A fabulous and lyrical look at the magic of American deserts. Lopez is the most poetic essayist I've ever read, and through his use of mythology and imagination he evokes the feelings of desert life. This is not a compilation of facts but a beautiful and evocative rendering of the starkness and beauty of the American Southwest.

Skillfully crafted prose that makes the book very hard to put down.

I thoroughly enjoyed this small book and highly recommend it.

The book was published some time ago and seems to have become somewhat rare. By the look of it, the paper stock had a sulfur based ingredient that had yellowed the pages and also weakened them to a state of fragility. Nonetheless, I was very pleased to find the book and to now have it part of my home library.

Read it years ago, wanted to re-read it.

More about inner spirituality in relation to rhe desert, rather than the desert itself.

    Makes me miss the desert.

Desert Notes: Reflections in the Eye of a Raven by Barry Holstun Lopez, is a series of essays about the American southwest desert. This is an odd critique coming from me, but I found the book too abstract and mystical. Yes, it is about the desert, but it is not really grounded enough in the reality of the desert. It is a thought bubble most of the time.

Yes, he writes well; sure, the work is lyrical. But in the end I wanted a better sense of real time and real place.

One of the best views of the Mojave from both the naturalist and mystical viewpoints. This was the first of Barry Lopez's books that I read in the 1970s. I continued to read his work, including River Notes, Crow and Weasel, Arctic Dreams, Crossing Open Ground and Home Ground. He is a master.

The author was in a weird frame of mind, but I read it all the way through and enjoyed it.
