D-Day Normandy Landing Beaches (Major & Mrs Holt's Definitive Battlefield Guide) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 128 ratings

An extensive traveler’s guide to the French region’s World War II historical sites and everything else you need to know about the area.

Already the best-selling English-language guide to the area, universally known as “the Bible,” this is the sixth, completely revised, up-to-date, much expanded edition of the
Definitive Guide to the D-Day Normandy Landing Beaches.

The third in the Holts’ important series of Battlefield Guides (following the Somme and the Ypres Salient), it employs the same, highly acclaimed formula. Once again, the cold facts are interlaced with anecdotes of bravery, humor, sadness, and humanity. This new edition now contains all the landing beaches: Juno, Sword, Gold, Omaha, Utah; all the airborne operations: British and American two approach routes; six timed and measured itineraries; 21 in-text itinerary maps, battle maps & diagrams; and approximately 400 recommended sites within the D-Day planned area of advance, all with photos, each with latitude & longitude references (New for this Edition). It features over 400 colored pictures and 352 pages of memorials, museums, batteries, bunkers, landing fields, historical background to the landings, the plans and what actually happened, information about Allied and German war graves, veterans’ associations, and other commemorative associations. It also has Normandy tourist information about where to stay and to eat, and information about historical figures such as recipients of the Victoria Cross and the Medal of Honor, poets, photographers, and more.

From the Author

We are often asked - 'Why do you write your guide books?' The answer is that we believe that it is important to record the past and the endeavours that shape our today. Probably the two most important events of recent history are the two world wars and the part that our countrymen and allies played in them.As we conducted our tours around the battlefields it became clear that there was no central record of the memorials that chronicle the struggles of those that fought for our freedoms. We therefore decided that we would begin to record those memorials and events and the culmination of that effort over the last 30 years or so is our book on Normandy. We travelled every road (many times) went in every bunker and cemetery, visited every museum and in the course of our travels made many friends in Normandy. The book is held together by the personal stories of many veterans that we came to know over the years. It is their story. In view of the advances in modern technology we have included GPS locations for every stop that we suggest and have added a photo too. It took two years of work when we were unable to find time to write on anything except Normandy. Our first Normandy Guide was written over 20 years ago. This edition is the 6th.We hope that every reader will find something of value in our books but ultimately we believe that if we are to properly value the freedoms we have today we must know the price that has been paid for them.

I've just returned from a week in Normandy, touring many of the sites where the epic Normandy campaign took place in the summer of 1944. I've been to the area before, and I've read many books on the subject. My visits before have been rather broad brush, as part of tour groups quickly rushed through the usual suspects: Omaha and Utah Beaches, Pointe du Hoc, the American Military Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, Sainte-Mère-Église, Pegasus Bridge and Arromanche. Those are excellent places to visit, especially if your time is limited, but there are so many other places, some obscure and overlooked, that fill in your understanding. You need to walk the ground to really appreciate what happened. If you really want an indepth tour of the Normandy battlefields, you can hire a guide for several days and spend beaucoup bucks. That's an excellent way to do it, if you can afford it. Or you can get this terrific guidebook, along with a rental car, Google maps on your smart phone, an AA or Michelin map of Normandy, and follow the Holt's itineraries for the best Normandy experience you will ever have. I had gotten the Kindle version initially, but maps on a Kindle are worthless, so do yourself a favor and get the paperback version. If you're really serious about Normandy history, you can spend six days following the Holts' prepared itineraries. You'll put in nine or ten hours a day, and you'll get the most rewarding D-Day experience you can imagine. If your time is limited, you can choose the itinerary that best suits your interest: American airborne operations, British airborne and Pegasus Bridge, Omaha Beach area, Sword Beach and so on. There are numerous suggested extra visits, as well as recommended restaurants along the way. In addition, there are many personal stories from D-Day veterans. SATNAV coordinates are included for everything. You can pop those into your car's navigation system. In most cases I found if I just typed in La Fiere Bridge, Graignes battle, DeGlopper monument, and so on, the location was already in the Google Maps data base. I served as the tour guide for my wife, three brothers, my sister, and assorted in-laws for the week, using this book as my reference, and the gang absolutely raved about it. We're already planning another visit in 2021. Everyone wants more time in Normandy. I donated my marked up and annotated book to the library of the farmhouse we rented, so definitely I'll be getting another copy of this wonderful book. Major and Mrs. Holt's guide is the first thing that will be packed.

I purchased the Kindle version of this marvelous guide prior to a 3 day trip to the Normandy battlefield area in and around Bayeux. I realized the map size on my screen was inadequate to grasp the extensive detail involved, and 3 days prior to departure from our home in Oregon I sent an email to the Holts inquiring where I could obtain a paper version of the map component in Bayeux. The response was amazing in this day and age of impersonal commerce. Mrs. Holt mailed the map I needed to our hotel in Bayeux without charge.

As to substance, the guide has the historic and personal details rarely found in the narratives of this most important military event. Personal stories, recounting the smaller but crucial combat events, fill in the massive events of June 6, 1944. To be candid, reviewing the Holt's guide AFTER having seen the ground, and now having an appreciation of the physical extent of the front (being much larger than I had anticipated), I find significant value in the information that fills in or completes the picture of the combat plans and the events that actually evolved in the places visited.

If you are going to the D-Day invasion area, and have a serious interest in the breadth of history you are taking in, get Major and Mrs. Holt's guide. One further suggestion. Buy the paper version. You will want to go back and forth in the text and map pages to tie people, places and events together. I have just ordered the paper version to re-read and in anticipation of a return visit in the near future.

This information is exceptionally in depth and valuable. However, the print is very small. I can read it with my reading glasses, but I prefer to use a magnifying glass. I am going to Normandy in June for the 74th anniversary. The information in this book will be very helpful. I am glad I purchased this book.

I bought this book in preparation for my trip to the Normandy beaches. The book is amazing. It gives information a practically every museum, battery, marker, etc. I really found useful the coordinates that I will use in my GPS as I will be driving the area. It is organized using suggested itineraries for six different areas of the invasion locations. While I have created my own routes, these suggested tour routes helped my in planning my three day visit. These suggested are so detailed that each of the six would require approximately 6-7 hours. This book is a great resource if you are planning a trip to the D Day invasion area.

We spent 3 amazing days up in Normandy with nothing but this book as a guide. The GPS coordinates are a perfect resource.

One of them museums is now permanently closed, so it would be helpful, in this day & age, if the authors had an online place where users could provide feedback on closures.

We were there several years ago and felt we missed much. I have previously used the Holt guides to a number of the WWI sites and found them to be superior to any guide books to European battlefields. My plan is to incorporate this into my next trip. In looking at this volume, the descriptions are 'spot on.'

IF you are going you MUST have this book. If not it is a nice way to get a personal and "today" point of view of the place.

I ordered this book for my husband after our trip to Normandy. This book was on of several available at our B&B in Isigny-Sur-Mer and we used it while touring the area. This is a very good book and we hope to use it when we go back in a few years.
