Editorial Reviews

Review

"Neville takes a clever premise, likable protagonists, and a broken relationship that needs mending, adds a few old secrets, plenty of political machinations, and a touch of jealousy and spins it into a lively tale of mystery and romance that adds another chapter to her popular quartet." ---Library Journal

I grew up in southwest England. During my misspent youth I devoured the works of Georgette Heyer, Jean Plaidy and any other historical novels I could lay hands on. I now live in Vermont where I enjoy skiing and writing romances set in Regency England where it hardly ever snows.

If you love fluent, elegant writing, effortlessly accurate history and emotionally complicated premises, try this book. I just bought it on a whim and holy moley, I dropped everything to read it. Yes, it's good. And I'm happy to have procrastinated with it. (And even happier to discover this author. She's written quite a few. Yay.)

A textile manufacturer's heiress is married to a nobleman-diplomat who has accepted a devil's bargain to regain his mother's estate, a property he lost to an erstwhile friend in a youthful game of chance. The Earl of Windermere holds his nose to marry the Birmingham bumpkin but takes off soon after consummating the marriage and she is left to fend for herself. This she does by wintering in London and making a few friends, one of whom is her husband's frenemy, now Duke of Denford. Old emnities and class divisions are just some of the obstacles the two face, not to mention a year's worth of preconceived notions, disappointments and mistrust.

You might enjoy this if you've enjoyed Mary Balogh or Grace Burrowes. The perspectives of H/h are beautifully delineated, and their initial gulf heartbreakingly wide. Midway through I couldn't wait to know what happened next and how in God's name he'd redeem himself with her. (As others point out, he's not the take responsibility and suck it up fantasy hero populating most romances, but an imperfect man whose colossal mistake in youth sets his course for life and leaves him with a few idee fixe about who shared the blame for it.)

Having finished it, I will say it was enjoyable as the two negotiated common ground and their evolving passion. The last act of the story involved a half-hearted, half-baked crime, which came out of nowhere and resolved without much to-do; but all in all, I had a good time here. No wish to re-read this, so ultimately not 5 stars for me.

I must confess it took me quite awhile to open up to our main guy, Damian, due to his outlook on life and the way he blamed everyone for his problems. When he reached his majority, he inherited his beloved mother's homeplace, "Beaulieu," but gambled it away on a night of excess debauchery while out with bosom buddies, Julian and Robert. When he comes to his senses the next morning, he is chastened and man enough to face his father, the current Earl of Windermere with the hard cold facts of his irresponsibility. In fact, his father was what I would consider gracious - he didn't excuse him but instead, assisted Damian in obtaining a position with the Foreign Office, believing in time that Damian might be able to purchase the property back.

For his part, Damian blamed Julian and Robert for his own foolishness and their longtime friendship ended. For the next six years, Damian worked and traveled on behalf of the Foreign Office and when he eventually had the funds to purchase "Beaulieu" back, it was denied him by the current owner - a wealthy businessman, Joseph Chorley - who wanted to purchase a title for his family. Damian could have Beaulieu but the price would be marriage to Chorley's niece, Cynthia. Thus, Damian married the young woman although he was about as close to disgusted as one might get with the entire situation.

Of course, Cynthia was the one to suffer. She wasn't raised to be a lady - her hair, her clothes, her French were not up to snuff. Damian gave the marriage two weeks before he decided he could not endure it any longer - bless his teeny, tiny heart. During the two week period, he demanded he and Cynthia speak French so that she could improve her efforts for after all, she was now a diplomat's wife. He took her to bed every night but didn't see that she received pleasure and then he departed to far off lands - Persia, in fact - to get away from his awful life - bless his teeny, tiny heart.

One year passes and Damian is called back home by the Foreign Office. Before he checks in with his wife, he dines with his head at the foreign office who tasks him with a new job, and then sends Damian off to escort his wife, Belinda - and Damian's previous paramour - to the opera. While at the opera, Damian sees his old friend, Julian, now Duke of Denford, hanging out with a lovely woman that he eventually recognizes as his wife, Cynthia. This does not set well with Damian who has had some time to realize he never gave his marriage a chance and wants to try and make a go of it. But, the pigeons have come home to roost and Cynthia is not quite the little drab he left behind. Plus, Cynthia has a specific wound to her soul for which she cannot forgive Damian. Whether or not Damian is guilty of this misdeed is one that I won't reveal in this review. But it has preyed upon Cynthia's soul and contributed to the person she has become.

What to say about this story? I must admit to being really dialed into the storyline - the writing is really great. There were some things I didn't like: Although Cynthia had worked really hard on her personal appearance, was a very generous soul and was very willing to forgive Damian, her character might have pleased me more had she hung him out to dry a little longer. Yes, I thought Damian should have had to work a little harder to get back into Cynthia's good graces. He refuses to believe she and Julian have not engaged in an affair. He had plans to give some erotic pictures to his former paramour, Belinda, and accepted a dinner invitation to her home and insisted Cynthia attend with him, although Cynthia was fully aware of his and Belinda's former relationship. I didn't like that.

I did like it that very early on, we learned that Damian had remained celibate the year he was gone from Cynthia. I also liked it that even though he fully believed Cynthia and Julian had been involved in an affair, he was willing to continue trying to make his marriage work and refused to give Cynthia up. I liked it that he engaged in fisticuffs with Julian over her and finally, he began to win me over with his steadfast approach to win Cynthia.

I decided to give the book 5 stars but it was more like 4 1/2.

Miranda Neville is a good writer and I've greatly enjoyed some of her earlier books so this book gets 3 stars vs 2. The fact is, it just wasn't that good. The story was interesting (marriage of convenience trope) and the dynamics between H and his former friend Julian were really good. What didn't work was the "romance" between H/h. I wasn't convinced by H's love for h -- when he first started thinking that he loved her I kept thinking "why? what exactly changed your mind?" -- and I also think the heroine gave in a bit too easily. The first half of the book was excellent and tightly written and I was looking forward to seeing how this whiny, self-righteous prig of a hero was going to redeem himself, but he never really did. At the half way point, the story lost steam and became sort of blah. And at the end there was a strange chapter with action that didn't seem to fit with the story and was resolved in a few pages (trying not to include spoilers here.) I wanted to love this book but I can't even really recommend it.

I pre-ordered this book and have just finished reading it and wanted to counter-balance some of the negative reviews. I really liked Damien, he's not an alpha male or dark and brooding, in fact, I thought him v self-aware and really quite human. The book didn't really dwell on the growth of their feelings for each other but told a story of 2 people getting to know each other and the people they interacted with along the way, not offensive in any way, although I do wish there had been more depth to it all.

Boring. Absolutely no chemistry between any of the characters. I got to 90% and then just thought that I couldn't waste any more if my time reading the ending which was identical to SO many books I've read, but executed so poorly. Don't waste your time or hard earned cash. Buy Julia Quinn or Julieann Long or Sherry Thomas instead.
