Beethoven: The Music and the Life Kindle Edition
An authoritative work offering a fresh look at Beethoven’s life, career, and milieu. “Magisterial” —New York Review of Books.
This brilliant portrayal weaves Beethoven's musical and biographical stories into their historical and artistic contexts. Lewis Lockwood sketches the turbulent personal, historical, political, and cultural frameworks in which Beethoven worked and examines their effects on his music. "The result is that rarest of achievements, a profoundly humane work of scholarship that will—or at least should—appeal to specialists and generalists in equal measure" (Terry Teachout, Commentary). Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. "Lewis Lockwood has written a biography of Beethoven in which the hours that Beethoven spent writing music—that is, his methods of working, his interest in contemporary and past composers, the development of his musical intentions and ideals, his inner musical life, in short—have been properly integrated with the external events of his career. The book is invaluable." —Charles Rosen "Lockwood writes with poetry and clarity—a rare combination. I especially enjoyed the connection that he makes between the works of Beethoven and the social and political context of their creation—we feel closer to Beethoven the man without losing our wonder at his genius." —Emanuel Ax "The magnum opus of an illustrious Beethoven scholar. From now on, we will all turn to Lockwood's Beethoven: The Music and the Life for insight and instruction." —Maynard Solomon "This is truly the Beethoven biography for the intelligent reader. Lewis Lockwood speaks in his preface of writing on Beethoven's works at 'a highly accessible descriptive level.' But he goes beyond that. His discussion of the music, based on a deep knowledge of its context and the composition processes behind it, explains, elucidates, and is not afraid to evaluate; while the biographical chapters, clearly and unfussily written, and taking full account of the newest thinking on Beethoven, align closely with the musical discussion. The result is a deeply perceptive book that comes as close as can be to presenting the man and the music as a unity."—Stanley Sadie, editor, The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians "Impressive for both its scholarship and its fresh insights, this landmark work—fully accessible to the interested amateur—immediately takes its place among the essential references on this composer and his music."—Bob Goldfarb, KUSC-FM 91.5 "Lockwood writes like an angel: lucid, enthusiastic, stirring and enlightening. Beethoven has found his ablest interpreter."—Jonathan Keates, The Spectator "There is no better survey of Beethoven's compositions for a wide audience."—Michael Kimmelman, The New York Times Book Review

This book is the first biography of Beethoven I have ever read, and I am still working on it.
That said, to paraphrase, the author Lewis Lockwood describes this book as leaning more toward the music than the life of Beethoven. But as someone interested in both, I've found the coverage of both aspects ample and have no complaints on either front.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 20164.5 Stars - Very insightful book. A must read for anyone interested in classical music. Tells you everything you need to know about Beethoven. Lockwood writes with clear and informative prose. The book is also very well researched and organized. The only reason I have to knock off a half star is because I wish Lockwood would have spent more time talking about Beethoven's personal life. The book is about 75% music, 25% bio. Personally, I would have preferred to have more biography, and less music analysis. But that's just me. Overall though, it's a great book.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2018I read a hard copy of this book a while back, but I'm consolidating space so I got the kindle version, which I am now re-reading.
Prof. Lockwood is one our pre-eminent Beethoven scholars, and this is a scholarly work - one which expects the reader to have a serious attitude about the subject and some knowledge of Beethoven's catalogue and music in general. It's not a 'popular', commercial work, but I expect it will take an important place in the scholarly literature on the man who was perhaps the greatest, and certainly personally most difficult and inscrutable of any composer of importance the world has known.
Other reviewers, as well as Lockwood himself in his preface, which you can find in the free sample download, explain his somewhat novel approach to this "music/man chronicle" (note that I emphasize MUSIC, as does the title of the book itself, for reasons explained therein), which I personally found effective and rewarding.
Subject matter experts may find this book wanting in in-depth technical analysis and biographical details, those looking to be entertained by such exaggerated and demeaning stories about Beethoven as have been promulgated in the popular sphere should look elsewhere for their titillation. As a serious amateur musician and musicologist wannabe with a great love for Beethoven's music, this book strikes a perfect compromise: Important insights into the quite human and relatable Beethoven the Man, intertwined with an expert's view of the development and historical/biographical context of his Music.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2014This book, Beethoven: The Music and the Life, was part of my daughter's Wish List and I ordered it for her birthday. Although it was used, the condition was remarkable. Upon thorough examination, I could find no pencil marks or ink blotches, no dog eared pages, no smudges and no tears. The spine was solid and the cover was in good condition. Moreover, the book arrived on time. I would recommend this book for anyone who appreciates music history or biographies.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2015Too academic. I wanted his story and I can't get through all the "everything"
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2014Every fan of Beethoven will want to read this book. It includes the chronologies of his compositions and other life events, and discussions of most of his works.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2013I used this for my Beethoven seminar class. It was a very interesting read. It did get lengthy when he described pieces, but it is still useful. It's a great resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good book covering both the life and music of Beethoven
This book is not a pure biography, but covers the music of Beethoven as well. In fact, more of the book covers the music than the person. I found this interesting since it sets the composition of the music into the context of the life of Beethoven. There is still plenty of biographical information and the book keeps moving without spending undue time and effort on trivia.
There are interesting sections covering, for example, the pianos available to Beethoven and his knowledge of Bach and Handel.
The book is well researched and contains extensive notes and references. There is also a chronology of Beethoven's life and a list of all the works discussed in the book listed by opus number.
This is an interesting book to read from cover to cover and will be a useful reference regarding Beethoven's music. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Beethoven.

I read this book very very carefully as I prepared to appear on Mastermind with Beethoven as my specialist subject. Based on this book's breadth, depth, clear style and authoritative research, I take it to be the best Beethoven bio.
