This is one of Greg Cox's best ST books. A good mix of good characterization, humor, and mystery. The characters interact just like the show which is very important in ST novels. A lot of good character moments as the mystery of the aliens slowly enters the story.

Very good book. The characterizations were believable, which is very important to me. I am usually not satisfied with a lot of these books because the authors sometimes embellish or distort the character's personalities to the point where they barely resemble what you see in the show. This author did a good job writing the characters. Someone criticized this for reading like a TV episode Well, that is exactly what I want.

The plot was interesting and gripping.I could see a tamer and shorter version of this story as an actual episode.

This book was very well written. I definitely didn't see what happens coming. It read like an episode of Voyager. the characters were written to a tea. Highly recommend this one. Sit back and enjoy.

This novel made me feel like I was watching Voyager on TV again , but in movie form. At first it put me in mind of the paradise planet Captain Kirk and crew found in the original series. However, this becomes a horror planet that may be too much for young readers. The author does a good job in the exploring of each character and with references to past stories we have seen on TV.

While I enjoyed this book as with most star trek books I must say I was a little irritated. The book was the usual "get to know another species and all is not what it appears to be". I enjoyed the fact that part of the focus was on Kes as well as other characters not just the main characters because for a crew of 150 we sure don't get to read about them alot. So I did enjoy that. What I did not like (extremely did not) was that the author has Captain Janeway transporting the aliens to her ship after she witnesses there leader torturing one of his subjects (yes the guy deserved it but still). So I thought the book was interesting had some really good parts really enjoyed the end but I think it needed to be developed in certain areas. This book is not for a beginner into Star Trek.

I enjoyed the twist this story, I just could not figure out what was up with the aliens until the author revealed the secret.
It was very unexpected...

It was an interesting story. I'm a Voyager fan.
It used all the characters instead of just focusing on one or two.

4.0 out of 5 stars A scary and unpredictable Voyager-story.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 29, 2014
I would say that this book is one of the most scary Voyager-books I've read so far, and it's good too. It's about a time when the crew desperately needed shore leave and stumbled upon what seemed to be a paradise; it was a beautiful planet and the inhabitants were most welcoming. But when Chakotay has a nightmarish vision from his spirit guide and Kes due to her psychic ability hear screaming things starts to feel a bit less perfect... So what could the inhabitants possibly be hiding and why?

One of the things I liked most about this book is that it's not predictable in any way. You get that something is very wrong and that whatever that is it's very bad, but the mystery is so well hidden within the pages of the book so that you get to keep the excitement for as long as possible. I like the story and how the writer describes it all so vividly. Especially the end of the book is very exciting with several things going on at once.

4.0 out of 5 stars This was a bit like SGA's Wraith appearing in the Star Trek universe

This was a bit like SGA's Wraith appearing in the Star Trek universe, a well crafted story, it didn't throw us any curveballs & I had a very good idea what the Ryol were before anyone in the story did.
