The Germans in Flanders, 1914–1915 (Images of War) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

A pictorial history of the German occupation of Flanders in Belgium during the early years of World War I.

With photographs, captions, and text, this book follows the German Army’s presence in Flanders, from its arrival in September, 1914, until the summer of 1916. It examines the Kaiser’s Army’s battles with the French, Belgians, and British, concentrating mostly on the latter and the battles for Ypres (1st Ypres 1914 and 2nd Ypres 1915 and the gas attacks). The book features detailed text, around 250 photos, a timeline of events in Flanders, and a section on the German divisions that fought there. Also included is material from the home front.

Each phase and aspect of the period is described from the German point of view using primary and secondary sources from both Germany and Britain. The illustrations provide a view of life on the front-line as well as in rear areas. Most of the illustrations have never been published. As well as illustrating German troops in the area, it shows how the war changed the towns and villages. A second campaign volume covering the period from 1916 to 1918 will follow.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Another in the superb series of 'rare photographs from wartime archives', this time covering the Germans in Flanders at the start of the war as they fought the French, Belgians and British. Each phase and aspect is described from the German perspective. Using many images previously unpublished, the activities at the Front are complemented by images of life in the rear and on the home front. A well written account runs throughout and contains a chronology of events and information on the German Divisions engaged. It is our understanding that this is the first volume in a planned series of three. A very popular series. 10/10. Great War Magazine

This book was a treasure trove of information. It has a good amount of photos, but is not a photo book. I was particularly impressed with the authors treatment of the shootings of civilians. We have all seen allied propaganda which accused Germany of killing innocent people during the march into Belgium. I was able to interview a few remaining German vets in the 70's and they stated the same facts the book deals with. Civilians, under the rules of war, are forbidden to attack military personnel, doing so subjects you to legal reprisals. The civil population was aroused by priests and politicians to attack German soldiers by sniping. This in turn, caused a German reaction that executed these provocateurs according to the rules of war. Any nation would have done the same, and did the same. As with most propaganda, it's based on fact that is twisted to suit the accuser.

Mr Bilton's work and photos are top notch. Most all of the photos in the work are new to the public, and his indepth study of the first year of the Great War is seldom seen by the English language reader. A wonderfaul historical addition.

This book was a nice read. History of the German involvement in Flanders through 1915. More text than I originally would have thought, but well written nonetheless. I was expecting more of a "picture book" with large photos. The photos presented are a nice cross-section of the battle's progressions. Most are 1 1/2" x 2" or 2" x 3" in size. Some reprints of postcards from before the war to show how these villages looked before they were destroyed by artillery and combat. A nice touch was the histories of German units involved in the Battles. The last portion of the book contains strictly photographs with cutlines. A fun and enjoyable read, and interesting photos. I guess I just wish they were larger.
