The Last Days of Stonewall Jackson: The Mortal Wounding of the Confederacy's Greatest Icon (Emerging Civil War Series) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 72 ratings

An exhaustive look at the final hours of the Confederacy’s most audacious general.

May 1863. The Civil War was in its third spring, and Confederate Lt. Gen. Thomas Jonathan Jackson stood at the peak of his fame. He had risen from obscurity to become “Old Stonewall,” adored across the South and feared and respected throughout the North. On the night of May 2, however, just hours after Jackson executed the most audacious maneuver of his career and delivered a crushing blow against an unsuspecting Union army at Chancellorsville, disaster struck.

The Last Days of Stonewall Jackson recounts the events of that fateful night—considered one of the most pivotal moments of the war—and the tense vigil that ensued as Jackson struggled with a foe even he could not defeat. From Guinea Station, where Jackson crosses the river to rest under the shade of the trees, the story follows Jackson’s funeral and burial, the strange story of his amputated arm, and the creation and restoration of the building where he died (now known as the Stonewall Jackson Shrine). This newly revised and expanded second edition features more than 50 pages of fresh material, including almost 200 illustrations, maps, and eye-catching photos.

New appendices allow readers to walk in Jackson’s prewar footsteps through his adopted hometown of Lexington, Virginia; consider the ways Jackson’s memory has been preserved through monuments, memorials, and myths; and explore the misconceptions behind the Civil War’s great What-If: “What if Stonewall had survived his wounds?”

With the engaging prose of master storytellers, Chris Mackowski and Kristopher D. White make
The Last Days of Stonewall Jackson a must-read for Civil War novices and buffs alike.

From the Author

I'm so delighted to have this new edition available, with 60 pages of new material, including new appendices on Jackson in Lexington, Jackson in memory, and Jackson memorials and monuments. There's also an appendix that explores some of the assumptions behind the Civil War's greatest "What If": "What if Stonewall hadn't been shot at Chancellorsville?" We've included updated maps courtesy of cartographer Hal Jespersen, and dozens of new pictures. This is the "Jackson statue at Manassas" edition of "Last Days"!

American history held little meaning for me as a child; I simply learned my dates and places and regurgitated them. As I grew older, the errors and fallacies I was taught began to glare in the light of knowledge. Then, I moved to D.C. and the names and places of towns, battles and people became three-dimensional. Mackowski and White add another dimension with The Last Days of Stonewall Jackson.

This book brings the reader into 1863 and breathes life into American history and, more importantly, the last days of Stonewall Jackson. No matter one's political or philosophical bent, the creative non-fiction writing allows the reader to know and understand, if not agree with, the historical and personal happenings.

The writing reads as if one is curled on the couch and watching a movie unfold. The choice of dropping the reader immediately into the military push and orienting where in the push the troops are located creates a realism that, at once, engages and repels. Much like the proverbial train wreck, I wanted to be there, yet knew what was coming so I wanted to move away - cover my eyes. That kind of evocative writing, in what is basically a history book, speaks to the depth of research and knowledge these gentlemen have performed and possess. I would offer that this might be considered as a text for an American History course.

"The Last Days of Stonewall Jackson" provides such a descriptive account of the circumstances surrounding Jackson's wounding and eventual death that I found myself moved to tears. I kept hoping that somehow he would survive when it was obvious he would not.

The vivid accounts of those closest to Jackson enable the reader to truly appreciate how this man's life and death came to affect so many people. I thought that Mackowski and White did a thorough job of answering the questions that readers would want to know. What happened to Jackson's horse? Where was Jackson's arm buried? What became of the people that were with Jackson in his last few days?

The authors addressed the credibility of the myths surrounding Jackson's legend and challenged the "what if" factor. What if Jackson had survived? Would it have affected the outcome of the war?

It's a book I would definitely recommend for anyone interested in the Civil War and in history in general.

Excellent, brief overview of the events leading up to his wounding and death from an infectious complication. Superb period photos. A map or two should have been added.

Stonewall Jackson was a great person and a beloved husband by his wife. He was admired by the students he taught. His wife wrote a great book about her husband.

Great read. Authors do great job adding in little extra historical nuggets and details on not just Jackson’s death, but other significantly connected events and places. ECW is on the storytellers fore front for Civil War history

A lot of books and articles have been written about Stonewall and quite a bit about his last days
Mackowski gives us a well written and researched account of the last battle and days of Stonewall. What kind of person was Stonewall, how could his own men shoot him, did he die from the wounds or the treatment? The questions are answered

Part of the EMERGING CIVIL WAR SERIES published by Savas Beatie, Chris Mackowski and Kristopher White's THE LAST DAYS OF STONEWALL JACKSON is a compelling chronicle of the life, death and legacy of the South's greatest general.

Jackson fell at Chancellorsville, fatally wounded by his own troops. The authors cover Jackson's plan of attack, his movements that brought on the fateful reconnaissance, Jackson's wounding, subsequent medical treatement, his last days and burial. Also covered related topics like the preservation of the house in which he died, Jackson memorials and a bio of the doctor who treated him along with fascinating chapters on 'What if Jackson hadn't been shot' and the subsequent lives of people associated with him.

Mackowski and White breath fresh life into a tale much told. Their narrative is informative, affecting and places the reader front and center in the events of May 1863. The book is illustrated throughout with vintage and contemporary photographs and illustrations of Jackson, his family, CSA and USA commanders, the building he died in, his grave, various statues/memorials in his honor, etc.

I wanted to give THE LAST DAYS OF STONEWALL JACKSON five stars. Unfortunately, like all the volumes in this series, it lacks an index, which I think is vital. In any case, Civil War buffs will enjoy this latest addition to the books on Jackson. Recommended.

A detailed but not overly boring book about a complicated battle and a great loss.

An easy and informative read. I especially liked the follow-up chapters at the end.

I recommend this book to any Civil War or Stonewall Jackson enthusiast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Time could not be turned back, even stopped. Gen. Jackson has gone into legend and still been living in many people's hearts.

Carm, serene and quiet seemed to be filled in the atmosphere around General jackson. Far behind battle field, everything seemed to go slow peaceful and religious. With doctors' skills, Mrs. Mary Anne Jackson's love and subordinate generals' devotions, but God's Will would not be changed and Gen. jackson would go across a river with God to the shades of trees.
Of all series of emerging books , I have chosen this book at first. The best accounts of all Jackson stories, I recommend confidently.

Interesting book with many aspects of his death I had not been familiar with. I had recently visited Chancellorsville , Fairfield and many other sites in this book. It enabled me to better understand the events that took place in all these areas pertinent to the subject matter.
