Editorial Reviews

Review

"...rigorous scholarship, accessible structure and some truly engaging prose."
Military Illustrated

"For those who subscribe to the Haig was an incompetent butcher opinion, this book will perhaps open minds and bring the realities of Haig’s situation into focus… will assist any battle guide or researcher seeking to give color to the men behind the reputations."
Mike McCarthy, Western Front Association

brief expose of each of the Army generals during WII. I felt it was a bit soft on its treatment of some fairly awful decisions made by these men. I thought it was a bit of a cover up.

    Excellent book!
Too many criticise the Generals from a position of complete ignorance.
This book reveals soldiers who made it to high rank facing great difficulties allowing us to see how they reacted and both their good and bad points are shown. These men were far more efficient than the popular press has allowed us to know.

Actually this is a very interesting book which I haven't yet read. However, it contains a defamatory essay about my grandfather so I'm not enamoured with the book as a whole. But I'm going to read it for precisely that reason.
