4.3 out of 5 stars 29 ratings

This massive work provides a comprehensive insight to the experiences of Bomber Commands pilots and aircrew throughout WWII. From the early wartime years when the RAFs first attempts to avenge Germanys onslaught were bedeviled by poor navigation and inaccurate bombing, to the last winning onslaught that finally tamed Hitler in his Berlin lair, these volumes trace the true experiences of the men who flew the bombers. Hundreds of firsthand accounts are punctuated by the authors background information that puts each narrative into wartime perspective. Every aspect of Bomber Command's operational duties are covered; day and night bombing, precision low-level strikes, mass raids and operations throughout all wartime theaters. Contributions are from RAF personnel who flew the Commands different aircraft from the early Blenheims and Stirlings to the later Lancasters and Mosquitoes. Each volume is full of accounts that tell of the camaraderie amongst the crews, moments of sheer terror and the stoic humor that provided the critical bond. The five volumes of this work provide the most vivid and comprehensive work on the outstanding part played by RAF Bomber Command and their vital role in the destruction of the Third Reich.

Martin W. Bowman's (RAF) Bomber Command books are a superbly researched and written series of volumes telling the story of the Royal Air Force's Bomber Command during World War II. Bowman recounts the development of Bomber Command from its' early twin engine Hampdens, Wellingtons, and Whitleys, through the introduction of the four-engined Sitrling, Halifaxes, and Lancasters. He counts the growing pains, the failures and successes, and ultimate triumph of RAF Bomber Command, along with its' American counterparts in the USAAF, in their epic battles to destroy the Luftwaffe and end World War II in Europe. Must reading for the serious student of the war that shaped the world we live in today.

This is the first volume of Martin Bowman's series detailing the story of Bomber Command during the 39-45 war. He draws on personal experiences of those who were there, both in the air and on the ground and tells the story in an informative and matter of fact style. Individual raids and acts of bravery and heroism are recounted in detail and the scale of the Command's losses and the personal stories certainly made this reader pause for thought and be thankful for the sacrifices and contibutions of the thousands of men and women who took part in this war-long battle for the skies. I've already bought Vol 2 and look forward to the other books in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but can be depressing

A well-researched work, well written and well presented.
The book includes many stories of the loss of an aircraft and details of the crew that died. Unfortunately these were not balanced by experiences of aircrew in "successful" operations, from which the aircraft returned safely, nor by experiences of members of Bomber Command apart from actual operations. The overall memory from this book is of a catalogue of death and suffering.
