100 Group (Bomber Support): RAF Bomber Command in World War II (Aviation Heritage Trail) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 21 ratings

A history of the British RAF division in Norfolk dedicated to radio countermeasures during WWII.

As part of the AHT series, the airfields and interest in this book are concentrated in a particular area—in this case Norfolk. The growing importance of the ‘electronic war’ in the air in 1943 caused the creation of 100 Group to fly both defensive and offensive sorties employing highly secret Radio Counter Measure equipment. The Group flew from airfields at Foulsham, Great Massingham, Little Snoring, North Creake, Swannington, and West Raynham. The aircraft flown were Halifax, Beaufighter, Mosquito, and Fortress. The Group included RAF Squadron numbers 192, 169, 23, 171, 199, 214, 157, 85, 141 and 239.

100 Group (Bomber Support) looks at the history and personalities associated with each base, and what remains today, exploring the favorite local wartime haunts where aircrew and ground crew would have sought well-deserved entertainment and relaxation. Other museums and places that are relevant will also be described and general directions on how to get them included.

It is wonderful to finally find a book written about 100 Group. My father's plane was named 'A Virgin's Prayer'. He wrote in his diary about the downing of their plane and his survival. It would have been a great story to add to this book. I have really enjoyed reading the book and understanding more about their work

This book is another excellent read from one of the best RAF historians out there. Bowman visits the current locations of the various 100 Group station and his WW 2 descriptions are contrasted with how things look now. Very well done.

My late uncle was assigned to squadron 169 which was in 100 group and this book had information about the airfield
he was flying from at the time of his death.

This was a gift and my husband can't put this book down. He is the type that will read it over 3 and find things that he missed. Highly recommend this book

As Secretary of the worldwide RAF No.100 Group, a secret Group during the war which identified and jammed enemy radar, this is a superb book I would recommend to anyone wishing to understand and know more. I am of course author of 20 books myself, some of which relate to WWII and this secret group ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good account of the history of 100 Group and its bases.

I liked that it gave a good overview of what 100 Group did and the diverse units that were part of it including USAAF units which were unusual to find in an RAF grouping. The placing of the different squadrons and their bases was also very good. I would have liked to see more detail on the Operations but I suspect that would fill several volumes.

3.0 out of 5 stars A useful book about 100 group

The history of 100 group is assembled in a cool reference style that left me wanting more detail and depth with exemplar material of a few specific tasks undertaken by Hundred Group. However incorrect my opinion may be, it felt like budget and fact were watchwords rather than enthusiasm for the people and events of the history that is fast receding into a forgotten and easily confused past.
The book reads well enough but I slid into 'dip into' rather than 'cover to cover' reading.
