SEPT 2018 UPDATE: Since the time Good Food, Great Business was published, a lot has changed in the specialty food industry. "Thanks for putting out your book! It's been such a help to us so far. " "Thank you for your wonderful book. Providing great inspiration and a kick in my butt to get moving on my project. " "I love your book and plan to use the templates to help me think through the steps. Step by step checklists are helpful for me, and learning from someone who is experienced what common pitfalls in thinking or actions to watch for. I have learned I am a dreamer ( a good thing) but tend to gloss over the practical stuff that is not as fun :) but really want to start/grow this biz the right way. Thanks for your help!!"More comments on foodstarter.com under the Books menu.

I voraciously ate up this book in a few days and got started on my marketing, distribution, and fundraising plan with help from her website and templates. What you will absolutely love and benefit from are the chapter summaries with checklists on what you need to STOP and do right then and there. This type of ideation and critical thinking at crucial chapter 'gates' will help you get a clearer picture and road map to ultimately following your food business dream!

This book is targeted to those wanting to start a packaged food business (e.g., products sold in grocery stores or online). It is not targeted to those wanting to start a restaurant or food truck.

The content of this book does not include fads or things that will be changing in the near future - rather it consists of the bare bones fundamentals a packaged food entrepreneur should be thinking about. As a result, the content will be as relevant in 2030 as it was when it was published.

Susie's book has been a godsend to me. I'm in the midst of starting a packaged food business (in November 2022), and this book gave me a very clear idea of what I need to be thinking about and doing to be successful, from ingredients and FDA requirements to distributors, copackers, and branding. I lack a background in all parts of the food industry, but this book gave me the information I need to know to see what's coming, and has showed me where my gaps are and what I need to be learning more about.

She explains each concept nicely, offers helpful advice, and provides snippets of real experience from people/brands she has worked with to better illustrate the discussion. The entire book is laid out in an easily reference-able format, and important information is bolded to catch your attention. I highly recommend this book to anyone starting a packaged food business!

While I buy on Amazon virtually everyday, I rarely if ever give product reviews. However after I ordered Susie Wyshak's "Good Food Great Business" on a whim Friday Night, I received it Monday afternoon. Now nearly 24 hours later, I've read and highlighted every single page. It will sound overstated and cliche, but this book is an absolute game-changer. There is no other way to describe it....

Unlike many of the inspirational stories in this book, I actually have spent the past 8 years since graduating from Penn State working in the snack food corporate world. I found it refreshing and inspiring to see that there are so many success stories for those that had virtually no food experience at all before starting their adventure. My perspective is different - primarily because up to 1/1/15, I was the Director, Business Transformation and Strategic Initiatives for the largest privately held snack company in the United States. After 8 years, I had decided to leave the corporate snack world to pursue my dream of providing organic snacks and nutrition education to children across the world. Now 45 days into this voyage, we have been making great progress BUT yesterday we received the map for our journey. I had never heard of Ms. Wyshak before yesterday but I promise I'll never forget her. Thank you so much for this exceptional book of knowledge. It has a great mix of information that I could easily relate to my time at that large privately held company and also to what I've been encountering over the past 45 days. My only regret is that I did not order this book 45 days sooner! This isn't a paid advertisement and I dont know the author...if you are starting a food business...buy this book now...its worth so much more than every penny!

This book was incredibly helpful when starting my food business. I relied on it heavily. I only wish it went into more detail about obtaining a business license and handling the finances/accounting/taxes aspect. I'm figuring that out on my own and a little guidance would have been incredibly helpful. Otherwise, this book is great.

I've been reading Good Food, Great Business for months now. I say months not because it's a tome, but because it's jam-packed with actionable content and after my first read, most of the book was dog-eared for me to revisit with action steps. This is a fantastic, task-based education that is perfect for new food startups (and probably a few older ones who are in a stalemate and need a boost.). I've gotten tactical advice and clarity, but more importantly, I've also been given a trail of breadcrumbs to lead us down the next steps. Because of this book, I'm now following the rabbit hole down and learning things on different websites (Susie is a writer for The Balance as well). I know from my previous successes in other businesses that I don't know what I don't know, so giving your startup space to wander around for a bit is critical to finding out what you didn't know you needed to find. Susie gave me the trails and that alone is worth the price of this book.

Susie Wyshak’s book provides invaluable insight to food entrepreneurs seeking to navigate the myriad considerations necessary for launching a successful food business. Her knowledge of entrepreneurs who have created steady businesses that generate great products and income, as well as personal fulfillment, is inspiring. The book is filled with detailed profiles of people who have gone through the often complicated process of conceiving and successfully achieving their dreams. The book also helpfully identifies pitfalls to be avoided. The practical necessities of business plans, customer identification, marketing, packaging, wholesale versus retail sales, equipment procurement, cottage industry kitchens versus commercial kitchens, how to select and hire a co-packer, whether and when to buy UPC codes, are just a few of the many relevant business considerations that are discussed in full. As for the reading, it’s as engaging as it is informative. From a literary standpoint, the format of the book, which is replete with interesting sidebars and takeaways, is highly digestible and accommodates both long and short reading sessions. As a comprehensive resource, it has been a huge timesaver, as well as a strategic guide, for the endeavor I want to pursue. Enjoy!

Awesome book for entrepreneurs that are looking to launch a product within the food industry. In my opinion, the book covers all crucial elements to cover in order to build a sustainable business. Especially great for people that are not business oriented. As a marketing expert, some part was less relevant for me, but still awesome overall!

Strongly recommend!
