In Pursuit of Early Mammals (Life of the Past) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 24 ratings

“Mesozoic mammal fossils are the focus of this fascinating book, which reviews both the fossils themselves and the history of their discovery.” —Choice

In Pursuit of Early Mammals presents the history of the mammals that lived during the Mesozoic era, the time when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, and describes their origins, anatomy, systematics, paleobiology, and distribution. It also tells the story of the author, a world-renowned specialist on these animals, and the other prominent paleontologists who have studied them. Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska was the first woman to lead large-scale paleontological expeditions, including eight to the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, which brought back important collections of dinosaur, early mammal, and other fossils. She shares the difficulties and pleasures encountered in finding rare fossils and describes the changing views on early mammals made possible by these discoveries.

“A thorough review of the current state of early mammalian paleontology presented through the unique historical filter of someone who was at the foremost of the field for over half a century.” —The Quarterly Review of Biology

“Whether she’s talking about how mammals evolved their distinctive ear bones, or how she built a cabin out of plywood during a particularly cold field season in the Gobi, you know that a remarkable, passionate person is telling a story of science and adventure in her own words.” —Priscum

“A fascinating window into the development of the field . . . The perspective of an individual at the center of these developments is captivating, informative, and has never before been published.” —Gregory P. Wilson, University of Washington

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska provides a thorough review of the current state of early mammalian paleontology presented through the unique historical filter of someone who was at the foremost of the field for over half a century."

"Mesozoic mammal fossils are the focus of this fascinating book, which reviews both the fossils themselves and the history of their discovery. Paleontologist Kielan-Jaworowska . . . is uniquely qualified to synthesize the state of this field with its history; she has worked with various international collaborators for 50 years . . . Highly recommended."

(Choice)

"Overall, this book provides an excellent description of the Mesozoic mammals. In addition to the author's personal experiences, she provides an overview of today's knowledge, with excellent illustrations, readable and up-to-date, and accompanied by a wealth of information on the people who have helped to further our knowledge. The reviewer is not aware of a similar work by another author. The book is recommended for anyone who is interested in the early history of the mammal . . ."

(Zentralblatt für Geologie und Paläontologie)

"Part textbook, part personal narrative, this book succeeds in blending genres because of the warmth of the author. Whether she's talking about how mammals evolved their distinctive ear bones, or how she built a cabin out of plywood during a particularly cold field season in the Gobi, you know that a remarkable, passionate person is telling a story of science and adventure in her own words."

Review

"Nobody is better suited or more qualified to summarize how research on early mammal evolution has made its numerous breakthroughs than Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska. No one alive has had her kind of long and rich experience and her very diverse collaborations with scientists worldwide. . . . In my view, in the whole area of studies on Mesozoic mammal evolution for the past 100 years, only the late American paleontologist George Gaylord Simpson would be her equal."

(Zhe-Xi Luo Carnegie Museum of Natural History)

"A fascinating window into the development of the field . . . The perspective of an individual at the center of these developments is captivating, informative, and has never before been published . . . An excellent starting point for any student interested in this field and for laymen interested in the path of scientific discovery."

Top reviews from the United States

The literature on Mammal life from the Age of Dinosaurs is lacking, however several good works have been published in recent years by superbly qualified authors of which Jaworowska is probably the best of the lot. This book is her second on the subject and updates information on mammals of the Triassic,Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods in detail. Photos and drawings are also in abundance. If you are interested in Dinosaurs and their world, this volume will help you to understand about their furry contemperaries none of which reached a size larger than a possum.

Much easier to read and to follow than _Mammals in the Age of Dinosaurs_. Information on paleontology and the history of discovery are not well integrated, however. The nearly complete omission of discoveries prior to 1930 yields an unbalanced treatment.

This is & perhaps has to be,a technical book; the best customers probably are those who are entranced by the origin of mammals, not just the more general topic of vertebrates or tetrapods. Not much of a story line here, except about paleontologists. Great book for serious students.
If you are a regular Amazon customer you should, if in doubt as to whether to buy, look at some of the pages from the book Amazon allows you to sample---Perhaps,especially, the last chapter: Search for "diversification" in the last chapter, around pages 219+.

This book is basically a diary of the author's and her colleagues' travels in pursuit of early mammals. Unless you are interested in an archaeologists' who's who, there is very little info on early mammal life in the past.
I do not reccomend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on fossil mammals ever
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 18, 2021
I love the book. One of the best books ever written about mammals from the dinosaur age. Professor Kielan-Jaworowska was a great specialist in this field. Can't even express how happy I am with finally getting this book in my hands.

1.0 out of 5 stars Riesen-Enttäuschung
Reviewed in Germany on August 4, 2013

1.0 out of 5 stars Falscher Titel
Reviewed in Germany on November 22, 2014
Schade !
