A Business of Some Heat: The United Nations Force in Cyprus Before and During the 1974 Turkish Invasion Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 23 ratings

The island of Cyprus, long troubled by inter-communal strife, exploded onto the world stage with the Athens-inspired coup against President Makarios and Turkey's invasion that followed. This resulted in the partition of the Island, which was policed by UNFICYP under the most testing conditions. These dramatic events are described here for the first time in this book which examines the political and military background, the Greek and Turkish forces and the make-up and operations of the multi-national UN Force. The difficult situation was further complicated by the Yom Kippur War and the rapid despatch of a significant part of UNFICYP to Egypt.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Toothless UN in Cyprus
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 8, 2008
An excellent book but it defines that had the Turkish military wanted they could have gone through the island until the UK military based there had stopped them.

It shows really that the UN in Cyprus are simply a token force with no powers at all. It is a holiday for whoever serves there under the UN flag and wearing a Blue beret.

I know as I was there upto and after the war for almost 6 years working and socialising with the UN when working for the MOD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Facts on UN in Cyprus

An excellent book which gives the day to day facts of the organisation, it’s tasks and how it keeps the two communities apart. This book shows how the SBAs support the UN was without their backup the UN would have major problems trying to keep non professional soldiers supplied.

4.0 out of 5 stars Long Winded

Obviously factually correct but tends to be a bit long winded.
I served in UNFICYP Jun - Dec 1974 and enjoyed being taken back to those days.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'must read' for those interested in the Cyprus Problem
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 17, 2017
Having recently served in the UN Force in Cyprus I can say this is the best book on the events of 1974 that I've come across. It also provides an excellent history and background into the 'Cyprus Problem' as its known, as well as an insight into peacekeeping more generally.
