If you like, you can just jump ahead to all the great and easy recipes OR, if you really want to get into the meatless of the subject, you can get many questions answered about why one should try to eat less meat and replace with healthier and more ecological foods. She confirms that vegetarian protein is better than meat protein and explains, thoroughly, why. This is the most complete vegan source of information I have come across and she doesn't make anyone feel bad, who is a carnivore, but just wants to know more about eating vegan. We may all be human, but we have different blood types and come from different areas of humanity, which can make a big difference as to what you can tolerate from the world of food. Some people were meant to be vegans. Some were meant to be carnivores and many fall somewhere in between. She covers many more subjects than I have here and does it with much more depth and unlike my review, her book was extremely interesting. Mayim's book will help you find the best way of selecting what is right for you.

So, I know what some of you are going to say? VEGAN, REALLY?!! Yes vegan! No, I’m not changing my diet, honestly the hubby would FREAK, but I do like to live healthy and I’m a fan of Mayim’s so I thought, why not vegan?

I have to say, this is an amazing cookbook. She puts in here that she realizes that if you’re not already vegan that it is a HUGE step and it is hard to change, so she adds in some things that will help you practice to become vegan IF you want to.

What I’m doing is just adding a bit more of the vegan lifestyle into my life via the kitchen! I started reading this and there is a bit about why to go or not to go vegan, what you can get from this diet, how the naysayers are wrong, etc… she backs what she says with evidence and with lovely, lovely recipes!

Although I enjoyed the sciency part really I skimmed most of it because I do know about the vegan lifestyle but I’m glad that she put that part in there. I’m just not one that needed all that. My favorite part? By far the recipe section! There is a bit in here for everyone! I just got into making smoothies and she has tons of recipes for smoothies, recipes for soup, guacamole, basically recipes for nearly everything!

And the cost of the meals isn’t outrageous either. Most of these recipes are made with ingredients that you may get for a salad, and no it’s not just rabbit food (you naysayers! I’m looking at you) it’s about being healthy especially when so many are over weight.

So, in short… you can easily take this and add in regular or skim milk if you want to, add in regular cheese for the soy cheese ingredients, the recipes are easy to play with, OR you can be daring and do what I plan to do and go vegan for one or two days a week. I think it’ll be worth it!

I don't normally take the time to write reviews unless I really believe a product deserves one. Well, this book deserves a review. I only just got it, so I haven't had the time to cook anything in this book, but looking through the entire thing was enough to inform me. Many of the recipes require only a few ingredients, and most are budget friendly, not requiring a special trip to a specialty store (one desert only calls for 3 ingredients). A lot of the recipes are also great for anyone who is either just starting out as vegan or is a minimalist. She also takes a lot of traditional recipes and tweaks them to make them vegan friendly. If you are someone who is looking for something fancy, this is not necessarily the book for you. She keeps things simple and I like that. There ARE some recipes that can be found online through other sources, but she gives credit where it is due and it is nice to not have to keep my laptop out while I cook. Overall, i am very excited about diving into this book and creating new dishes, as well as having a paper source for the dishes I have already made.

I really like this cookbook. I was a little disappointed in it when it arrived, but I've taken the time to explore it and find that I like it more every day. However, it's not perfect.

This cookbook offers a good mixture of vegan recipes and nutrition basics that will be helpful to those new to the vegan lifestyle, especially parents that want to incorporate this type of eating into family meals. I have sampled several recipes that turned out very well, but not all of the recipes appeal to me. One recipe appears to be missing an ingredient. Accidents happen!

Why go vegan? The authors provide basics on environmental issues and ethics behind vegan choices, without being pushy. I like that and I think it will help non-vegans become more curious without being pushed away. I also appreciate the casual and friendly approach that is conveyed throughout the book. It felt comfortable.

The recipes are good, but not necessarily new or exciting. Many of the recipes are for home-style comfort foods that will appeal to families. These include recipes such as enchilada casserole, chili, French toast, and plenty of yummy desserts. If that's the type of food your family eats, and most probably do, this cookbook will help provide healthier alternatives to traditional recipes.

I love cookbooks with photos, but I'm sorry to say that the photos in this book disappointed me. The style seems outdated and I think it makes the food look bland. If I were flipping through this book in a bookstore, I would probably put it back on the shelf. The internet is filled with avid food bloggers that have mastered perfect food photography. I'm sure that not everyone will agree with me, but I'm a nut for good food photography and I felt this one was lacking. I'm sorry!

That said, the recipes that I tried turned out very well and were delicious. For my personal use, some of the better recipes in this book include smoothies, energy bars, granola, and Vietnamese banh mi. I tried several recipes, and will share my experiences with a few of them.

The first recipe that I tried was the Outrageous Granola. It included oats, nuts, dried fruit, and was flavored with vanilla, cinnamon, brown sugar, and maple syrup. It tasted as good as it sounds! It was easy to prepare and it turned out well. This was my first attempt making granola, and this recipe made it easy. My granddaughter also loved it, especially since she could help make it.

I also tried the Maple Mustard Greens. I'm always looking for a way to make me love kale, so I was anxious to try this. The dish also includes Swiss chard, which I love, and collard greens, which I have never tried. The recipe includes a full half cup of mustard, but it only serves 4 people. That's two full measuring tablespoons of mustard in one serving, which I admit worried me. I combined the mustard, maple syrup, and other seasonings and decided to lightly drizzle part of it over the cooked greens. I'm glad I did because a little really went a long way. It was really very delicious! The bonus was that I still had mustard sauce left over to use another night, which I gladly did.

The Chocolate, Fruit, and Nut Clusters were absolutely delicious and disappeared quickly. They are too dangerous to make again!

Page 170 includes a recipe for Olive Walnut Bread. The title sounds delicious, however the recipe left out the walnuts in the ingredient list and the directions. Plain olive bread sounded okay, but probably wouldn't be nearly as much fun for the taste buds.

I am enjoying exploring the recipes and I do like this cookbook better now than I did when it arrived, so I would recommend giving it a chance. There are honestly not a lot of recipes in this cookbook that I will try because my personal preferences are different, but the ones that I am enjoying are definitely keepers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book With Interesting Recipes (Though I May Be Somewhat Biased!)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 31, 2014
I have to admit that I'm a massive fan of Mayim's acting work (especially in Big Bang Theory) so I'm probably a bit biased, but I do like this book. The section about healthy eating is not really something I appreciate (I already bought a vegan cookbook, I don't need to be told why vegan food is good for me and the planet!) but at least it's not patronising and I found bits of it quite interesting (though bits of it were rather over-dramatic, to my mind).

The recipes themselves are obviously the major focus of a cookbook, and this book doesn't disappoint! The recipes are easy to follow, feature simple, easy to find ingredients and in some cases are quite unusual. I look forward to trying the French Toast recipe as I'm a big fan of the non-vegan version. It's a shame that there are comparatively few pictures, but the pictures that are included are well taken, well labelled, fairly large and glossy, so I'm not going to complain too much!

I think that I'll get a lot of use out of this book, and I'm pleased that I purchased it.

I was very happy with the way of learning the right way to incorporate fruit and vegetables into every meal and the way they want to educate people and there children about food and how easy it is to slowly help children learn what the reality of processed food has on them. Great recipes and a wake up call of how bad my diet has become after reading this you want to get healthier.
