The Rhine Crossing: Operations Flashpoint & Varsity (Battleground The Rhine Crossing) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 128 ratings

A detailed account of “the last great set piece operation carried out by the western Allies during the Second World War . . . surprisingly comprehensive.”—Pegasus Archive

By Spring 1945, with the Russians closing fast on Berlin from the East, the US and British Armies of Patton and Montgomery were faced with one major hurdle, the Rhine. Heavily defended by the Nazis, this obstacle would only be crossed by a massive operation requiring meticulous planning and bold execution.

The resulting operation involving 29 divisions was outstandingly successful. This book follows the river crossings by 30th and 79th US Divisions, codenamed Operation FLASHPOINT and the airdrop by 17th US Airborne Division (VARSITY). While covering quite different sectors, this book can be read in conjunction with its sister volumes
Operation Varsity and Operation Plunder by Tim Saunders.

The book provides quite a bit of detail of operations but more of the British point of view. A little more of the operation point of view of the 17th Airborne would have been appreciated. Still a good book about an operation that often gets over looked. I may be a bit biased also since my father was a Glider Trooper with the 17th Airborne and was in this assault he doesn't talk about it but talks about events after and prior. I also understand why. He's still living also.

Informative and well-written historical analysis of the Rhine Crossing of 1945, including the Allied Operations "Plunder", "Varsity" and "Grenade". Most enjoyable.

I HAVE REALLY ENJOYED READING THIS BOOK AS IT SPEAKS OF INDIVIDUALS DOING THINGS AND OF TEAMS WHO WERE TO HOLD POSITIONS COME WHAT MAY. IT MUST HAVE BEEN QUITE STRESSFUL ON THE GO FOR DAYS ON END. A GREAT DETAILED READ.

Very interesting but in some chapters perhaps to much detail which interrupts the enjoyable flow of the Book

Well worth a read but not many individual experiences more an overview of the tactical operation as a whole
