"Where the armies go, the law soon departs." Ethan Matlock affirming a harsh truth of war.

Philadelphia, 1777

Without General Washington, the whole American enterprise might easily collapse, for no one else has demonstrated the ability to keep together an army that constantly threatens to fall apart.

Boldly Ethan infiltrates the heart of the British military, occupiers of grand old Philadelphia, where elegant officers posture in drawing rooms and frolic in the bedrooms of the rich. Surrounded by twenty thousand redcoats, aware that the slightest misstep could lead to the gallows, Ethan resorts to vicious measures to unravel a conspiracy of power-hungry men. Against his better judgment, he tangles with the provocative Miss Maddie Graves, whose fierce devotion to the American cause ironically threatens his mission.

Wonderful Book

Wonderful Book
Gretchen Jeannette has become one of my favorite authors. She captures the essentials of the human soul and skillfully lays out a moving historical narrative. I love the way she tells me a story. This was more of a historical fiction and less of a historical romance. GJ can really tell a story and I wish more of my friends would read her work. Having said that I highly recommend it to anyone who loves history. Especially the Revolutionary War. I can’t say enough good things about this book.I loved watching Ethan and Maddie as their romance blossomed. This book was suspenseful, mysterious and heartfelt. I was on the edge of my seat many times and I’m sad to see it end. I just purchased her last novel so I hope she’s working on something else. :)Thanks to BooksGoSocial via Netgalley for the ebook. I’ve voluntarily leaving my review.

What a captivating read! I couldn't put it down. The fast-paced plot will have readers of historical fiction buying all three books in Gretchen Jeannette's, Heartbeat of Revolution Series. Combined with a writing style that immerses a reader into the Revolutionary War Setting and believable characters from the era, I felt as if I had time-traveled to grand-old Philadelphia, circa 1775. Well-developed characters blended with real historical figures, inside a story laced with love, made this one of the finest Revolutionary War romances I have read in some time. Although some vulgarity exists, it is written well, further developing character arcs. A must read for history buffs and romance lovers, alike. I have ordered all three books for my ever-expanding library. Now on to - A Devil of a Time!

Wow, this will make a great movie one day! I rarely say it about books, but this one was that good! It was fast-paced, meticulously researched, beautifully written and impossible to put down.
It’s historical fiction which takes place during the War of Independence in the United States. An infiltrated spy, Ethan Montgomery, works his way right into the den of the high British command, set on finding a “rat” – another infiltrated agent, only within American lines – whose mission is nothing less but to assassinate George Washington himself. Only, while playing this dangerous game in Robert Sinclair’s house, who is also implemented in the assassination plot, Ethan finds himself getting more and more attached to Sinclair’s beautiful niece, Maddie. To add to Ethan’s problems, Maddie seems to have her own secrets…
I adored the main characters. They were so real that by the end of the novel I felt like I knew them all. Ethan was also an amazingly complex protagonist who can be honorable and courageous, and also can have a very dark side, which always fascinates me and makes me empathize with such characters even more. Maddie too is an incredibly strong woman, who is worth admiration.
Authentic language, natural flowing dialogue and unforgettable characters really make this novel a must read for all lovers of historical fiction genre. Five huge stars.

Loved this book. Ploughed through it right after reading A Devil of A Time. Never been super interested in Revolutionary war or colonial history, but love the amount of research she puts into her stories, always finding that sweet spot of giving a great amount of detail without boring the hell out of you. Characters are well developed and believable, and though there weren't crazy twists, I also didn't find it predictable the way a lot of romances are.
This book is a romance with a lot of meat on its bones, and if you're a die hard trashy romance fan that cares little about fleshed out stories and good subplots, you may want to pass, but if you like a good romance that's fleshed out and treats you like an intelligent human being, definitely check it out.

While I enjoy historical reading and a periodic love story, I thoroughly enjoyed "The Devil Take Tomorrow" and had a difficult time putting it down. Characters are well developed yet the plot takes them on unexpected journeys. Not one page is predictable but comes together to not only tell a great story, but enlighten the readers mind about the events of the day. Yes, I learned a few things about the Revolutionary War that I did not know and had not thought about. It makes me appreciate what those early revolutionists went through for my new country. The author obviously has researched details of history and does a great job sharing that insight.

I recommend this enjoyable read for all adults and older teenagers (as there are adult themes). It's one of my top recommended books ever. Not only does it have a great story line, but it is well written and well edited.

So...the main character was pretty psychotic, and basically an avenging angel to root out war crimes by way of...more war crimes? I must say, offing the butler while saying "Your name *was* Thomas," after said Butler had grumbled over being called Tom, was quite memorable and has basically become hashtag for me now. Also the weird ritual where he like...made the sign of the cross on his enemy's forehead in blood was very...uhh...Wicker Man-esque. But hey, at least he did get a good stern lecture from a frazzled Mister Washington, who didn't want to deal with this dude doing him too many favors with over-the-top side quests that reflected poorly on the cause. One character I did quite like, who offered a bit of nuance to the whole thing, was our psycho's British buddy named Fraser, who bounces around with him on an eternal quest for wine, women, and...I mean, that's it. Maybe not the best influence, but you know, at least more on the fun-loving, as opposed to sadistic, side. And his finale, including the letter he dictates home, was rather moving. I kind of wish the whole book was about pub-hopping Scotty instead, and we really got a proper deathbed conversion from him, which was hinted at, but not explored to the depths I would have liked. Anyway...northern Britons just make everything a little more bearable, and beam us up from planets we don't necessarily want to be on.
