Boesinghe (Battleground Ypres) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

In the aftermath of the War, the war-ravaged countryside was restored and the trenches of the Western Front were filled in. 75 years after the War a group of Belgians, known as the Diggers, excavated a classic trench system at Boesinghe, discovering many artifacts as well as remains of the Fallen. One section has been preserved. Boesinghe is a canal village and the opposing sides continually bombarded each other across the wide Yser canal. In the opening phases of the Second battle of Ypres, the Germans used gas ; despite this, the British flank held. Late in the summer of 1917 the Allies launched the Third battle of Ypres and the Guards Division spearheaded the crossing of the canal. They attained their planned objectives but at great cost. The many military cemeteries in the area are poignant reminders of the cost of war even in what some regarded as a quiet sector.

Review

"Stephen McGreal has done a fine job of compilation of the stories, maps and images that make the 'Battleground Europe' series what they are, and 'Boesinghe' would be a fine buy for anyone wishing to understand more about and visit this part of the Western Front."

5.0 out of 5 stars At last!

I have wondered why no-one has written a book to cover the area around Boesinghe during the Great War, and was very pleased to see that Pen & Sword have finally released this Battleground Europe guide, so immediately placed my order with Amazon.
Upon receiving my spanking new book, I was very happy to find that Stephen McGreal has done an excellent job in chronicling the history of the fighting in the area around Boesinghe. The area is of particular interest to myself, as I'm interested in the actions of the 38th (Welsh) Division who held the line here for over twelve months at the height of the war.
I have dragged my family around the Ypres battlefields several times, and know it pretty well, but I'll certainly bring this book with me next time we visit, and I can at last locate place names associated with the occupation of the 38th (Welsh) Division during their time there, and at the Battle of the Pilckem Ridge.
A welcome addition to the Battleground Europe series, and to my bookshelf!

A useful summary of the fighting around Boesinghe at different stages of WW1. Until I actually visit the area I am not sure of the value of the tours it suggests.
