The Long Shadow: A Novel (The Annika Bengtzon Series Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 322 ratings

In this follow-up to Liza Marklund’s “stunningly great” thriller Lifetime, newspaper reporter Annika Bengtzon is left to pick up the pieces after a shocking and complex murder case turns her world upside down and leaves her personal life in shambles.

Meanwhile, an intruder brutally murders an entire family on Spain’s Costa del Sol, and Annika must fly to the glitzy locale to report on the case. Upon arrival she discovers that a fifth family member is unaccounted for. Soon, the killers are found, but they too have met their demise—in the same grisly manner they killed the Söderström family.

Amid a culture weighed down by drug smuggling and money laundering, Annika must try to find the missing girl before it’s too late.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* As Spain’s Costa del Sol attracts wealthy residents, it becomes known as Costa del Crime, with a proliferation of home burglaries in which residents are temporarily gassed while their homes are stripped of valuables. Then a burglary in which a different gas is used results in the deaths of all five of the home’s Swedish residents: former NHL player Sebastian Soderstrom, his solicitor wife, his two young children, and his mother-in-law. Stockholm crime reporter Annika Bengtzon, having just turned down an editorial job on the restructuring Evening Post, pursues the story with her trademark persistence, particularly when she learns that Soderstrom’s teenage daughter from his first marriage was absent during the burglary and has disappeared. With Annika’s personal life in a state of flux—her cop lover turns out to be married, and her ex-husband is making moves to reconnect—she has little patience for those who impede her progress as she finds a web of drug dealing and money laundering stretching from Sweden to Morocco and looping back to her previous outing in Lifetime (2013). In Marklund’s eighth mystery in this series, she looks at society’s strivers as she continues her tradition of superlative Scandinavian crime fiction with a tough but appealingly fallible protagonist who leaves readers wanting more. --Michele Leber

Liza Marklund continues to surprise me with her wonderful books. From the very first book to this latest one, I am fascinated with following the adventures of journalist Annika Bengtzon. The books to read in order are: Exposed (aka Studio 69), Vanished (aka Paradise), Prime Time, The Bomber, Red Wolf, Novel's Last Will, Lifetime and A Place in the Sun (aka The Long Shadow). I'm looking forward to following Annika Bengtzon in the next novel from this great author. Sometimes I can catch the movie made from one of her books that have subtitles in English. Still thrilling and so very closely followed from the books.

Should have been two novels-as it was two stories. I have read all of Marklund's books and the fist part of this book was fast-paced, believable, an interesting look at Swedish crime in Spain. There was crime, sex, infidelity, lying, people pretending to be something they weren't, organized crime, houses being gased-and then robbed. Definitely a nail-biter. The second half is a follow up on a lost girl, Marklund tries to tie it all together but I thought it was a reach. 5 Stars for part 1 - 2 stars for the second story.

I found this book to be a little flat compared to the previous Annika Bengtzon novels. The story seemed to ride up and down like a roller coaster and was a bit fantastical. If this had been my first Annika Bengtzon novel, I doubt I would consider reading the previous novels. That said I will still continue to read her future novels as I am hooked on Annika's story.

The most complex yet. Some are warning there is a theme from earlier books, while this is true, I think most readers should not be concerned to much about it. Pay the most attention to her personal life in the past. She does a good job at the end tying the complex story together and also gives you reminders of the previous story. This is, as always with her, a well written story that does have surprises at the end!!

Another strong entry in this strangely addictive series about crime reporter Annika Bengtzon. All of them should be read in order, but this one in particular is a sequel to Lifetime.
Much of The Long Shadow is set on Spain's Costa del Sol and Ms Marklund has perfectly captured the tacky overbuilding of southern Europe's coastline resorts.
These books are fun!
Note to Annika: Don't get back with your jerk of an ex-husband and ease up on Sofia. I know you won't pay any attention to me, but I'm right...

The Long Shadow by Liza Marklund is so well put together--I love the little story within the bug story which explains a lot of what the main character Annika uncovers in her quest for a story and the truth.

I also love continuing characters and their private lives intertwined with the story line. It's like sitting down with an old friend book after book.

It's a very realistic description of a journalistic approach. Apparently, there isn't a main investigation, but this only makes the book more interesting as it lets the reader enjoy the process of gathering information for a newspaper article rather than the developing of the plot. The main character is very well defined, while the others are only sketched.

The Long Shadow directly continues the story begun by Liza Marklund in Lifetime. Start there; both are outstanding but this book needs that backstory. Annika Bengtzon is a well crafted character with depth and a very real feeling reporting career. This is a must read for Swedish fiction readers!

Another book in the Annika Bengtzon series (#8 I believe that has been translated). This time the crime reporter is sent down to Costa del Sol to provide investigative reporting on events in the Scandinavian Community in Spain which of course include murder.

This book is less restricted than her earlier books which are located in Sweden and there her personal life is limiting her options...but here she finds lots of new experiences and ways of life and intrigue.

I think you should read these books in order to get the most out of them due to issues surrounding Annikas life.

Although I am a fan of scandanavian crime this is the first Liza Marklund book I have read. I picked it as it is primarily set in Spain and I was going on holiday there. I enjoyed it so much I immediately ordered the first one in the series. A superbly well crafted crime story with great contextual background about the Costa del Crime and the drug trade. The role of the central character, Annika Bengtzon, as a journalist gives a different slant from the usual police/investigator style. As the pace of the story gathered I couldn't wait to read the next chapters. A delight for crime thriller fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crime on the Costas, Swedish style

Anneka Bengtszon makes a sympathetic and interesting crime reporter living in Stockholm with her two children. Her ex husband is living with another woman but does not sound happy which she finds somewhat unsettling. Following the horrific murder of a whole Swedish family in Spain, Anneka traces the clues to to the Costa del Sol in Spain and thence to Morrocco where vast quantities of cannabis are grown. This is part of a large series and I will definitely read more.

Also published as A Place in the Sun.
This is the second of Liza Marklund's books I've read featuring Annika Bengtzon a crime reporter. The author has created an immensely strong character within an interesting plot however it is also very contrived and jumbled at times, maybe just down to the translation!
