Revolution's Shore (The Highroad Trilogy Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 141 ratings

In this “delightful SF adventure,” plucky interstellar adventurer Lily Ransome faces off against a despotic empire (Locus).
Lilyaka Hae Ransome grew up on the colonized planet of Unruli. Strong-willed and with a warrior’s spirit, she broke free of her preordained life as part of a privileged mining family, choosing instead to venture into space in search of her missing martial arts instructor and mentor, Heredes. The journey took her into the maw of an explosive revolution where she became involved in an intergalactic rebellion and found love in an unexpected place—as well as true strength within herself. Now, as a tyrannical empire flexes its muscle in the universe, Lily and the charismatic, not-quite-human Hawk must band together with a motley crew of unforgettable characters, engaging in a conflict in which honor, love, and freedom are all at stake.
Revolution’s Shore is the second book of the Highroad trilogy, which begins with A Passage of Stars and concludes with The Price of Ransom

About the Author

Kate Elliott has been writing stories since she was nine years old, which has led her to believe that she is either a little crazy or that writing, like breathing, keeps her alive. Her most recent series is the Spiritwalker Trilogy (Cold Magic, Cold Fire, and Cold Steel), an Afro-Celtic post-Roman alternate-nineteenth-century Regency ice-punk mashup with airships, Phoenician spies, the intelligent descendants of troodons, and revolution. Her previous works include the Crossroads trilogy (starting with Spirit Gate), the Crown of Stars septology (starting with King’s Dragon), the Novels of the Jaran, the Highroad Trilogy, and the novel The Labyrinth Gate, originally published under the name Alis A. Rasmussen.
She likes to play sports more than she likes to watch them; right now, her sport of choice is outrigger canoe paddling. Her spouse has a much more interesting job than she does, with the added benefit that they had to move to Hawaii for his work; thus the outrigger canoes. They also have a schnauzer (a.k.a. the Schnazghul).

I wasn't totally sold on the first novel, but the follow-up improved on the original. It developed the relationship that I found first interesting from the first book: Lilly's romance with the mysterious Kyosti. Throughout the second novel, Kyosti's violence and aggressive control of Lilly is more developed and becomes even more threatening. The only thing I didn't like about the novel was that Lilly's reasoning for staying with Kyosti, even after he reveals his violent side, seemed flimsy, especially for an otherwise independent, competent woman, but the characterization and development was believable otherwise. Like Elliott's other novels, the strength lies in the world building, and in the complicated character relations.

Sadly, I had to keep re-downloading this book as the file is somehow corrupted. Had to keep resetting my kindle as well and ended up downloading it six or seven times to get to the end. Usually, if this happens with a book it is caused by the Wi-Fi but in the end I decided the file must be corrupt on Amazon as several other books I downloaded at the same time had no problems. Given the difficulties in actually being able to read it you are probably surprised that I still gave it 4 stars. It is well written and by one of my fav writers so what can I say LOL.

This series is very complicated to read. There are lots of odd characters and it is a little jumpy in places so you really need to be able to concentrate when you follow along with the story. The various alien races and cross breeds add lots of depth to the characters and the action moves along at a steady pace to keep you interested. I immediately purchased the next book in the series so I highly recommend this one to anyone who likes Sci-Fi and Fantasy adventure books. Hopefully, you won't have all the file corruption issues I had.

The series is a totally captivating space opera. A coming of age story, Lily accepts the mantel of leadership of her ragtag band. She’s off to save her friends and the universe.

I really enjoyed all the books in this series. I think the writing is very good, the characters are very engaging and the world building is creative and interesting. There is also some mystery going on, which is engaging. I highly recommend this series and this author.

As with most digital books I have read the editing of the book could have been better, but a good read.
