Panzer IV at War, 1939–1945 (Images of War) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 113 ratings

This pictorial WWII history examines the powerful German tank as it was deployed in numerous combat zones throughout the war.

Initially the Panzer IV was designed as an infantry support tank, but it proved to be so diverse and effective that it earned a unique tactical role on the battlefield. As a result, it became the only German tank to remain in production during the war. With comprehensive captions and text, this superb book tells the story of the Panzer IV through key battles in Poland, France, North Africa, Italy, Russia, and North West Europe.

With rare photographs from wartime archives,
Panzer IV at War shows how the Panzer IV evolved and describes how the Germans carefully utilized all available reserves and resources to build and deploy numerous variants. It depicts how these formidable tanks were adapted and up-gunned to face the ever-increasing enemy threat.

The Panzer IV chassis was converted into more models than any other Panzer in service. As well as the various prototype projects and command tanks, observation vehicles, ammunition carriers, recovery vehicles, and amphibious armored ferry vehicles that saw service, the book also shows numerous converted anti-tank propelled vehicles.

For serious modellers this book offers a solid collection of photographs of the Pzkpfw IV across the duration of the war.

It's a good book. I agree with others on the spelling and grammar, it's not good, but the cool pictures make up for it, and it keeps your interest. I like how the writing is brief and to the point and does not seem to ramble. I enjoyed seeing images of the divisional insignia in the back and cool little things added here and there, again, it WILL keep your interest and is worth a read if you like panzers!

" tells the story of the production of the Panzer IV to the key battles in Poland, France, North Africa, Italy, Russia and North West Europe."

I enjoy anything that has to deal with the Panzer IV. But with the above quote from description, I was hoping for photos from the Western and North Africa campaign. But instead, the whole book is about the Russian campaign.

The photos were great, but was hoping more on the Western and DAK.

I found this book very good as nothing compares to actual war pictures. Dirty, gritty, obscene, or bloody, that is truth. Even though nazi photographers were not allowed to picture their own German losses, I can assume other photographers took them of dead Germans and destroyed tanks. Or at least they took pictures against orders. I am glad they did..... Corey

If you are interested in the Panzer IV then this book is a good one to get for its photographic content but I was more than a bit disappointed in the numerous caption errors. I was also puzzled about the inclusion of a few photos of Panzer III's that technically had no place in this book.

Panzer IV at War 1939-1945 is unexceptional. The photos are not particularly new or interesting, the quality of their contrast and clarity is indifferent, and the captions are both repetitive and hit and miss at the same time. Apparently someone decided that finding sufficient PzKpfw IV photos in the needed format was too much trouble, so there are several PzKpfw III photos included as well as several of vehicles which used the PzKpfw III/IV or PzKpfw IV chassis but weren't PzKpfw IVs. The caption for the Sturmpanzer IV (Sturmpanzer 43) perpetuates the Allied-invented name of "Brummbaer" with its type designation mentioned only in passing using a bastardized German-English spelling, and "Brummbaer" is mistranslated as usual. 4. PD tanks are identified as 3. PD with a "Berlin Bear" unit insignia, inexcusable in 2012. Apparently Paul Thomas is out-of-date with his research and doesn't know obsolete German or what a Berlin Bear looks like. One photo from page 14 is repeated with a new caption on page 29, indicating that this book was lackadaisically edited and proofed by Charles Markuss and Pen & Sword staff. The arrangement of the photos, while generally chronological, is often haphazard enough to be confusing or misleading to casual readers. PzKpfw IVs in Africa are ignored. The camouflage section of the Appendix "Panzer Camouflage and Panzer IV Variants" has some generally accurate elements, but the section is quite poorly written and misleading. The variant titles and writing in the variants section are also poorly and confusingly written, this whole appendix giving the impression of an afterthought to fill out a required number of pages.
This book will be most useful to those interested in the PzKpfw IVs in Bulgarian service, as it has ten pages of lesser-known photos of those vehicles. For those interested in the PzKpfw IV in Wehrmacht service, this book is not among the better offerings.

A well presented work with many photos to help explain the text.
I thought the review at the end of the book was good, also the explanation of the difficulties of paint production.
A good bok for the scale modeler.
