5.0 out of 5 stars Well researched and thoroughly absorbing.
Originally read to trace details of my grandfather who served with 26Bn 3rd Tyneside Irish NF. Well done to the author and his team.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Moving Story and Most Informative Book.......Well worth having in every military book collection. Cracking Stuff!
Fantastic insight into the formation of one of the North's Pals battalions for WW1.
Great production, great pics, some great stories of bravery, loss, humour, and gives a real feel for how the men felt about getting out of their sometimes poor quality of life, only to be brought down to earth by their experiences in the European battlefields and their wish for it all to be over.
One of the most useful and interesting books on the First War I have come across.
A relative of mine was killed in action with the Tyneside Irish and his name appears in the Roll of Honour.
A great read from Mr. Sheen.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a good research tool
Well written book and well researched from regimental diaries written at the time adding local newspaper reports and the Tommy's letters home. Of a similar ilk to John Sheen's book about the Durham Light Infantry. This is a good research tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is an extremely comprehensive account of the whole life of the 'Irish'. The little vignettes of private soldiers are quite moving. I have been trying to trace the life of my grandfather and this book (and JS the author) have proved invaluable.

5.0 out of 5 stars citizen soldiers
A great read, the detail and personal recollections really made it for me. The folk history of the North East is made richer by the work and the memory of the men of the Tyneside Irish is emblazoned on every page. Ordinary men, engaged in extraordinary deeds. It was an honour to read and remember.
