Invasive Plants: Guide to Identification and the Impacts and Control of Common North American Species Second Edition, Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 43 ratings

Newly updated: “Invasive plants are ecological tumors that degrade food webs wherever they go. The third edition of [this book] is an invaluable reference.” —Douglas Tallamy, New York Times–bestselling author of Nature’s Best Hope

This easy-to-use, wide-ranging guide to invasive plants in North America features full-color photos and descriptions of more than 250 alien species—both terrestrial and aquatic—that are in some cases changing the landscape to an almost unimaginable degree. Accompanying text describes the plant’s environmental and economic impacts as well as management techniques used to control it. Also included is an explanation of what an invasive is and a step-by-step identification key. Used by U.S. Forest Service botanists, this is an essential guide to understanding this unprecedented environmental challenge that is threatening biodiversity—and the human population that depends on it to survive.

“A colorful, general field guide to the major invasive plants of North America…packed with relevant information.” —
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

“A wonderful guide.” —

My COVID-induced hobby has been to volunteer with groups eradicating invasive plants in public parks. I bought this book after searching Google semi-successfully. But guess what -- Google doesn't work where there's no phone signal!

First, this book has the same high-quality heft as my Audubon bird guide. In addition to great pictures and descriptions, the book also explains how/when the invasive plant was introduced, what it does to the natural environment, how it spreads, and how best to fight it.

I will warn you -- invasives are everywhere, and the more you learn the more you'll look differently at the plants growing "wild" around you. It can feel daunting and intimidating.

    I highly recommend this guidebook!

This book is the most complete treatment of this subject that I have encountered. The pictures are very good and the text covers most of the information that one needs about this important topic including how to eradicate so many of these plants.
So many exotic invasive plants have taken over the habitat of more desirable native plants in our environment. The public needs to know when undesirable species are getting a stronghold in an area so that measures can be taken to eliminate them.

For several years I watched the massive thick and tall honeysuckles that formed a "living fence" at the end of my backyard. They struck me as playing a beneficial role for birds and bees. Finally I discovered that this invasive honeysuckle apparently has very little nutritional value for birds or bees. This book helped me recognize the value of eliminating invasive species and replacing them with native plants like the one that existed when our founders landed on this continent. I am still learning and slowly replacing invasive plants that have severely injured our native plants and diverse animal species. There are at least two species of nature honeysuckles that meet the needs of our native bees, butterflies, and birds. The challenge is massive but recent scientific evidence overwhelmingly shows the need and ways to restore our rich native plants and the balance of nature.

This is an awesome reference book for identifying and dealing with invasive plants. I also like how the history of the plant and it's introduction into North America is covered.

The pictures are very clear and helpful in determining what invasive species live in my outdoor space. Identifying and removing these first provides a great jumping off point for overhauling my outdoor space to a native plant landscape.
