The Yellowstone Kelly Novels: Yellowstone Kelly, Kelly Blue, Imperial Kelly, and Kelly and the Three-Toed Horse Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 135 ratings

Four fast-paced novels based on the real-life frontier adventures of Yellowstone Kelly, one of the Old West’s most legendary soldiers.

Luther “Yellowstone” Kelly had one of the longest, strangest, and most breathtaking careers in the American West. The intrepid scout’s talent for being in the right place at an exciting time would take him all over the world, from the Great Plains to Africa to the Philippines to Cuba.

Throughout his adventures, Kelly maintained a stoic outlook, a fierce wit, and a talent for survival that got him out of more than a few dangerous scrapes.

From hunting wolves with the Nez Percé to encounters with Jim Bridger and Brigham Young to a stint with the Rough Riders, in these four novels Yellowstone carves an exciting, hilarious, and unforgettable path through the Old West—maintaining his trademark humor and fortitude, always finding his way through even the stickiest mess.

About the Author

Peter Bowen (b. 1945) is an author best known for mystery novels set in the modern American West. When he was ten, Bowen’s family moved to Bozeman, Montana, where a paper route introduced him to the grizzled old cowboys who frequented a bar called The Oaks. Listening to their stories, some of which stretched back to the 1870s, Bowen found inspiration for his later fiction.

Following time at the University of Michigan and the University of Montana, Bowen published his first novel,
Yellowstone Kelly, in 1987. After two more novels featuring the real-life Western hero, Bowen published Coyote Wind (1994), which introduced Gabriel Du Pré, a mixed-race lawman living in fictional Toussaint, Montana. Bowen has written fourteen novels in the series, in which Du Pré gets tangled up in everything from cold-blooded murder to the hunt for rare fossils. Bowen continues to live and write in Livingston, Montana.

I am delighted with this series, and can happily encourage friends and family to take it on. There is scarcely a chapter without a good chuckle, but the life and times covered are also appropriately realistic, and it is a story not to be put aside until you find a true stopping place. I wanted to read these stories before I watched the TV series, and just the reading of this first one may make the idea of TV redundant. But maybe not - Kevin Costner...
'Yellowstone Kelly' #1 The American battles with our natives are at times very frank, as are those from Africa, but it is what it is. I must admit I didn't see the similarities between the battle of natives vs. invaders around the world in such frank terms until now. With several American natives in my family history, my sympathies were already very much set, but Kelly sure makes it easier to get riled up about it. This is a series I can highly recommend to friends and family. It's our history, like it or not. Reviewed on November 24, 2024, at Goodreads, AmazonSmile, B&N, BookBub, and Kobo.
'Kelly Blue' is #2, but I almost wish I had read this one first - we have this youngster as he begins his foray into the raw American West, and go with him through the learning curve that prepares him for his Yellowstone days. Not a wasted word, folks. I am delighted with this series, and can happily encourage friends and family to take it on. There is scarcely a chapter without a good chuckle, but the life and times covered are also appropriately realistic, and it is a story not to be put aside until you find a true stopping place.

In 'Imperial Kelly', Book #3, we have US Army Major Kelly, as he does his best to assist in the Spanish-American War with Roosevelt and his Rough Riders, and rubs shoulders with Butch and Sundance and other Western heroes over time. Then, It is a remembered hunk of jade, spied in a SouthWestern canyon, that will lead him across the Pacific, and he will view the fringes of the Boer War. While sailing to southern Africa, he runs into a very young Winston Churchill in Mozambique. He is involved in observing battles with inIgorote tribesmen, confirming his earlier observations and sympathies concerning the fate of native citizens overrun by 'civilization'. An excellent addition to the Yellowstone Kelly Legend - not to be missed, folks. REVIEWED on November 26, 2024, at Goodreads, AmazonSmile, B&N, BookBub, and Kobo.
'Kelly and the Three-Toed Horse' #4 We spend most of our time at dig sites across the west with various archeologists and lady Alys - as Kelly and friends muddle along with her from place to place and try to keep everyone safe. I thoroughly enjoyed Uncle Digby and our Arab friends, as well as visits with new Italian and old Yellowstone pals. I was not ready for the series to end.
Though Kelly's ladies appear serially throughout this series, I enjoyed them all - and appreciated the respect and care they were shown. Indian life was much as told me by my maternal grandmother (Tina Velma Goddard Ketner), whose own mother (Mary Ellen Barron Goddard) was Cherokee, born 26 March 1877 on the reservation at De Kalb, Georgia, USA. She died of TB in Roswell in 1017. My grandmother, born in 1905 in Alabama, was for much of her life a New Mexico resident until her death in 1004and her stories of her mother and many sibling's lives were well told and never-ending. This visit through the West with Kelly was just what I needed to celebrate my own 76th birthday. Thank you Peter Bowen, for bringing us into life in the 1870s so thoroughly. The stories really flow with lots of action & are very humorous when someone's not getting maimed, scalped & killed. At times, author gets to repeating himself though. But reading a bunch of these books back to back that would be expected. A real undercurrent of a dislike of politicians, government, lawyers, the very rich & entitled which most readers may relate to. The characters are many and fleshed out, both the likable & the not so likable one's. Good reads!

Uproarious and Ribald humor in the old west. Mr. Bowen spins great tales using his Yellowstone Kelly character throughout the mid 1800 on to the early 1900.. I thoroughly enjoyed the escapades and Rahm by humor.
The author does a service to the use of the English language creating a wide variety of new and useful insults.
Great fun and humor throughout the four books. Thank you Mr.Bowen I thoroughly enjoyed the journey.

weaves fact with fiction to provide an often humorous look at the worlds events
Through Kelly we see the mood of the country. His portrayal of presidents and
military figures is both funny and sarcastic.
Great showcase for the events spanning the 1860s thru the early 1900s
