Girl on the Golden Coin: A Novel of Frances Stuart Kindle Edition
Debut author Marci Jefferson's Girl on the Golden Coin brings to life a captivating woman whose beauty, compassion, and intellect impacted a king and a nation.
Impoverished and exiled to the French countryside after the overthrow of the English Crown, Frances Stuart survives merely by her blood-relation to the Stuart Royals. But in 1660, the Restoration of the Stuart Monarchy in England returns her family to favor. Frances discards threadbare gowns and moves to gilded Fontainebleau Palace, where she soon catches the Sun King's eye. But Frances is no ordinary court beauty—she has Stuart secrets to keep and her family to protect. King Louis XIV turns vengeful when she rejects his offer to become his Official Mistress. He banishes her to England with orders to seduce King Charles II and secure an alliance.
Armed in pearls and silks, Frances maneuvers the political turbulence of Whitehall Palace, but still can't afford to stir a scandal. Her tactic to inspire King Charles to greatness captivates him. He believes her love can make him a better man, and even chooses Frances to pose as Britannia for England's coins. Frances survives the Great Fire, the Great Plague, and the debauchery of the Restoration Court, yet loses her heart to the very king she must control. The discovery of a dangerous plot will force her to choose between love for herself and war for her beloved country.

Review
“Jefferson's intoxicating first novel superbly draws readers into the mischief and maneuverings, loyalties and treacheries, and lust and hostility of powerful 17th century kings and scheming court sycophants. Frances Stuart, a young distant cousin of King Charles II, and other historical figures reveal the essence of Restoration England in this captivating story....Jefferson aptly recounts the passionate affair and resulting potential 'political calamity,' the queen's infertility, the mistresses and illegitimate children, and the turmoil of London's devastating plague, the great fire and the Dutch war....this is an exciting, solid debut.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“Jefferson fictionalizes the life of a little-known--yet exceedingly familiar--historical figure in her authentically detailed debut...Faced with some difficult choices regarding love, loyalty, family, and duty, Frances staunchly follows her own path into the annals of history as she poses as a model for the visage of Britannia, destined to grace coins, medals, and statues for centuries. This small leap from the Tudors is a must-read for Alison Weir-Philippa Gregory fans.” ―Booklist
“Jefferson's first novel focuses on a woman and time that recent historical novelists have overlooked: Restoration England.” ―Library Journal
“Scheming, unscrupulous Lady Castlemaine, Charles' wilful sister, the easy-going king himself and even Frances' rather sweet husband who makes just brief appearances are well-drawn characters who add to the novel's charm. Jefferson is an accomplished writer, and Girl on the Golden Coin is an excellent debut that sets a high standard for any future works.” ―Roanoke Times
“Written with spirit and insight, the novel reveals both the glamour and the dirt of court life while peering into the soul of a woman who is one of the unsung heroines of English history.” ―Historical Novels Review
“Marci Jefferson's debut novel Girl on the Golden Coin paints a rich and vivid portrayal …A juicy vacation read when you want to become embroiled in an entirely different world…Once the first page turns, you won't want to come up for air.” ―Daily Press
“A novel as rich and golden as the coin she graced. Frances Stuart's face was truly her fortune and left its mark on history, a rare achievement.” ―Margaret George, New York Times bestselling author of Elizabeth I: The Novel
“A delicious story of court intrigues, affairs and vibrant personalities, Jefferson's novel is sure to please fans of historical fiction of all kinds.” ―Madeline Hunter, New York Times bestselling author of The Counterfeit Mistress
“In her wonderfully evocative debut, Marci Jefferson recreates the fascinating story of Frances Stuart, whose influence over England's Charles II became the talk of a nation. As vibrant and delightful as the woman it's based on, Girl on the Golden Coin is a jewel of a novel!” ―Michelle Moran, national bestselling author of The Second Empress
“Beauty is not always a blessing, as young Frances Stuart finds out when her lovely face pits her between the desires and politics of rival kings Louis XIV and Charles II. Frances makes an appealing heroine, by turns wary and passionate, sophisticated and innocent, as she matures from destitute young pawn to the majestic duchess whose figure would grace Britain's coins for centuries. Her struggles to support her loved ones, uncover her family secrets, and somehow find a life of her own amid the snake-pit courts of the Sun King and the Merry Monarch make for lively, entertaining reading in this lush Restoration novel by debut author Marci Jefferson.” ―Kate Quinn, national bestselling author of Mistress of Rome
“Girl on the Golden Coin is a sexy, exciting tale featuring vivid characters, rich historical detail, scintillating court intrigue, and a complexly rendered heroine in Frances Stuart, Maid of Honor to the Queen of England, who will capture the reader's heart--as will the man she loves, that rascal King Charles II.” ―Sherry Jones, internationally bestselling author of Four Sisters, All Queens
“Fans of historical fiction featuring interesting but previously overlooked women have reason to celebrate the release of Girl on the Golden Coin. With a deft hand, Marci Jefferson brings to vivid life Frances Stuart, Duchess of Richmond--a woman with the charms of Josephine Bonaparte and style of Marie Antoinette, who captured the hearts of Kings on both sides of the channel. Frances is a thoroughly likeable heroine who puts duty to her King, her country, and her family before the desires of her own heart. But Frances, as written by Jefferson, is no paper-saint. She is a flesh and blood woman who modern readers will recognize and identify with. The balance of the novel's characters are equally well drawn--full of nuance and complexity. Do not miss this marvelous debut!” ―Sophie Perinot, author of The Sister Queens
“Marci Jefferson spins a spirited yarn in Girl on the Golden Coin, a Restoration novel packed with beribboned courtiers and ebullient dialogue and the utterly likable and cunning Frances Stuart, distant cousin of King Charles II. A realistic view of court intrigue, this story of merry-making and mischief and the ultimate test of honor will delight readers and keep them turning pages long into the night.” ―Heather Webb, author of Becoming Josephine
“Girl on the Golden Coin is a fantastic novel. I couldn't put it down. The plot is fast-paced and compelling, with intriguing characters, lush settings and captivating narrative voice. Jefferson's debut paints an intriguing portrait of Frances Stuart, a novel worthy of the determined, golden spirit of the woman whose face became the model for Brittania herself.” ―Susan Spann, author of Claws of the Cat

- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2014I can not fully express how much I enjoyed this captivating page turner. It is full of characters I daydream about and brings them to life in a journey that is sure to become an award winning movie. I developed an meaningful relationship with each person as this map of history unfolded.
I certainly appreciated the twist in the end. It touched my heart and created an empathy that allowed me to put myself fully in that time period. I caused me to relive it again and again in my mind and changed the book from a great 'story' into a poetic piece of history never before told.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2014I'm a fan of the Restoration era in English lore, so I'm always glad to find a new entry in historical fiction on the subject. Frances Stuart gets the "ditzy dame" treatment so often in historical accounts that she can be marginalized as a meaningful presence in Charles II's court full of fascinating characters, so it was great to read an account of her life that gave her a bit more credit for having brains behind that pretty face.
While I didn't find all of the plot elements completely plausible, I do respect the time and effort the author put into researching materials which supported those choices. Overall. I found this book was well written and entertaining, and gives some fascinating details about life as a member of the Merry Monarch's inner circle. If you liked books by Christy English or Anne O' Brien or Diane Haeger, you'll enjoy this one by Marci Jefferson.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2014I've been eagerly awaiting the release of Girl on the Golden Coin since last year, and this book definitely delivered all the drama, romance, and intrigue I was expecting! Frances Stuart is portrayed as honorable and virtuous, yet she's able to manipulate not only King Louis XIV and Charles II along with a whole host of courtiers. I've read several other Restoration-era novels, but this was the first one that really brought the full cast of historical characters fully to life: not only the kings and Frances, but also Barbara Palmer, Queen Catherine, and even the future King James. A remarkable and well-written novel!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2014Girl on the Golden Coin: A Novel of Frances Stuart is an interesting collaboration of historical fact and speculative fiction that centers around the 17th-century English court and follows the narration of Frances Teresa Stuart as she recalls her past conduct, pivotal role concerning the hearts of kings and her ultimate quest for freedom. When a poisoned whisper can herald the downfall of one's honor, one must step lightly and la Belle Stuart takes the reader into the bowels of the scandalous court of King Charles II and steps with silk shoes around the muck that threatens to sully. The reader is confronted time and again with the noble choices or forced obligations that are thrust at Frances as she straddles French, English and finally familial loyalty and is pressed by those only desiring power or a king's favor. Will she find the freedom and unconditional love she so desperately desires and leave a legacy of her quiet virtue and golden strength? The answers to these questions and lasting impression are inevitably up to the reader, so may I introduce Girl on the Golden Coin: A Novel of Frances Stuart.
In the end, this novel unfortunately had too much and not enough for me. Girl on the Golden Coin sparkled in the beginning and created a lustrous pearl strand of delight and enjoyment as the novel continued to capture the sheer opulence of the 17th-century English court while balancing important historical details, characterization and exceptional debut writing. That strand of happiness snapped though when chapter after chapter was pitted when drama and history was interrupted by modish scenes and the pace of the story slowed to a dull finish that sadly left this reader shaking her head in disappointment. That all aside, readers who loved Dark Angels may find another historical romance favorite with Girl on the Golden Coin or those readers who just love a story about the famous or the notorious of history and enjoy a naughty twist to their fiction are sure to be enchanted by this debut.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2014This story covers the period of time between the reing of James I, who succeded Elizabeth I and spans to the days and events which lead England to the Glorious Revolution. Amazing that the son of Mary Stuart, Queen of the Scots, was the heir of the Crown of England and I very much wanted to know more about this span of time and the history of that century.
I love to read historical novels and I have read some of Phillipa Gregory books. Marci Jefferson is a follower of Gregorie's tradition and does it very well, although she could dare more and give the characters, such as Frances, the cunniness the Court and the times required for survival in such dangerous and hsotile enviroment.
Advancing in time, we had another Stuart, Lady Diana Spencer, to be sacrificed by the English Royalty for being neivy and for beliving she could make it her way.
The English Monarchy is the most solid institution of our times, and has been so for hundreds of years, facing Popes, Revolutions, and other monarchs,
The book is worth reading. I would like to read another about the overall enviroment during the time span between the Glorious Revolution and the French REvolution.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2024I’m a huge fan of Tudor period novels, and Marci Jefferson is the first author to get me to explore a different British time period. She wrote a beautiful story about a very interesting, little known woman. I will say, keeping up with everyone’s titles and relationships with each other was a little tedious but I’m excited to see what else this author writes!

Nice novel describing the XVII century ways at court of Charles II particularly. Well written and a pleasant lecture including many historic facts and some logical guesses.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun historical romance, but dull, unsympathetic main character and relatively little substance
I love history, and the Stuart period is a particular favourite of mine - and one that often tends to get neglected by novelists and film makers in favour of the Tudor and Georgian periods that bracket it. Charles II is probably my favourite English King, and I also have a soft spot for Louis XIV and his French court, so this book was really quite an easy sell for me. I was expecting sex, glamour and intrigue - and it's fair to say it delivered on some of those points and less so on others.
This wasn't just a general book about the Restoration court. It focussed firmly on the adventures of one woman, Frances Stuart, and as a result, it was always going to stand or fall by a combination of how interesting that character was in real life and how sympathetic and intriguing the author managed to make her. Despite the fact that I used to study history reasonably seriously, I've always been far more interested in individuals than in grand, sweeping narratives or battles, so I was all ready for the author to make me develop a massive girl crush of Ms Stuart. Sadly, she mostly didn't deliver. I went into this book knowing a handful of things about the character - that she'd been a mistress of Charles II, that she was very beautiful and set the fashions of the times, and that she eventually married a character I'd better not name for fear of spoilers, but who I was very interested in hearing more about. By the end of the book, I didn't feel I'd learnt that much more about her, or forged any kind of real connection.
It's probably a bit unfair to compare what's basically a classier than average historical romance with a modern masterpiece, but I couldn't help contrasting this with my experience of reading Wolf Hall, which also looked at historical events through the eyes of a character who is usually in the background of traditional retellings of the period. By the end of that, I felt that I knew Thomas Cromwell better than my best friends and that I would cheer him on whatever he did. Here, I struggled to get any understanding of Stuart's motivations or real personality. Did she want to sleep with the French King or was his pursuit stressful and relentless? How about the English King? Who did she want to marry? Her approach to life seemed to vacillate wildly from one moment to the next, and I never knew quite what outcome I should be routing for. To makes matters worse, it was never quite clear what King Charles saw in her apart from her extreme beauty - which is probably quite historically accurate, but makes for a dull read. Throughout, I felt far more interested (and on the verge of cheering for) Frances' main rival, Lady Castelmaine, who was also beautiful, but who combined it with wit, intelligence and some entertaining scheming.
On the plus side, rooms, clothes and events were lavishly described, and I got a real sense of what life was like for the wealthy and titled in this period. Some of the romance was very sweet and although it was never particularly graphic, some of the sex was really quite hot - indeed it was more interesting because of both the characters' and the author's restraint.
The blurb, some of the internet buzz, and the gorgeously classy cover gave me the impression that this was going to be about more than just romance, and that as well as who was sleeping with who, the book would delve into the politics of the time. Despite a few token references to religious conflict and wars, it fundamentally failed to deliver on this point. I haven't marked it down for this, as it's no crime for a book not to be quite the genre I was expecting, but if you're considering whether or not to read this, it's worth bearing in mind that it is basically just a standard historical romance. Similarly, I disagreed with some of the author's interpretations of historical events (if you ask me, Louis XIV loved Charles I's sister, and Frances Stuart loved her eventual husband to the extent she'd defy the king's wrath to be with him) but again, that hasn't affected my score - the author had clearly done some research, and part of the fun of history is that people can reach very different conclusions from the same source material.
So, to read or not to read? If you enjoy historical romance and either like the period or are looking for something slightly different, you may well enjoy this. It's glamorous, sexy and fun, and a fairly easy read. Just don't expect much from the main character, or much historical context.
