In My Skin: My Life On and Off the Basketball Court Kindle Edition
The WMBA All-Star shares the inspiring story of her singular life as an athlete and activist in this “searing and ultimately liberating memoir” (New York Times Book Review).
Brittney Griner is a once-in-a-generation basketball player. A two-time Olympic gold medalist and a six-time WNBA All-Star, she has been hailed by Sports Illustrated as “the sport’s most transformative figure.” But she is equally famous for speaking out on a range of social issues, as well as for surviving a wrongful detention in Russia that became a geopolitical flashpoint. Now Griner shares her coming-of-age story, revealing how she found her strength to overcome bullies and embrace her authentic self.
At 6’8”, with an 88-inch wingspan and a size 17 shoe (men’s), the Phoenix Mercury star has heard every vicious insult in the book, enduring years of taunting that began in middle school and continues to this day. Through the highs and lows, Griner has learned to remain true to herself, rising above the haters trying to take her down.
In her heartfelt memoir, she reflects on painful episodes in her life and describes how she came to celebrate what makes her unique—inspiring lessons she now shares. Filled with all the humor and personality Griner has become known for, In My Skin is more than a glimpse into one of the most original personalities in sports; it’s also a powerful call to readers to be true to themselves, to love who they are on the inside and out.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2014I bought this book on Amazon to read on my Kindle and read it in one day! It is a total page turner because it walks us through Brittney's childhood, middle school years, her relationship with her parents and her College coach, Kim Mulkey, as well has her debut in the WNBA. If you are even a remote fan of Brittney's or a fan of basketball, or of triumph over adversity, or a parent of an LBGT child, please read this book. As a parent of two young boys, ages 9 and 11, I want them to love all people, gay and straight, white, black, ESPECIALLY when they don't look, act, speak or dress the way society thinks they should. This book made me laugh out loud, cry at times and has left a lasting impression on me as it is a powerful reminder that what unites us all is our humanity. Period. As a parent, it also forced me to look in the mirror as I can see Brittney's dad in myself in the way that I can be so controlling and overprotective and it has made me rethink the way I address certain issues with my kids. This is a tell all book in that Brittney speaks straight from the heart and bares it all, the good, the bad, and the ugly. It is a great piece of work and a reminder of the old adage, "To Thine Own Self Be True."
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2023I'm late to the phenomenon that is Brittney Griner. The situation in Russia introduced me to her because I don't watch sports in general. It made me super sympathetic to her situation. I wanted to know more about her and reading her story definitely helped. It was a great read about overcoming odds and being yourself. I'm just glad she's home. I can't wait to see her play live against my home team in NYC. I'll be rooting for Brittney and the Mercury.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2019The book itself was good. A great read for teens. Reason I say this we bounce back and forth quite a bit one min shes 18 then back to 16 back to 18. I wouldve prefer to be in chronological order. As far as her relationship w Relle. Which btw they are the cutest. We get they were together in college even when she got drafted but when did they split for BG to marry GJ? Like major things were left out. I wont give too much away about the book. All in all a great read for teens!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2015Very interesting, funny, open and heartwarming book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was a really easy read that was hard to put down. I just recently learned of Brittney Griner because of her engagement/marriage and break-up and I am fascinated by her. We all make mistakes in life and she is open about them which I really admire. Aside from her basketball prowess, I love her journey of self acceptance and being true to herself in what can be a harsh world. I think no matter who you are or where you are in life, you can learn from her story and understand that being authentic is not only a gift to yourself, but to the world. Bravo Brittney, I wish you the very best in life, both on and off the court!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2014Interesting story. Wasn't aware of issues within the family. Some may question how she didn't know what the social expectations would be at Baylor but having made a life changing decision at age 18 myself, I truly believe she didn't fully know the ramifications.
Overall, a good, quick read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2022This book was expertly written. It is so easy to visualize what Brittney is describing. Some stories gave me a chuckle and a smile. Many of her experiences are relatable - to so many. Others, caused disappointment and disgust that people would chose to not only cause another human being pain, but repeatedly, and sometimes on a daily basis. We need to lift each other up in this world and cherish, and support our differences. I’m hoping that someday she’ll feel comfortable sharing her latest experiences with us to increase awareness of the atrocities in this world. That would hopefully cause Americans to support each other and realize that we all are “American” irregardless of how we dress, how we worship, what we believe or whom we love. Welcome home Brit.

I love the honesty of Brittney in sharing her story with the world. In those difficult times how she never gave up, just pushed on through. Accepting responsibility for her errors and being mature enough to apologize when she had to.
