A Tour of the Arnhem Battlefields: 17-26 September 1944 Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 76 ratings

Although the Battle of Arnhem was fought over sixty years ago. It still evokes such interest that it would seem to rank with the great victories of Agincourt, Trafalgar, Waterloo and the Battle of Britain, all of which proved to be turning points in the history of our nation. Arnhem was not a victory, but its outcome may have had results equally vital to the more recent history of the world. To many people the Battle of Arnhem was the Battle of Arnhem Bridge, which has now passed into history as "The Bridge Too Far". This is understandable, for the bridge was the main objective of the 1st British Airborne Division. The north end was captured and held for three days, thus denying its use to the Germans, which proved crucial to the success gained by the rest of Operation Market Garden. As a battle guide this book leaves nothing out, illustrated with maps and photographs, the author takes the reader through the battle with extensive use of first hand accounts.

If planning a tour of the Arnhem battlefield, this is a great little book to carry along. Excellent photo's/maps and diagrams. Points of interest as well as soldiers stories are included. Excellent all-round book on the Battle as well. Packed with great information. A must add for anyone interested in the Battle of Arnhem......

The book does NOT have detailed maps--just one general map which is almost worthless for driving. It gives locations by UTM grid coordinates, NOT by latitude and longitude: to use it, you need a hiking GPS, and who wants to lug that to Europe?

All detailed sites are in Arnhem or just across the river at the Polish battlefield--nothing down the corridor of the American landings.

I carried it to Arnhem and found it pretty worthless...

5.0 out of 5 stars Read Where we are going

This book deals with the Arnhem part of the famous, if tragic WW2 'Market' September 1944 operation.
Where the parachute, glider borne troops were dropped, where they fought and died, maps, text?
An ideal pocket, glove box size item, and a good read.

My father in law plans to visit Arnhem, so we bought him this book. Having had a few weeks to read it, he says it is factually accurate, ease to follow and light weight to carry on the trip.

Yes, I was pleased with this . It was a gift for my husband and he was very pleased. Since we are soon to visit Arnhem battle fields - I think this book will be a great resource.
