Sandstorm: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 365 ratings

“Death, mayhem, murder, Mossad, nukes, maniac billionaires set on world domination . . . Sandstorm has all the muscle-power of its title.” —Brad Meltzer, #1 New York Times–bestselling author

Lurking in the shadows, away from any government oversight, a secret partnership has been formed between an Israeli spymaster pulling the strings of the most efficient killing machine the Mossad has to offer and an exclusive billionaire boys club that wants to dictate the New World Order. In their pocket is a powerful US senator who aspires to the presidency. Success means vast wealth and increased power, and they’ll stop at nothing to succeed.

CIA operative Nora Mossa is trained to kill when the situation calls for it. She’s also capable of disappearing into thin air. Being efficient, deadly, and beautiful, however, won’t be enough to protect her after her mentor Erica Janway is assassinated in her Maryland home. With everyone in the Agency suspect, Nora turns to the only person capable of keeping her alive while she uncovers the truth behind Janway’s demise—her former lover and ex-CIA agent Alex Koves. That is, if he will even speak to her.

With danger lurking in every corner of the globe, Koves and Nora must stay alive long enough to piece together the clues to a deadly plot capable of killing thousands in the Middle East. And the clock is ticking . . .

Optioned to be a major motion picture!

Sandstorm is excitement detonated! Taut and terrifying, Alan Lee’s debut thriller drops us into the kill zone of possibilities lurking behind real headlines.” —Vince Flynn, #1 New York Times–bestselling author

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A veteran CIA officer stumbles upon a conspiracy and is executed for her nosiness. A friend of the murder victim, Nora Mossa, another CIA agent, quickly finds her life in danger. She flees, deciding the only person who can help her is Alex Koves, an ex-agent and Nora’s former lover; unfortunately, he wants nothing to do with her. But Alex can’t resist the excitement he feels when on an active assignment. Not knowing whom to trust, they are forced to work off the grid if they are to find retribution for the death of their friend. The conspiracy involves high-up members of the government helping Iran develop nuclear capability, and they are willing to kill anyone who stands in their way. The character development here is first-rate, and the story line is intense. What could easily have been just another conspiracy thriller feels fresh and new in the capable hands of first-novelist Lee. The ending leaves some of the story unresolved, suggesting that a series is in the making. That would be a very good thing. --Jeff Ayers

SANDSTORM by Alan L. Lee is a phenomenal novel that from page one immediately sweeps you into the story. Lee deftly tells the story through the use of an omniscient narrator, not easy to accomplish in a contemporary novel. Don't worry, the story isn't laid out in a road map. Lee keeps us guessing as to which corner we will round next.

In SANDSTORM, world stability is threatened when a CIA agent is murdered. Agent Norma Mossa, her protégée, is next in line to be eliminated. Because she can trust no one, she seeks the help of ex-CIA agent, Alex Koves, who steps up to protect not only his ex-lover Mossa but also to right the wrongs of his past and to solve the present crisis.

I love a great spy thriller, and Lee does not disappoint. That this is Lee's debut novel speaks to just how talented an author he is. His command of the written word is enthralling. And his ability to tell a story is a gift.

This was great read with events that could certainly happen in today's world. For a while it is hard to know who will end up being the good guys and who will be the bad guys. Even when you think you have it all figured out there are some surprises at the end.
It has interesting characters and interesting locations with an ending that leads to the next book. I look forward to it.

I ordered this book because it was written by a local anchorman who was retiring from reporting news to write more books. Just thought why not support the local guy and started reading with no expectations. Wow was I surprised! Alan is fantastic at character development and weaving a storyline bringing all the different characters together with a very impactful story. It goes from the Washington D.C. ABC companies to the Caribbean, Paris, Iran, etc. The story was interesting and totally enjoyable. I rarely find a book that I can't put down but this was one of them. I just had to find out what would happen next. I am very much looking forward to his next book and I have a feeling that this will be a great series if he chooses to go with some of the same characters again. If you like international intrigue, mystery, thriller type books you will love this book. I know I did! Keep them coming Alan.

I am a devotee of the Mackenzie August thrillers written by Alan Lee. This is the first book in another series that moves out of the world of private investigation and into espionage. What follows is a global political/espionage thriller with great characters, a plot that could be culled out of today’s headlines, and political intrigue in the upper circles of government in Israel and the USA. It is engaging, and really fun, with just the right amount of tension and romance to keep it fun and exciting. I will be back for more.

Being a fan of Vince Flynn and Brad Thor, I was intrigued when a link to a Thor interview introduced me to fellow Michigander (well he lives here now) Alan Lee and his upcoming book, Sandstorm. When it came out I made a point to buy it. I've since read it twice and found it very entertaining and just plain fun both times. In fact I enjoyed the book even more the second time I read it. That might be an indication that there were some rough edges to some of the character introductions that made it a tad easier to follow on the second read. But the fact that I enjoyed it enough to start it a second time (and on my anniversary) indicates that these issues were in no way an impediment.

I'm not going to go into an in depth analysis here but will make a few additional points. There were a couple characters who could have been more completely fleshed out. That said at least 3 of the characters made a big enough impact that I'm looking forward to this being a series on the order of Mitch Rapp, Scott Harvath, or Pike Logan.

As an example of the 'fun' aspect of the writing, I'll finish with this darkly humorous quote:
"The pair fell in unison, as if synchronized dying were a sporting event."

Good plot line, imaginatively developed. OK characterization but I found the characters to be a little cardboard and simple. Two minor criticisms: I thought dialogue was stiff from time to time and the author is the adverb king. The author, as a news reader for Fox "news" has had plenty of practice at creating fiction and it has helped him, no doubt, produce a pretty good work of fiction.

This is a good thriller, but not of the caliber you get from Vince Flynn, Brad Thor, Brad Meltzer, or Joel Rosenberg. With so many authors competing in this genre, I'm sticking to my favorites.

I would love to have a friend like Duncan. Nora was moody, but without her, there would be no story. Nathan; his character, intrigued me the most.! I've read both books in this series and enjoyed both!

I came across this book by accident, and am glad I did. It was an action packed page turner. So good I read the sequel right after and it was every bit as good. Less than two days to finish as I couldn’t put it down. Looking forward to another book from Alan when it comes along.

The best way to describe the book is , it is bit Vince Flynn / Brad Thor / and Ludlum rolled into one. The late Vince Flynn also liked it, as he recommended Sandstorm to people to read, that is why i bought and i am glad i did !
Really looking forward to the next one.

I am an avid reader of modern spy fiction. My particular favourites being Vince Flynn and Brad Thor. Unfortunately this book does not reach the level of those authors.
The pacing of the action, so critical in a novel of this genre is pedestrian, the characters evoke no sympathy and there is no real focus on the main protagonist. Is it Alex, Nora or Champion - I just don't know. More to the point I rapidly came to the conclusion that I just did not care enough.
Perhaps the most telling thing about this novel is that books from the same genre take me an average of two to three days to finish. I have been reading this book for two weeks now and I am yet to finish.
