Two women from different walks of life must join together to solve a mystery in Middlebury’s Amish Artisan Village.

Spring has arrived in Middlebury, Indiana, and Amber Wright is optimistic about the growing profit from her collection of Amish shops—until she receives a call that Ethan Gray is dead. Hurrying over to A Simple Blend, she finds a solitary hole in the front window and the store manager lying next to the espresso machine, dead from an apparent heart attack. All the money is still in his register.

When Amber hires a young Amish woman, Hannah Troyer, to take over the shop’s duties, the two women become fast friends—as well as amateur sleuths. The police believe Gray’s death is a by-product of vandalism, but Amber and Hannah aren't convinced.

Clues that don't add up, a neighbor who is pulled into the midst of the investigation, a town with secrets to hide, and a blossoming romance—all will combine to push Amber and Hannah into unfamiliar roles in order to reveal answers to the mysteries around them.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Chapman’s latest is a mix of mystery and romance with vivid characters, a realistic setting and themes of loss, trust and love. The puzzle pieces are revealed slowly so readers can piece the clues together themselves up until the shocking conclusion. A glossary and discussion questions are included.” -- Romantic Times, four-star review

'Vannetta Chapman keeps the action suspenseful, and the who-done-it mostly unpredictable as her Amish and English characters work together to solve the mystery. Out of even such dreadful circumstances come moments of grace: between Amber and her Amish employee Hannah and between Amber and Tate, who had each given up on love.” -- BookPage

Murder Simply Brewed by Vannetta Chapman is a delightful Amish cozy mystery. It is the first book in the Amish Village Mystery series. Amber Wright is the manager of the Amish Artisan Village in Middlebury, Indiana. She lives in a Dawdy Haus (a small house for grandparents or that the parents move into when they pass the property/house on to a son or daughter) on the property with her cat, Leo.

At the beginning of a new day she gets a call that Ethan Gray, manager of A Simple Blend, has been found dead in the shop. The windows were also shot with a BB gun. It is ruled a heart attack, but Amber has a feeling that there is more to it than meets the eye! She receives a call at the end of the day of a threatening message left on a trail near the property line. Tate Bowman, who owns a farm adjacent to the Amish Artisan Village, spotted the message. It is written in red paint. Unfortunately, this is just the beginning.

Hannah Troyer is twenty-two and has been working at Quilting Bee. Amber asks her to take over A Simple Blend. Amber and Hannah start talking about Ethan’s death and the damage being done around The Village. Hannah talks things over with her friend, Jesse Miller. Jesse works on the grounds crew in The Village. They keep looking for clues to help solve the crimes.

After a threat at Amber’s home, Tate starts keeping a closer eye. Amber and Tate also get to know each other better. Tate lost his wife four years ago and has never been a fan of The Village. But, as he gets to know Amber, he sees things a little differently. Tate, Amber, Hannah, and Jesse work to see who is behind the threats and damage to The Village. Amber also thinks that Ethan was murdered and hopes to find proof.

I give Murder Simply Brewed 5 out of 5 stars. Enjoyable and relatable characters, interesting setting, well-written, and an entertaining mystery. I have wanted to read this book since it came out, but I have not had the opportunity. I finally pushed it to the top of my list and I am very glad. I cannot wait to read the next book in this engaging series.

Vannetta Chapman is an excellent writer. As with her Shipsewana Amish Mystery series, this book has a great sense of place and the characters are well drawn. We're even given insight into the less likeable characters, to help put their behaviours in context. This book is well-paced and I found it hard to stop reading when things like having to cook dinner intruded.

The murder occurs at the beginning of the book and the story builds out from there. There are two romances that blossom along the way and while I'm very much a fan of murder mysteries but not so much of romances, the romances worked well with the storyline.

My only minor criticism of this book is that it isn't what I expected. The tone is very different from the author's Shipsewana series, which centred on the warm and supportive friendships between the main characters. With each book we came to know the women in that friendship group better. I really hope that there will be another instalment in that series because I'd love to know how things work out with the women.

That this book is something of a departure in style from her previous series but is still excellent reading is testament to the skill of the author.

Murder Simply Brewed by Vannetta Chapman is book 1 in the Amish Village Mystery Series.
If you want a little break from the typical Amish Christian Romance book but still want to hold true to that form of style then this book is for you. Vannetta Chapman has made mystery a whole lot of fun in this book. Amber Wright is a middle aged Engligh woman living by herself in a small Dawdi house on the grounds of the Amish Artisian Village which she happens to manage, she loves her home, job and her life.
Hannah Troyer is a young Amish woman who works at the Quilting Bee in the Village and she could not think of anything she would like better, well maybe being home with her family and community.
Then one day all that changed when Hannah found poor Ethan Gray's body at the Simply Blend Coffee Shop when she went over there after she opened the Quilting Bee and realized she did not smell coffee brewing, so she thought it strange. Now Amber and Hannah are becoming fast friends as they work to solve this mystery into Ethan's death, and they realize the police think it's natural causes but that is not sitting right with Amber and Hannah.
After several more stranger things happen in the village Hannah talks to her best friend and co worker Jesse who helps her work through the her feelings, Amber also has Tate her neighbor who has never been close to her instead he has kinda been a pain in her side however now that he has reached out to her after one the the problems at the village they find themselves working together.
Can this un likely group of friends solve this for poor Ethan of will they find out that it really was just a Heart Attack like the police think it was. Will they find a little romance along the way as well?
This is a wonderful break from the typical Amish Christian Romance while at the same time it still holds true to the faith, and a little romance we all love in these books. I'm sure you will enjoy this book as I did and I'm looking forward to book 2 in this series Murder Tightly Knit.

Vannetta Chapman is one of my favorite authors, and her newest, "Murder Simply Brewed" did not disappoint. I always appreciate how Vannetta doesn't place her Amish characters into the "normal" circumstances as we readers imagine that genre. Instead, her stories are contemporary and vibrant, combining suspense, love, Amish and so much more into a world that just sucks you into the midst of all that is happening.
In "Brewed", we meet Hannah and Jesse, and Amber and Tate, along with several other people that live near an "Amish Artisan Village". If you've been in any commercial Amish area, you can just picture the setting and how it mixes real and imaginary scenarios into a tourist attraction that benefits the Amish and the tourist.
I recommend the book to any and all who enjoy a "clean" read with some intrigue!

This book combined my interst in mysteries and in the Amish. Great characters and an interesting murder mystery. Just like I like it without a lot of blood and gore. Reality can be too brutal I prefer it light where the mystery is more of a puzzle to solve. I have read several books by Chapman and can heartily recommend them all.
