Kevin Chandler and "The Case of the Missing Dogs" Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 23 ratings

Kevin Chandler lives next door to Bill the butcher – the meanest man in town. Bill’s son, Dylan, bullies Kevin and his friend, Ben. One night, on his way home from Ben’s house, Kevin sees Dylan going into the ramshackle garage behind the Butcher house, and he thinks he hears a dog whimpering. The Butchers don’t own a dog, and everyone knows Dylan hurts animals, so Kevin decides he must find out what’s happening in that garage. He asks Ben to help him, and when his sister, Emma, finds out, she wants to help, too.

Why does Dylan Butcher have a dog in his garage? Is it the missing dog Ben’s father read about in the newspaper? How will the boys get into the locked garage to find out what’s going on without Dylan or his mean father finding them?

A mystery appropriate for ages 8 - 12.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I enjoyed your book.It was suspenseful. It was so good I could not stop reading it. I had to know what was going to happen next. I liked all the characters but I did not like Bill or Dylan. They were mean. Yes, I do think this could happen. I also think it would be a great movie." Maverick Liberty

From the Author

When I was young, my family lived near a wooded area. My eldest sister used to tell me stories about those woods that scared me, but they excited me, too. That's when I started making up stories.

Kevin Chandler is an ordinary boy who stumbles upon a mystery. He believes there is a dog in trouble and will do anything to help save it, even if it means getting hurt. He doesn't let his fear
keep him from doing what he thinks is right.

This book is suitable for anyone between the ages of nine and ninety.

I didn't realize this was a child's book when I ordered it for my kindle. It reads very quick, tells a wonderful story about friendship, not making judgements, and loving and caring for animals. Even adults will enjoy reading this story.

A cute mystery for young readers but a bit shallow once you get to pre-teens.

This book and all the other dog books he wrote are great. They are very interesting and some parts are funny. The description he gives of what happens in his story is great. I enjoyed all his books that I have purchased. They are light hearted reading and very relaxing stories of animals, the beautiful part is the animals always seem to be the winners.

Confession--I only read this book because I had read A.L.'s Pello Island series and fell in love with her writing style. Now, I can't believe I'm about to start raving about a kids' book but I am:

Kevin Chandler is a twelve-year-old boy who thinks he's caught his neighbor in the act of being cruel to an animal. What follows is a completely believable story of a young man's courage, honor and integrity. I don't want to give too much away but your sons (or grandsons) will find Kevin completely relatable and YOU will appreciate the fact that the adults in the story aren't paper-thin characters who appear and disappear whenever it's convenient to the plot.

Writing for kids is always tricky and I can't think of a harder age to satisfy than the tween market. Ms. Jambor has woven a tale that is simple enough for even young readers yet complex enough for kids who are a bit older. While I certainly think girls will also like the book, I have to speak as a mother who remembers how hard it was to find boy-friendly books when my son was this age.

Too bad I didn't have Kevin Chandler on my bookshelf back then.

This is a simple easy to read and follow crime/mystery for the younger reader. The main character Kevin is a likeable hero and his enemies Dylan and Bill Butcher, are presented as suitably cruel and cold-hearted villains. Amy sets the scene of a typical suburban family well with good sensory descriptions that make the reader feel as if they are living the story with the characters.

When neighbours dogs go missing Kevin and his best friend Ben, decide to find out who is taking them. Of course they point the finger at the bullying Dylan and set out to bring him to justice.

However, not all is at it seems and when the point of view switches to Dylan, the reader gets an insight into his life and personality and our feelings towards him do change. I liked this twist in the tale and rather than it being a one-dimensional whodunit, the story becomes deeper and more satisfying to read than most adventure tales for this age group.

Amy creates believable characters with naturalistic dialogue and tells the story in clear detail so that you know what is happening at all times. Some lovely physical descriptions help to make the locations and characters come alive.

There is lots of action and drama to keep the reader wanting to carry on and with a satisfying ending; this story is just great for an easy read. I recommend this book to anyone, young or old, who enjoys a good mystery action adventure.
