowstone Kelly: Gentleman and Scout begins at the deathbed of Buffalo Bill Cody, where Yellowstone plays cards and reminisces with the legendary frontiersman in his last hours. Looking back on his own life, he recalls the sidesplitting tale of his dalliance with an Episcopal bishop’s daughter. This was the seed from which the legend of Yellowstone Kelly grew. Yellowstone carves an exciting, hilarious, and unforgettable path through the Old West, meeting historical figures and legends along the way. In Minnesota, he becomes the apprentice to noted mountain man Jim Bridger. In Utah, he runs afoul of Brigham Young and the Mormons. Through each adventure and misadventure, Kelly maintains his trademark wit and fortitude, always finding his way through even the stickiest mess.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Reprising the main character from his earlier novel Yellowstone Kelly (Jameson Bks., 1988), Bowen has written a Western which most readers will find to be one or all of the following: illogical, blasphemous, insensitive, and awash with gratuitous violence. Its saving grace is its ribald humor. Reminiscent of Thomas Berger's Little Big Man ( LJ 11/15/64), this bildungsroman of the frontier is, however, written without Berger's perception. Bowen, through main character Luther Kelly, attempts to champion the Native American, but such moments are overwhelmed by the rest of this disjointed tall tale. A better novel encompassing the plight of the Plains Indian is G. Clifton Wisler's Lakota ( LJ 6/15/89). Not an essential purchase.

“Very, very funny.” —
Publishers Weekly
“The Old West is a wonderfully wild place in Bowen’s hands.” —

“[The Yellowstone Kelly series] features an endearing, slightly mysterious protagonist who always has one more unexplored trait, unparalleled dialogue that hints at ethnic or regional inflections, and a very sly sense of humor.” —

This is the funniest, best-written book I've read since "Handling Sin," and overall one of the saddest I've ever read. It reads like a series of tall tales -- ribald, laugh-aloud funny -- involving some of the great names of the "settling" of the Old West, but chronicling the decimation of the buffalo and Native American people. I intend to read his other books and to re-read HS. His sentences are a delight, his descriptions luminous, his characters legendary. Highly recommended.

Bowen has a way with words and I laughed out loud at so.e of the dialog. His characters are human and well portrayed, whether Native American or White. Am looking forward to more of his books.

Great story telling, tongue in cheek humor that makes one laugh out loud. The underpinnings of the tragedy of war are buffered with humor and heart. Bowen gives the reader a glimpse into life during the settling of America and the human prices paid by the conquered and the conqueror.
