This was and still is the worst book I've ever read

- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2019I bought this book because I read it as a child. I read every horror story I could find when i was a kid.
I remembered that it was one of the few books that gave me a real frisson. I also remembered it was peopled with characters that even as an 8 year old i found annoying.
As an adult i found the characters even more annoying. You'll feel your teeth begin to rot with the sweetness of the kids.
You'll just want to swat the adult characters with a rolled-up magazine and find yourself rooting for the ghost.
But in the end, it is just a ghost story. And as a ghost story, its excellent. I would rate it among the top 10 ghost stories of the last Century. That opinion might be shared by no one else, but its shaped by my experience with the book. If you know a weird 8 year old, you could bring that child a chilling joy by buying a copy of this and giving it as a Halloween present .
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2008I loved this story.
I started my fanfare with Clare McNally a
few months ago when I ran across one of her books
at our local good will (blood relations). I had it
read in just a few days and now can't seem to get
enough of her works.
This story is well written and kept me at it until I
was done in less than 3 days. If you want to sink into a
good book and lose yourself in some me time this is the ticket.
My only suggestion is that if like me you are one of those
ok what happens next readers buy the sequel because it picks up
just a few months later where the story leaves off and you will
want to get right into it.
KUDO's to Clare Mcnally ... I can't believe it took me all these years to learn of her work.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2013I read this book many years ago,but had forgotten.I did enjoy it this time also but I believe I enjoyed it more in my 20s than now.Parts of the story are so unbelievable you have to shake your head and wonder are their really people who would do that. When the husband almost is killed and he still does not think the house is haunted!REALLY! By the time the old lady comes to warn them they have already had quite a few things happen and still don`t believe her!All in all a good read but not very realistic.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2013In McNally's horror novel, the beautiful mansion seemed the perfect home for the Van Burens and their young family. At first the Van Burens believed there had to be logical explanations for the things that were happening. Before all was said and done, they were fighting for the lives of their children against an evil determined to destroy them all.
Scary at times and a worthwhile read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2016This was a pretty good ghost story. It starts out a little slow, but then it picks up speed around chapter 7. This book had lots of twists and turns. The house has a mean-spirited ghost that makes its presence known to the mother and children - the father stays in denial through most of the book, but finally he realizes that there is such a thing as "ghosts". The story starts moving at a faster pace and the last 8 chapters of the book, I stayed up to the early morning hours to finish reading it. (Note: there is a sequel to this novel called "Ghost House Revenge" - I am looking forward to reading the second one).
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2020I 1st read this book in high school & fell in love with it. The author Claire McNally writes very descriptively to the point I actually felt like I was in the story. When I would stop reading it would take me a minute to get back to reality. I have been looking for this book since high school, so happy I finally found it so I could have a copy of my own.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2019I read this book years ago during in 1980, the first printing and was horrified to see how awful it was - the characters were plastic, the plot thinner than a Saltine and the prose, embarrassingly infantile. The ending was ridiculous. I forced myself to read it because at the time I was fledgling writer and felt I had to read books that I thought were lousy as well as books I thought were good reads. This was definitely not a good read. The scariest thing about this book was that years later I was looking through the paperback selection in Walmart and found that they had actually published a sequel. I can't believe the positive reviews this book has gotten here, but as always, there's no accounting for taste. I wish Amazon provided a way to give books like this less than one whole star. I'd offer maybe an eighth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jacob Armand - the Ghost with the Most!
"Ghost House" had a beautiful balance of thrills and twists with a well-executed plot that thoroughly kept my attention. Clare McNally presents the love-story haunting as the ghost affected each family which inhabited the home, cleverly weaving the experiences into a brilliant narrative. This ghost story, unlike most, includes the rationale behind the haunting so everything is clear to the reader!
I grew tired of the saccharine Van Buren family at the novel's end and found myself rooting for the evil spirit, slightly disappointed with the happy ending - but then the author had one more trick up her sleeve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally Clare Mcnally's Books Are Available For The Kindle....
I read Ghost House years ago and loved it. I was thrilled to find that some of Clare's books are now available for the kindle and had no hesitation in buying them as I remembered how much I had enjoyed reading them the first time around.
When Gary and Melaine move into their new home with their children they are in the process of the trying to rebuild their marriage after Gary discovers that Melaine had an affair.
Their new home isn't the fresh start they were hoping for as strange things begin to occur the minute they move in. Neither one of them believe in ghosts but as strange things happen they begin to fear for their lives....
A really book which I enjoyed. I hope more of Clare's books if not all of them are released for the kindle. Some of them I have never read before as they were out of print and hard to get hold of back when I first started reading her books.
I am now off to read more of her books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ghost House - A True Classic
I remember first reading this when I was a teenager. Absolutely loved it, and I couldn't put it down.
Now nearing 30, I decided to read this again, and can still say it's a very good read.
It's one of the best haunted house stories I've had the privilege to read, and it's sequel, Ghost House Revenge, is just as good, if not better.
If you like haunted house stories with plenty of murder, mystery and suspense, buy this and it's sequel, you won't be disappointed! :D
