British Army Uniforms from 1751 to 1783: Including the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence Kindle Edition
Based on records and paintings of the time, this book identifies each cavalry and infantry regiment and illustrates changes in uniforms, their facing colors, and the nature and shape of lace worn by officers, NCOs and private soldiers from 1751 to 1783. Regiments that served in the American War of Independence are noted and the book includes more than 200 full-color plates of uniforms and distinctions. Divided into four sections, it not only details the cavalry and infantry uniforms of the period but also the tartans of the Highland regiments, some of which were short-lived, and the distinction of the Guards regiments.
“A superb reference work, full of clearly researched details…it will be of value to family and military historians, re-enactors, figure painters, and wargamers.”—FGS Forum

Toy Solder & Model Figure
"This book will be of great use to anyone interested in the 18th Century British Army as well as illustrators and others who need detailed information in one convenient source."
Classic Arms and Militaria
“This excellent guide illustrates and identifies the different uniforms of the numbered regiments of cavalry and infantry within the British Army during 1751, 1768 and the end of the War of Independence in 1783… This is a superb reference work, full of clearly researched details. The color illustrations for every numbered regiment along with the explanatory text for regimental changes, plus the descriptions of how and why the equipment and uniforms were changing overall make this a go-to reference. For anyone interested in the British Army during the period from 1751 to 1783, this is a reference book worth owning. One look at this book shows how it leaves all other uniform books in the dust. Use this book to understand how a British military ancestor would have been dressed and equipped. As a reference resource it will be of value to family and military historians, re-enactors, figure painters, and wargamers.”

“…massively color illustrated literary horn of plenty… I can only hope that a second volume detailing 1784-1914 will be forthcoming!”

- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2013I purchased this book and found it money well spent. I think the negative evaluations say more about the reviewers than the book they are reviewing. We like to think of military history in absolutes -- it was this way. And yet frequently, the best we can do is provide a good representation of what may have been accurate on a given day. Have not found a book, any book, where I did not find a technical error. On the other hand, this book provides good information that is very useful. Do I really think it is a5-star production, maybe not. On the other hand the negatives reviews do not do it justice either. Like I said, have been very satisfied and am glad I purchased it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2021I have many books covering uniforms for this period. This is the best single volume reference that I have found. It includes descriptive text and detail drawing for specific equipment and clothing items, then goes regiment by regiment through the horse and foot units. Great color plates, including a pantone color guide for the facing/trim colors. A must-have for serious period modelers and historians.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2012I recieved te book today and I am pleased but ot thrilled. First I found a mistake just looking flipping the pages. The Marines were not a Royal Regiment until the 19th Century, this is not a mistake that anyone who knows their subject should make. Second some o the facing colors on the color plate are wrong based on orginal wool swatches. Now that could be a simple printing issue. Te goodis they do show details that I have never seen before. Te plates for the vaious Regiments are great and gove great information. The problem with the plates is that they make every Regiment look the same and that is simply not correct, but it is based on the 1768 warrat and is what they should have been. The book is worth getting for anyone interested in the subject

- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2014This book is well done with great color images. Good for the miniature painter or living history buff. This book would pair well with any Osprey book on British uniforms.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2017This is the most precise book on British uniforms I have seen.
The in depth breakdown of unit by unit uniforms is very detailed.
If you are looking for historical reference or modeling infantry as I am
of this time period. This is the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2021This review is on the Kindle edition.
This book would have merited five stars if not for dreadful proof-reading. To see this, and very clearly, look in the Glossary. Multiple entries, even on the first page, are run together. There are numerous examples of unclear language as well.
The illustrations are plentiful. They could be larger, but that is what two-finger pinching is for. As seen on the cover, uniforms are shown in schematic form, as in the Funckens' The Lace Wars. They are excellent.
The book seems to be a simple facsimile of the printed one. This leads to another irritation, in that the uniform and service details are often twenty of more pages from the plate to which they refer. This is because the details are provided in a block, with the main illustrations in another one. Not a great inconvenience in a printed book, where one can fold pages and compare one with the other. VERY inconvenient with a tablet, or even a PC.
The illustrations in the body of the text are exceedingly small indeed. Printed across single pages, they do not transfer well to the ebook. I have no choice but to pinch on my 10 inch Fire. This produces a blurred, but intelligible, image.
I have, despite my complaints here, no hesitation in recommending this book, But I would urge you to buy the print version. It will be much more useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reference work
A unique reference book which describes and compares the uniforms of British regiments of cavalry and infantry from 1751 to 1783. Well illustrated with full colour plates of of each regiment.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding title
First impressions are that this is the work to have on the uniforms of the British army of the second half of the 18th Century. Beautifully illustrated in full colour, and available for a very good price, it will be for me a frequently consulted reference work and a book to browse for pleasure. I am not qualified to assess the accuracy of the information and illustration given, but there are a couple of important niggles: the 19th Light Dragoons page is missing, replaced by the 21st (which is then repeated in its proper place. The illustrations for footwear for both infantry and cavalry are identical - unlikely to be so, surely? And there is the usual (these days) collection of irritating typos, largely due to computer text editing, which makes it very easy to turn sentences into nonsense by repeating or omitting prepositions, auxiliary verbs and the like. A book of this quality deserves better editing and proof-reading. Otherwise, superb.
