- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2022A very good book about Bomber Command Aircrews.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2014The men that flew those big bombers were awesome! It took an awful lot of fire power to knock them to the ground! I don't see how they were able to keep them in the air at times. The gunners were relentless! A good presentation of how things really were and how those brave men reacted. A good read!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2010Allied loss statistics reveal that Bomber Command squadrons, especially in the 1943-44 period, were dangerous units to be assigned to. German flak and nightfighters took a horrendous toll of RAF aircrews flying Stirlings, Halifaxes, Lancasters and assorted aircraft, losses that undoubtedly left surviving crews wondering when they would "get the chop." First-person reminiscences from some of those brave airmen form the backbone of Bruce Halpenny's fascinating BOMBER AIRCREW IN WORLD WAR II, a 2004 Pen & Sword Books release.
In point of fact, BOMBER AIRCREW IN WORLD WAR II is a straightforward reprint of Halpenny's TO SHATTER THE SKY, originally published in 1984. After an informative history of the development of bomber airfields in England from 1914 to 1945, Halpenny presents 20-odd accounts from Bomber Command pilots, navigators, bomb-aimers, wireless operators, gunners and ground crewmen who relate their sometimes terrifying experiences. The book's final section reproduces the 23 Victoria Cross citations awarded to Bomber Command crewmen, 13 of which were posthumous!
The accounts reflect a wide variety of experiences - early bombing ops in a Wellington, crews "pressing on" to the target in a critically damaged aircraft with seriously wounded crewmates onboard, fatal encounters with Luftwaffe nightfighters, routine training flights that went horribly wrong, the disastrous 30/31 March 1944 Nuremberg raid, shuttle raids to Italian targets, special duty ops, etc. Even when describing "at death's doorstep" situations, it's remarkable how these men relate their experiences in an understated fashion!
The book is illustrated with a nice selection of photographs of Bomber Command aircrew, aircraft, bombs, squadron life scenes, views of crash sites, etc.
Anyone looking for a word-and-picture account of Bomber Command aircrew at war should latch on to BOMBER AIR CREW IN WORLD WAR II. It's an excellent, well-ilustrated and sometimes poignant look at the RAF's night war over Germany. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing stories from bomber crew during WW2
Many amazing stories and a moving section on those awarded the highest honour for valour during WW2. Plenty to keep you interested and with few of these heroes left, a great tribute to them and their bravery in a turbulent time.
