Moving Target: A Novel of Suspense (Ali Reynolds Book 9) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 2,977 ratings

A New York Times bestseller “combines well-rounded characterizations and brisk storytelling . . . for an entertaining and suspenseful” female sleuth thriller (Booklist).

In this “engrossing” (
Publishers Weekly) suspense novel from New York Times–bestselling author J.A. Jance, journalist-turned-investigator Ali Reynolds unearths a cold case that puts her in danger from a deadly arsonist.

Lance Tucker, an incarcerated juvenile offender and talented hacker in his own right, is set on fire one night and severely burned while hanging Christmas decorations in a lockup rec room. B. Simpson, Ali Reynolds’s fiancé and the man who helped put Lance in jail, feels obliged to get to the bottom of what happened. With Ali off in England to help Leland Brooks at a reunion with his long-estranged family, B. turns to someone else to help out—Ali’s good friend and Taser-carrying nun, Sister Anselm.

Meanwhile, in Bournemouth—Leland’s hometown—Ali begins to investigate the decades-old murder of Leland’s father, which Leland himself was once suspected of committing. With unsolved murders on both sides of the Atlantic, Ali, B., and Sister Anselm are united by their search for answers—and the jeopardy they get into as a result.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Just weeks before her wedding, Ali Reynolds accompanies eightysomething Leland Brooks, her longtime beloved majordomo, to England for his first trip back to his homeland in almost 60 years, a visit that reveals shocking family secrets. Meanwhile, Ali’s fiancé, B. Simpson, head of high-tech security company High Noon Enterprises, is diverted from his international business by the plight of teenage computer wunderkind Lance Tucker. Put in juvenile detention after breaking into his Texas school district’s computer system, Lance is almost fatally injured in what is deemed an accident. But as the bodies pile up, including those of Lance’s math teacher and a maintenance man at the detention center, it’s clear that someone badly wants GHOST, “the cyber version of Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak” that allows undetected web surfing, developed by Lance and his late teacher. In the ninth Ali Reynolds outing (after Deadly Stakes, 2013), Jance adroitly combines well-rounded characterizations and brisk storytelling with high-tech exploits, arson, kidnappings, and a shootout for an entertaining and suspenseful addition to this solid series. --Michele Leber

J.A. Jance is the New York Times best selling author of 46 contemporary mysteries in four different series.

A voracious reader, J. A. Jance knew she wanted to be a writer from the moment she read her first Wizard of Oz book in second grade. Always drawn to mysteries, from Nancy Drew right through John D. McDonald's Travis Magee series, it was only natural that when she tried her hand at writing her first book, it would be a mystery as well.

J. A. Jance went on to become the New York Times bestselling author of the J. P. Beaumont series, the Joanna Brady series, three interrelated thrillers featuring the Walker family, and Edge of Evil. Born in South Dakota and brought up in Bisbee, Arizona, Jance lives with her husband in Seattle, Washington, and Tucson, Arizona.

Jance is an avid crusader for many causes, including the American Cancer Society, Gilda's Club, the Humane Society, the YMCA, and the Girl Scouts. A lover of animals, she has a rescued Dachshund named Bella.

J. A. Jance is one of my most favorite authors. In this novel she has created a storyline at once intriguing and fast-paced. Characters are brought forward from previous novels in the series as well as created new. In both types the descriptions are rich, developed appropriately within the story, and detailed sufficiently to maintain the reader's interest while enhancing the story. Both good and bad characters are included with outcomes that make the story both satisfying and intriguing. The stage is set for follow-on stories as well as the completion of a story that leaves the reader satisfied and hungry at the same time. Moving Target is highly recommended to all.

This is not an extremely tense thriller, nor is it filled with extreme mind-boggling suspense. Well, maybe just a bit tense in places and some mind-boggling pages; however, it is an easy entertaining read with just enough mystery to cause the reader to keep turning pages to find out who-done-it. It is well edited, and has likeable characters.

The case of a teenager, in a Texas juvenile detention center, who is found with broken and badly burned legs and whose life is hanging by a thread, is a bit more complex than the cold case homicide of 60 years prior across the Atlantic in England.

The heroine, amateur sleuth, Ali Reynolds is very involved in trying to solve both cases, as is her fiancée, B., and her good friend Sister Anselm. Ali is spending a few days in England with her ageing British born friend and employee, Leland Brooks, who is getting reacquainted with long estranged family members. He discovers that his father's death, so long ago, was a homicide and was never solved. He asks Ali to investigate. She does, and lands herself into a bit of personal danger which has the prospect of becoming life threatening. As Ali follows the clues, the reader may be a bit surprised at the development and ending of this cold case.

B. is in Japan on business and believes the Texas teenager's accident was an attempted homicide. Well, of course, in spite of the land and water between, Ali gets involved in this case as well, and the investigations become interesting indeed. Sister Anselm is the guardian angel for the badly injured teen. Sister Anselm, sometimes called the Angel of Death because of her role as a patient advocate to seriously injured patients, is quite a colorful individual herself. Ali and B. are putting the puzzle pieces together while body counts are climbing for those trying to either help or steal from the teenager. He has a secret that could be worth mega bucks and somebody wants it badly enough to kill for what is not rightfully theirs.

Slowly and methodically things fall into place to find a satisfactory ending for everyone......the good guys, that is.

The book was well written and kept my interest. I like the genre and consider this book a good example of Jance's work. She has believable characters that are not one-dimensional. I have read the earlier books in the series and have found that each builds on the one before, although there is no need to read them in order. She has complex plots and logical outcomes that are not really predictable. A good read!

Great book! Moving target weaves old friends and introduces new ones. An be read independent but I definitely recommend reading the series in order.

it's always sad for me when I finish a J A Jance book, I read them so fast because they are always good. This one doesn't disappoint. I've been a follower of her novels for years, this is one in the Ali Reynolds series, very likeable characters always with lots of money to be able to do the cool detecting that they do.
I eagerly await her next novel. I hope it's Beaumont!

I was also fortunate enough to meet J A Jance at a book signing, she lives in the Seattle area as do I. she's a very nice woman who has a mind full of great stories.

Warning: Arsonist/Firebug and their brutal devastation plays a prominent part. Compelling story that has two very different mysteries being resolved. The story does not give the reader an "everyone is fine" ending. The story does end with all coming to terms with their lives and moving forward. There are plenty of twists within each mystery to keep the reader guessing.

Believable characters, realistic and informative dialogue.

Regarding forensic work:
"Banshee Group takes the position that all people are important. Rather than simply keening over dead bodies, we help them find their way home to their loved ones.”

I may re-read parts of this story. I look forward to other works by this author.

I've enjoyed reading J.A.Jance's novels for more than seventeen years, and love all the characters, who are like old friends by now. This one, like every other one I've read is exciting, well thought out and believable. I'm off to order the next one now.

If you're a Jance fan, this is a must. Another in the Ali Reynolds series sees the bad guys caught with the able assistance of her now fiancé and his sidekick. In this book, two separate cases are solved. And in true Jance fashion, there is a happy ending. Can't wait for the sequel with the wedding! Obviously that will go off without a hitch... or will it?
