Recipes and Dreams from an Italian Life Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 35 ratings

Experience Italy in this inspired collection of simple and practical recipes from the author of Provence to Pondicherry.

No one does beautiful cookbooks like Tessa Kiros, and her track record speaks for itself. In
Recipes for an Italian Life, the beloved author celebrates the heritage of the country she has chosen to call home. This whimsically feminine book is a tribute to the women in our lives–mothers, mothers-in-law, grandmothers–and the important lessons we learn from them. With accessible, delicious recipes ranging from robust family dishes to quirky cakes and old-fashioned sauces and preserves, this book is a precious heirloom for today. The chapters are based on rooms and items in the home, such as the bread oven; vegetable patch; snack box; pasta pot; meat, fish, and chicken in the dining room; and the ice box. Some of the recipes include: Basil Liqueur, Sweet Pizza, Artichoke and Herb Soup, Potato and Truffle Purses, Roast Rabbit with Grapes, Chickpeas with Prawns, Marmalade Cake, and Cappuccino Ice Cream.

Praise for Recipes and Dreams from an Italian Life

“Hundreds of cookbooks are published each year but only a handful of them truly transport the reader into another time and place. Here Kiros…does just that, whisking readers off to Italy, where they’re welcomed into the kitchens of a number of Italian matriarchs to discuss life, love, and cooking. . . . Those looking for reliable, time-tested recipes for the classics will find this to be a treasure trove. Kiros has created the literary equivalent of an exuberant Italian mother-in-law, and though it’s sure to find a welcome place on many a bookshelf, it won’t likely remain shelved for long.” —Publishers Weekly

“Masterfully designed and photographed, Recipes and Dreams from an Italian Life is an authentic Italian keepsake.” —Foreword Reviews

About the Author

TESSA KIROS is the author of seven bestselling titles, including: Apples for Jam, Falling Cloudberries, Twelve, Piri Piri Starfish: Portugal Found, and Venezia. No-one captures the spirit and soul of a place quite like Tessa, born in London to a Finnish mother and a Greek-Cypriot father, her family moved to South Africa when she was four. At the age of 18 Tessa set off to travel, to learn all she could about the world's cultures and traditions and discover new ways of living and eating. She has cooked at London's The Groucho Club and in Sydney, Athens, and Mexico. On a trip to Italy, to study the Italian language and food, she met her husband Giovanni; they now live in Tuscany with their two children.

This cookbook is not only beautiful to look at but I love the way the recipes are made with fresh, healthy ingredients. This is an excellent cookbook for one who wants to make authentic Italian meals.

I must admit to taking this book off the shelf and just enjoying reading it on a chilly spring evening. All of Tessa's books give us recipes to feed people as well as the pictures and prose to feed our souls. It is always good when both the food and photos can be recommended.

I do agree with the reviewer who complained about the light grey font but I don't hold it against this cookbook, I have a couple recently purchased cookbooks which are even harder to read. It seems to be the fad among cookbook publishers these days (especially those with nice pictures) to make the font way too light. I hope they soon realize most of us have a difficult time reading such lightly colored font while trying to actually cook.

Kiros' books are beautiful which is the main reason I buy them! I enjoy the photographs, personal narratives, and the excellent book design. The recipes are of secondary importance for me although I have prepared several of them successfully. This is a lovely book just to look through and enjoy - perhaps while drinking a cup of espresso.

The light grey print is hard to read, terrible idea. Almost worthless. The photos are nice, but that's no help.

This is a great book but it is an exact copy of Lemoncello and Linen Water, which I already own. I got excited when I saw this as thought it was another new book, foolishly did not take the option of 'looking inside. Also the alert by Amazon was posted after I purchased the book. However it is a stunning book and the recipes easy to follow and all have turned out as they should that `I have tried.

I brought this book as I like the photographs and Italian images, I feel that this is more of a lifestyle book reflecting on women in the home. The recipes in the book are good but I think twelve and apples for jam are better recipe books.
