Seasons of the Sacred Earth: Following the Old Ways on an Enchanted Homestead Kindle Edition
"We are just one little family on a small homestead deep in a wild place. What we can do is small, but perhaps through this book we can impart the wisdom we have discovered. It is just this: spirit and enchantment and reality are bound together in a green world full of wonders."
Living Green with the Spirits of the Land
In 2007, the Seruntine family relocated to a secluded Nova Scotia homestead. They made it a point to live gently upon the land by growing and raising their own food, living in balance with the surrounding forest, and honoring Nature's spirits. In return, the land and the spirits looked after them. Seasons of the Sacred Earth follows life deep in their woodland hollow through a magical year. It is a marvelous journey into a place where gardens grow by love and magic, where children romp through enchanted forests, where mystery beckons by light of fireflies. And living close to Nature, they discover an ancient truth: the magical and the mystical are never farther than Earth and Sky.

About the authors
Cliff Seruntine is a devoted permaculturist, a practicing shaman, a writer and fiddler, and a psychotherapist with a busy private practice. He was born in New Orleans and grew up in the bayou country on his grandfather's farm among French speaking Acadians. Cliff was always one to roam the outdoors and spent many hours among the elders of the countryside, absorbing lore of the myths, enchantment and spirits that were so much a part of the Acadian world. Shortly after Cliff began college, he took a hiatus to see Alaska that turned into a decade and a half sojourn in the wilderness. Often dwelling at a remote cabin, Cliff studied the shamanic practices and Inuqun beliefs of the subarctic aboriginal peoples, and found in them many curious parallels to the Acadian and Celtic faerie faith.
Years later Cliff and his wife, Daphne, came to desire a place where they could cultivate their own food, keep horses and develop their dream of a self-sufficient homestead. They relocated to the misty wooded glens of the Nova Scotia highlands, ancestral Canadian home of the Gaels. There they maintain organic gardens, raise dairy goats and keep alive old skills such as horse driving, cheesemaking, brewing and woodscraft. They also teach classes on how to live green while living well.
Cliff is the author of Seasons of the Sacred Earth (Llewellyn, 2013), An Ogham Wood (Avalonia Esoterica Press, 2011) and The Lore of the Bard (Llewellyn, 2003). He has contributed to a number books, including The Faery Queens Anthology (Avalonia, 2013), The Faery Craft (Llewellyn, 2013) and has been invited to write several times for Llewellyn's bestselling Witches' Calendar. Cliff has also been published in magazines on Celtic history, paranormal phenomena and written for webzines about ecology, sustainable living and earth-based spirituality.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2015I can't recommend this book highly enough. Very interesting and informative. This guy can write and I loved his stories. This is a journal of his family and personal experience living on a homestead in Nova Scotia. The pagan and spiritual experiences are fascinating. I just sent for his new book and plan to write to this author. I hope he keeps writing. I'll buy anything by him.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2017I got very pulled into this book; the author's writing is beautiful and almost hypnotic: he really made me feel as if I were there with him among the trees and spirits. Highly recommended for Pagans, homesteaders, or anyone who simply wants a stronger connection to the Earth.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2013At first blush, and If you are old enough, you will think of the hippy way of life in the 60's. Then you will think of American indians..then wiccan. Halfway through the book you will wish you could live in a 100 year old farmhouse in Nova Scotia. This family is living the way of our ancestors...only with funds to do so. The author and his wife are very knowledgeable about living off the harsh lands on an island. He instructs throughout the book on making cheese, wine, cider, how to care for livestock, how to cultivate gardens, how to store and can foods. He teaches how to live in harmony with nature, track animals and respect the animals living in the forest. He is not a believer in God but speaks of honoring the green man, fairies, ghosts and forest spirits. This Is not a book to be read in one sitting, and not a book to skim. It is well written, instructive, spiritual and interesting. Not what I thought it would be when purchased but Iam not sorry to have read it. I learned and wished my own life could be so pleasant.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2013Cliff Seruntine and his family live their lives very tuned in to nature. This book reminds me how we could be living a life with greater awareness of the wheel of the year. He gives a poetic account of how to do many things the old fashioned way in terms of technique and love. Very refreshing. I wish he had 10 more books like this, I'd read'em all.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2014I loved this book! I savored it..... read it slow..... cause didn't want it to end. The author draws you in this magical, simple way of life. Living off the land in a rustic cottage.... honoring the seasons.... family & mother earth..... taking pleasure from all the creatures & this beautiful planet has to offer.... you want to step inside & live there, too. This is just what the Goddess ordered... the power of living each day & season with gratitude & love...... cherishing all the simple things in life! LOVED it!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2013The Seasons of the Sacred Earth made me want to cut ties and live off the grid in the thick of the woods. The writer's style is eloquent and descriptive, and aids you in finding a connection to Nature that many of us may never have the opportunity to feel for ourselves. Even the cover is beautiful....
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2021It's hard to describe the love I have for this book. The small peak into this family life in an enchanted homestead is so delightful! I had to read it slowly after the middle because I didn't want it to end.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2017Beautifully written. You will want to read it slowly to savor every word. The magical stories about the author's homestead are sprinkled with recipes, mythology, and other fun stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended book
I loved this book and didn't want it to end, partly for it's subject matter but also for the way in which it was written. Having a personal interest in ways of living close to the earth and in having a deep respect for the natural world, it was refreshing to read an account that was completely honest and written so clearly.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in traditional ways of living life close to the earth and in accordance with the Celtic seasons, but also for anyone who has a deep respect for the earth we live on.
The book covers all the months of the year and celebrations and rituals that are followed at these times like Imbolc, Samhain and the solstices. There are also practical guides for the reader such as making your own cheese and cider, which are easy to understand.
The whole book feels like it is written with love. The beauty of the prose and accounts of daily life really draw you in.
I personally loved the sense of wonder and enchantment that is portrayed though descriptions of practical ways of living coupled with a deep respect for the spiritual world.
