About the Author

Philippa Carr (1906–1993) was one of the twentieth century’s premier authors of historical fiction. She was born Eleanor Alice Burford, in London, England. Over the course of her career, she used eight pseudonyms, including Jean Plaidy and Victoria Holt—pen names that signaled a riveting combination of superlative suspense and the royal history of the Tudors and Plantagenets. Philippa Carr was Burford’s last pseudonym, created in 1972. The Miracle at St. Bruno’s, the first novel in Carr’s acclaimed Daughters of England series, was followed by nineteen additional books. Burford died at sea on January 18, 1993. At the time of her death, there were over one hundred million copies of her books in print, and her popularity continues today.

One of my FAVOURITE AUTHORS, love and have ALL of her books.
Loved this entire series, she writes under several names Philippa Carr, Victoria Holt, Jean Plaidy.
Truly one of the most talented writers out there. Love her!!!

All of this Author's books are excellent. She also writes under another name, Victoria Holt, whose novels are also absolutely awesome.I am on my second time around with the novels under both names.

Lucie was bland, passive, trusting, naive. Her friend said Lucie had a mind like a lawyer. But lawyers are smarter about analyzing things and people, not trusting as easily as Lucie did. Her lawyer-like-ness was speaking calmly with reason.

If you look at an outline of the plot with events, twists, and the roles of characters, it’s very good. But the filling in of words for 300 pages was plodding. I felt like it was assigned reading, instead of wanting to read it. Some parts were repetitive with Lucie pondering and speaking the same things over and over again.

Another negative is that it is written in 1st person Lucie. A story has to be super good to overcome that.

I liked the idea of the black swan, a person who looks good, or wonderful, but is menacing with hatred underneath.

This is more like fiction than romance. There is not much relationship development. There is a happy ending.

DATA:
Narrative mode: 1st person Lucie. Story length: 338 pages. Swearing language: none. Sexual language: none. Number of sex scenes: one was referred to with one sentence. Setting: around 1890 England and France. Copyright: 1990. Genre: mystery suspense with a romantic element.

Lucie has lived a very unusual life. Through a strange turn of events, she was raised in an "adopted" household with her "adopted" sister, Belinda. She grew up knowing she was not of the same class, and therefore not of the same treatment. Then, unexpectedly, the truth comes out. She is actually the real daughter, and Belinda is the adopted one! All of this was revealed in the previous book in the series "The Changeling". When "The Black Swan" opens, Lucie is the beloved daughter of Benedict Landson, a distinguished politician. Her life is shattered when he is assassinated right in front of her. To make matters worse, her fiancé, Joel, is murdered while on a mission to Africa. She gradually grows away from her tragedy, and becomes more resigned to life. However, she is haunted by the apparition of her father's murderer, whom she helped convict and thus had an indirect hand in his execution. She meets a brother and sister, of whom she grows fond. Eventually, they all live in the same household and strange things begin to happen. Lucie soon realizes that someone is trying to kill her, and will do so soon, unless Lucie can do something to stop it.
I enjoyed this book very much, as I seem to do with all of Philippa Carr's. I did figure out some of the mystery, but I was very shocked with the actual ending. I would recommend reading this after you have read "The Changeling" so that the big surprises from the previous book are not lost.

Words can not describe my feelings for this series of books. Philippa Carr was an excellent writer, there is never a dull moment.

My love for history, suspense and romance turned me towards her books, and I do not regret it.

The serie starts with Tudor period, and takes us on a joyride through English history, French revolution and everyday life. Told by generations of daughters, starting with Catherine in 1547.

Queen Elizabeth, Charles II, restoration, Jacobites, Anne Stuart, French revolution, it's all here. And of course, there are murders, villains and a who-done-it.
