“A tender and emotionally-charged…story of life, survival and, ultimately, of love that transcends all.”—Karen White, New York Times bestselling author

What could be worse than losing your child? Having to pretend he’s still alive…

Bestselling author Will Shepard is caught in the twilight of grief, after his young son dies in a car accident. But when his father’s aging mind erases the memory, Will rewrites the truth. The story he spins brings unexpected relief…until he’s forced to return to rural North Carolina, trapping himself in a lie.

Holistic veterinarian Hannah Linden is a healer who opens her heart to strays but can only watch, powerless, as her grown son struggles with inner demons. When she rents her guest cottage to Will and his dad, she finds solace in trying to mend their broken world, even while her own shatters.

As their lives connect and collide, Will and Hannah become each other’s only hope—if they can find their way into a new story, one that begins with love.

“White’s beautifully crafted novel demonstrates how two broken souls can find peace for themselves and their loved ones.”—Booklist

From Booklist

Written in thesouthern gothic manner, White’s (The Unfinished Garden, 2012) latest unsettling tale explores the boundaries between parents and children, reality and delusion. Best-selling author Will travels from New York City to North Carolina when his Native American father, Jacob, is ousted from a senior facility for starting a fistfight. Jacob, whose memory is spotty, doesn’t remember that his grandson died in a fatal car crash a few months earlier, and Will can’t decide whether to keep reminding Jacob or to let him believe the boy is still alive. While Will looks for another place for Jacob to live, they stay in a cabin on the property of divorced holistic veterinarian Hannah, whose graduate student son has threatened to commit suicide. Since debilitating depression runs in the family, Hannah is working to keep her son from killing himself like her father did. While the thirtysomething Will and older Hannah feel connected, how can they come together with their families imploding? White’s beautifully crafted novel demonstrates how two broken souls can find peace for themselves and their loved ones. --Pat Henshaw

I grew up in rural England with big dreams of becoming a novelist. So, armed with a history degree from York University, I went to work in the London fashion industry.

Passing through JFK Airport one day (for my job), I fell in love with an American professor. Reader, I married him. And became a midwestern marketing director with a secret: I was writing a novel.

When my husband was offered a distinguished professorship at the University of North Carolina, we moved to the southern forest, where I became a woodland gardener and a stay-at-home mother. I carved out time to write, but it wasn't until our young son developed OCD that I found my passion: creating characters who chip away at stereotypes of mental illness.

Now I write award-winning, emotionally-layered bookclub fiction about families in crisis, complicated relationships, and crazy critters … topped off with a healthy dollop of hope.

I fell in love with Barbara Claypole White's debut novel The Unfinished Garden and was beyond excited to get my hands on a copy of The In-Between Hour. As expected, I could not put it down! Her second novel proved to be equally captivating, wonderfully written, poignantly rich, and beautifully crafted. Claypole White has a way of capturing reality in its most truthful state. She never shies away from exploring the tough bits of life, which makes her stories heartbreaking, joyful, thrilling, and relatable. In fact, I’d say that is Claypole White’s strong suit – she dives head-first into life: messy, complicated, and mesmerizingly beautiful. Bravo! The reader sees the human experience in its rawest form; pain, pleasure, anxiety, peace, grief, redemption, depression, and love are intricately interwoven into the stories of her characters. In The In-Between Hour, I particularly appreciated her exploration of heritage and one’s ties to history, tradition, place, and family. I enjoyed getting lost in the woods of Occoneechee Mountain, as her descriptions of flora, fauna, and nature are breathtaking and masterful. I cannot more highly recommend The In-Between Hour and The Unfinished Garden!

White consistently creates characters I can relate to. We see their damage and we see their potential and their beauty. My inclination is to now describe the characters (writer/rock climber; country vet, etc.) but truly these people are not defined by their jobs or activities, but by their relationships to one another and to people in the past.

The description of this novel that I read started out with a man forced to pretend his dead son was alive. I read no farther, thinking, "What a stupid premise", but came back to this novel because I loved White's other books. The premise makes sense within the warless of this novel and does not feel at all contrived. Somehow White keeps me reading despite not having great complexity of plot or typical page-turning prose. She makes me care about these people and exposes the reader to their thoughts and fears.

I recommend this books, but I can't say it is her best. She bogs down in the thoughts of the characters at times, until my eyes started to skip ahead. Some pages feel repetitious, in need of more editing. Yet in the end I enjoyed the book because the strengths of the writing clearly outweighed the parts I was less fond of.

The In-Between Hour, is a touching, insightful, powerful novel by master story teller Barbara Claypole White. The characters each have their wounds and their imperfections. Will, the sexy and intriguing protagonist, struggling to come to terms with the death of his son, Hannah, the healer who seems to be able to help everyone but her son, who is battling his own demons, Will’s father, who struggles to deal with the death of his wife, and his own aging mind. The novel made me laugh, cry and think. From the very first page I was caught up in the story and the characters as they dealt with love, loss, grief and pain. I highly recommend this beautiful, poignant novel.

I loved the story. The only thing I didn't like was the F bomb being used. Number 1, it wasn't necessary, and 2, I don't think a native American from So Carolina would be using it. I doubt if I will read anymore of this authors books since I like to pass them on to my family to read and I would never pass this book to anyone. Will probably resale it.

I started reading Barbara Claypole White novels with one of her latest and worked my way back through earlier ones. She has a knack for creating damaged characters and giving them hope and in the process, giving all of us hope no matter what problems we may carry on our shoulders. Hannah, Will, Jacob and Galen will grab you by the heart and the throat and won't let go. I smiled and I cried...sometimes within the space of a page.

If you haven't read one of her books, start now. Start with any of them because they are all beautifully written stories about being human and all that involves.

I’m conflicted. I wanted to like this one more than I did. I’ve read a number of her books and enjoyed them. But I also feel four stars does Barbara Claypole White an injustice. She really bares her soul with discussion of mental illness and grief and the human condition and it is gripping! You can feel the anguish and see how different people deal with both.
I’m cool with the budding romance between the two main characters. But in the depths of this book, weird things were tossed in that didn’t fit. Will getting an erection. The word “babe” too many times. And, while I grew up listening to WV dialect, NC can’t be too different. Jake’s use of ‘were’ instead of ‘was’ was too blatant. It was distracting.
I’d still recommend this book for the sheer human-ness of most of it.

Barbara Claypole White may be my new favorite author. I loved this book even more than I loved The Perfect Son. Touching on so many points- suicide, mental health, parenting, loss, aging, dementia and love. It's hard to imagine one story touching all those points and doing it well but Barbara does it. The characters are real, well developed and connect in surprising ways. Read this book, you won't be disappointed.

This book was an easy read, with realistic characters, each facing specific issues of their own. The author developed the characters well and intertwined their lives in an interesting manner.

Barbara's first novel, The Unfinished Garden, dealt with OCD with empathy and much humour. I could not wait to read The In-Between Hour and it surely did not disappoint. Totally absorbing from the first page, the novel's characters are engaging and the plot unravels in an intriguing way. Superb empathy for Jacob, who is losing his memory. No sooner had I finished this book but I had to visit my aging aunt, who had gone down hill rapidly in the last 2 1/2 months. I gained some beneficial insight into the complex nature of dementia.

I loved TUG but The In-Between Hour demonstrates the author's progression in leaps and bounds. I am so impressed how this English "rose" captures so well the subtleties of the American South and the native Americanisms of Jacob.

This is no copycat genre book. It is new and fresh. You also need a box of tissues near to the end!

So, so clever Barbara. Eagerly awaiting number 3 ..........
